I was thinking about why I like Devil May Cry (and my own writing on Giles’ Detective Agency) and why I don’t think that the story is “terrible” like a lot of people. Unlike my other lit analysis posts this one is mostly about DMC, mostly because I started writing and apparently had a lot to say and this is long enough as it is. This does tie in slightly to why I’m also more positive on DMC 2 (at least story wise, and you can’t argue that the outfit and music weren’t stylish) and the anime (which got me into the story). Again, I haven’t experienced DMC 5 yet; it’s one of the ones I want to actually experience myself, rather than watching someone else play, and admittedly half of my issue is that I want to wait until I’m living somewhere one of my roommates isn’t going to break a newly bought PS4 in a fit of rage or because they’re mad I haven’t cleaned the microwave or whatever. I look forward to seeing how it fits in with this mini-essay. It’s also why I don’t like the Ninja Theory one and why writing crossovers with lgbtq+ themes feels very natural to me. We will also be getting into story spoilers here, so warning for that.

Series Summary: I can actually explain some of the background stuff here. I'm not sure I'm going to go into full detail for the background and why it's such a messy crossover in the fic itself, so between this and the "side series" in the Alexander Gibbsverse line, that'll have to do, unless I get it in my head to actually write it separately.
        NCIS is mostly background, and the only real thing you have to know from that is that Gibbs is Xander’s biological father. It’s mostly background although I get the feeling Gibbs is lurking in the background waiting for the best chance to totally spook Leon with a shovel speech, so that might be more direct. Xander was unable to get the Halloween costume he wanted on that fateful Halloween, and he and Willow had been on a Castlevania kick, so as a second choice he tried to put together a Castlevania protag costume.
        Unfortunately (possibly unbeknownst to even Ethan himself), one of those fake “prop sword” weapons he’d picked up wasn’t a prop at all. It was one of the Devil Arms Dante had sold off to pay the bills, specifically Alastor. So that didn’t go as anyone expected. Like with the female!Xander YAHF fic I did a few years ago, he’d gotten impaled on Alastor pre-transformation back and really didn’t want to die, so subconsciously drew on the power of a Sparda to survive. Unlike the side series, though, he retained the white hair and blue eyes.
        He’s gotten stabbed more times than anyone is comfortable with (even him, though he likes to wave it off because hey, come on, they’re already freaking out enough to cover him too) and was even “killed” by Glory, but healed back from everything else. Everything except Caleb. The eye hasn’t healed back since then, and Willow’s spells haven’t kicked his regeneration into gear, either. This has everyone even more worried than usual, but they’ve all kind of gone into Sunnydale Syndrome about it, i.e. the This is Fine dog meme. Nothing since has left the same mark, so they’ve pretty much all chalked it up to Empowered by the First and gone about life as per usual.
        So, it’s mostly just a BtVS/RE crossover. There are specific chapters that might go directly into the DMC and NCIS portions, but mostly those are background dressing that informs events but are not specifically required knowledge, I don’t think.
        I’m adding time gap and TBA in places where I have some of the chapter but not all of it written. That’ll be updated when I finish them.

*I have some notes for this, but we’ll see when I get back to it; it’s a little harder without access to NCIS. (I mean, I *might* be able to get it through my public library. We’ll see. But also I am so far prewritten it’s kind of scaring me.) As I noted, the Xander in that version still has a brown eye and hair and there are probably a few other things that don’t exist 1:1 between the two, but a lot of it, like his Slayer/Witch Team, are basically the same, so it might be useful to read this. The Slayers’ Rules drabbles might also be relevant, but I’m just including the casefic in this section. The last two are more floaty when it comes to whether or not they’re actually part of this crossover, but The Requisite Father Embarrassment is hilarious as a lead-up to this relationship fic thing, so it’s definitely being included.
