“I, um. I guess I’m sleeping on the couch tonight?”
“Are you kidding? I’m not letting you out of my sight. I’m clinging to you like a limpet.”
“...Fair enough.”
( in the aftermath )
It may be a little absurd but I really am dating everything by Leon’s First Apartment and Leon’s Second Apartment, aren’t I? It really, really bugged me when events insisted on happening with Leon’s First Apartment because I loved that place and would like to live there, but that’s actually really helpful.
(buffy and gibbs both posted someone as one of Leon’s neighbors)
“I mean, I get it, wanting to protect you, but you’re a grown man who can handle himself and—stop waggling your eyebrows at me, I’m trying to be mad on your behalf that apparently everyone I know can’t treat you like a mature adult.”
“They might have a reason to think I’m immature,” Leon points out reasonably, before adding, “And as annoying as it is, it’s probably going to come in useful now.”
“Argh.”
( in the words of admiral ackbar, it's a trap )
Most of Ashley’s existence is pain, right now. It’s hard to tell how long it’s been, but it feels like one or both grabbed her, like she’s on Leon’s couch right now.
“Babe. What’s that.” She can’t even be mad at the cutesy nickname. It feels like she’ll never be warm again.
The other—Redgrave, that’s it—sounds confused. “Oh, uh. Huh. That’s a thing that happened. You can bandage it in a bit. If I’m right, this is big, Leon. I don’t think it can wait.”
Ashley’s head is killing her. She whimpers.
“But she broke your hand.” She did what? It’s not like he has to shout.
“It’ll heal.” It’s too flippant, and she half wants to scold him, but she’s out again.
( Ashley's in the mood to be annoyed by everything )
( forgotten outing )
Hold My Heart is, obviously, a queer series, given that there’s a gay relationship (Leon/Xander), but it’s focusing a lot more on trauma and healing, and how relationships can help heal but it’s not an instant fix. There are some found family themes, particularly in the Ghosts in Ultraviolet phase. I had a ton of fun with the mirroring at the beginning, and there’s a little detail I’m not sure observers would notice on Ao3 because a) it just gives overall fix word count, not that of individual chapters, b) it tends to count word count a little differently than my word processing program, which I’m guessing has to do with dashes and ellipses, but I’m not sure, so it might not have even kept it, and c) it’s really, really unlikely anyone would notice in Feeling of Fading Away (Waiting to Be Found and The Pain of Survival), because that would involve using a different program to count words for the beginning and end, but one that I had a lot of fun with—I wanted to subconsciously indicate the equality there, so Leon’s and Xander’s parts are equal numbers of words in that and the two chapters of Thought and Truth (Floating in Limbo and The Anger Cools). There was some unintentional mirroring in a couple places that I didn’t even notice and absolutely love—both of them attempted food bribery with their respective coworker-friends that appeared in the intentionally mirrored Feeling of Fading Away parts.
Half of it is exploring writing a mature relationship where arguments can happen and it’s not the end of the world (or arguments can happen, it’s the end of the world, but they’re both still committed to the relationship, because, y’know, apocalypse), and half of it is them working through their own trauma. They are both geeks and dorks, and their first instinct is to cope with humor. And there’s definitely a bit of ‘not feeling normal because of how society defines it’. Leon’s better at hiding it, but they both have a decent amount of guilt at burdening others with their pain. I didn’t intend on Xander getting more flustered, but he really, really doesn’t know what to do with love and doesn’t understand what to do with it at first (and then keeps getting frustrated because his own trauma keeps getting in the way and thinking that’s a problem with him; they get to the same page in The Conversation, although I wouldn’t call it ‘fixed’). But also because Leon is doing a better job at hiding it, Xander doesn’t think he’s doing as much for the goofball agent as he is. I’m working on that, though Comfort vs Oblivion was a start. Their trauma (personal, professional, in their love life, losing people, etc), is not the same, but it’s affected them both equally in different ways, and it’s interesting exploring that and letting them heal and learn to trust again, that this isn’t going to be the same, that the world isn’t going to take this away from them too.
And then I kind of break that in some of the Ghosts in Ultraviolet chapters. Sorry about that. I promise to put back everything in better condition than I took it.
(One final side note: I also hadn’t intended on there to be some chronic pain themes with Xander, even with the eye, because, well, it’s the legacy of Sparda, but somehow some mini-metacrisis (Doctor Who) stuff snuck in there during move in circles, so. Yeah, apparently the permanent YAHF costume thing is that Xander has a bit of autoimmune where his devil and human sides don’t always like to play ball, and so sometimes he just hurts. Mostly in the form of a migraine, but it’s probably not always “just” a migraine, although lbr is that a phrase that can even be applied to migraines?)
Leon can tell when Boren finally comes around, because there’s a sticker with the words ‘Proud Monsterfucker’ sitting on his desk. When the guy comes to the break room for some coffee, he just raises an unimpressed eyebrow.
“Hey, it’s accurate,” his squadmate protests, but claps him on the shoulder. “You don’t have to be ashamed of it.”
He sighs. “Do you seriously have no sense of appropriate time and place?” He wouldn’t even mind, too much, except given what they work with that’s way too easy to misread and Boren knows it.
“Nope,” the guy says cheerfully, even though they both know that’s a lie or at least three people would have been hounding Leon on the way up. “Special ordered that and everything.”
That’s touching, in a very warped way. The agent decides to tuck it into the corner of the frame of the picture of himself and Xander on his desk—that way, it’s easy to put in his desk if there’s an inspection or something. He is absolutely going to go with the fact that Boren assumed that all relationships are sexual pretty quickly, or it’s really going to start bothering him how he even knows.
“You could carry me.”
“Don’t tempt me.”
Xander glances at him, wry and serious and flirty but most of all exhausted. “No, I was being serious. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll stay upright and being in your arms is, well. I like it.”

“Welcome back, Le—” Xander just stops talking halfway through his sentence, because he’s actually taking in Leon’s appearance at this point.
Leon manages a wry smile. “That bad, huh?”
Xander doesn’t respond, just rushes at him and pulls him into a tight embrace, and Leon laughs a little, guilty. He knows how worrying sucks from his end, and he’s been trying not to make Xander do that.
“I swear, I’ve been trying. You know I’ve been trying.” He’s not going into detail on the how or where, and Hunnigan would actually fight for him, so he figures he’s allowed. “One of those big bastards got the drop on me. I swear I’ve got no idea how they manage to be so quiet. The sling should only stick around for a day or two, according to the doc, with my Weapon X-style healing.” At least he’d gotten to shower in between.
That does manage to provoke a snort, but Xander doesn’t move from where he’s clinging on for dear life, and Leon feels his own carefully cheerful mood beginning to crack.
“Much as I enjoy and agree with the idea, babe, at least let me get into some nice cozy pajamas and then I’m all yours.” Cuddling doesn’t fix everything, but at least it might keep the nightmares at bay, just for a little while.
At this Redgrave smiles a little shyly. It’s not much, but it’s something. “Already got them out on your bed.” Nice, having a guy who knows just how he likes it.
He doesn’t realize he accidentally said that out loud until Xander splutters, grinning but beet red, and practically shoves him out of the room.
After not-yet written events in Responding to Intel, Leon has to move into
his second apartment. He doesn't like it as well, but there are some
changes he likes: for example, he doesn't have to rely on his ridiculously
expensive tiny UV light for his plants, he can just put them on the
windowsill, because this second apartment has a balcony. (And no, he got
the safe plant light not one that causes burns, but. Having to buy one
annoyed him so much. He thought about putting them on the windowsill,
because he does have one behind the TV, but it wasn't built for that and he
broke one of the pots trying to get it to stay.)
He doesn't get to be here much, but Leon honestly kind of loves this apartment. It's perfect for his needs, and while the kitchen is a little small it's got enough room he can spoil Xander. The living room is cozy and he honestly kind of likes it that way, but he's not usually entertaining the crowds Xander is.
