The Nix is the male version of the Nixie in German folklore a shapeshifting river horse, known to play enchanted songs on his violin. While some are known to seduce and sometimes drown innocents, they are not always malicious.

Frost Order Encantado, found at level 4, Skills: Zio, Bufu, will learn Marin Karin at a higher level, Investigation Skill: Cool Down. Weak to Agi skills.
The Encantado is a shapeshifting river dolphin found in the Amazon that wears a hat to avoid her blowhole being discovered and therefore humans seeing through her disguise. These playful spirits enjoy human social activities and may, if befriended, use their powers, such as control of the weather, on behalf of humans.

Pyro Order Žiburinis, found at level 7, Skills: Maragi, Pulinpa, Frenzy, will learn War Cry, Investigation Skill: Ignite. Weak to Garu skills.
The Žiburinis is a Lithuanian vengeful forest spirit which often appears as a glowing skeleton, or one with a candle inside its rib cage. Encountering one is bad luck, but one can make it through the encounter by greeting it and being polite.

Fury Order Al Karisi, found at level 10 (technically, beyond Raidou’s level), Skills: Combo, Venomstrike, Vile Storm, Stamina Chakra, Investigation Skill: Use Force.
Al Karisi from Turkic folklore is known as the Red Mother and will torment those with guilty souls, haunting them in their dreams and weakening them. She is especially prone to visit families with a legacy of sin who have escaped their punishment.

I was thinking about why I like Devil May Cry (and my own writing on Giles’ Detective Agency) and why I don’t think that the story is “terrible” like a lot of people. Unlike my other lit analysis posts this one is mostly about DMC, mostly because I started writing and apparently had a lot to say and this is long enough as it is. This does tie in slightly to why I’m also more positive on DMC 2 (at least story wise, and you can’t argue that the outfit and music weren’t stylish) and the anime (which got me into the story). Again, I haven’t experienced DMC 5 yet; it’s one of the ones I want to actually experience myself, rather than watching someone else play, and admittedly half of my issue is that I want to wait until I’m living somewhere one of my roommates isn’t going to break a newly bought PS4 in a fit of rage or because they’re mad I haven’t cleaned the microwave or whatever. I look forward to seeing how it fits in with this mini-essay. It’s also why I don’t like the Ninja Theory one and why writing crossovers with lgbtq+ themes feels very natural to me. We will also be getting into story spoilers here, so warning for that.

After not-yet written events in Responding to Intel, Leon has to move into his second apartment. He doesn't like it as well, but there are some changes he likes: for example, he doesn't have to rely on his ridiculously expensive tiny UV light for his plants, he can just put them on the windowsill, because this second apartment has a balcony. (And no, he got the safe plant light not one that causes burns, but. Having to buy one annoyed him so much. He thought about putting them on the windowsill, because he does have one behind the TV, but it wasn't built for that and he broke one of the pots trying to get it to stay.)

madimpossibledreamer: Dante fighting demons (dante)

He doesn't get to be here much, but Leon honestly kind of loves this apartment. It's perfect for his needs, and while the kitchen is a little small it's got enough room he can spoil Xander. The living room is cozy and he honestly kind of likes it that way, but he's not usually entertaining the crowds Xander is.

I also didn’t expect to get to write as much of The Secret Histories as I am, but. Man does it feel like Assassin’s Creed and The Secret World blend and harmonize so well together. There’s no good or bad, just a world in shades of grey, the various factions, the shadow war, artifacts and weirdness looming on the horizon, and ultimately something bigger that the petty squabbling of humans threatens to make them all miss. (And also I finally brought in a previous idle thought/prompt, because let’s face it, I was overly optimistic; who the hell else would write something quite so ‘out there’?)

If you happen to have experienced Wednesday, please write a detailed report of everything that had occurred. Yesterday we discovered that no one within the library actually remembers anything about the day, so if we can find anyone who does happen to remember the day, we can determine if this is a Stand attack and try to implement countermeasures. Thank you.

Writing’s on the Wall

Stand User: Wesley Wyndam-Price (Deceased)

Power: B

Speed: C

Range: S

Durability: E

Precision: D

Potential: D

Writing’s on the Wall is what could be described as a typical long-range remote Stand capable of following basic instructions (such as ‘target anyone that enters this area’), but targeting a specific individual requires work done beforehand, such as luring one person away from a group and ordering Writing’s on the Wall to target only those who enter that particular area. The Stand is, to some extent, indiscriminate; while those who know its method of targeting can avoid becoming a target, any mistakes can easily end in the death of a potential ally or the User.

Writing’s on the Wall has two different appearances. One is a ‘blood-ink’ in puddle form or ‘moving’ form in which it seeps like a liquid over a surface, although it will move in non-realistic ways, like flowing up a wall or moving faster than a slope would warrant. The second, when a target is selected, is when the Stand sets in on a wall or other surface the victim can see, and it will either have the note ‘Come play my game I’ll test you’ (in which case it will lead the target to a location in the first appearance type) or form two lines describing a manner of death (usually an unpleasant death). In this form it will appear like it is drying or it has dried.

Everybody in Place-The Stand can follow very simple orders, and will then prioritize targets based on the first one to speak. Note that the Stand has trouble ‘perceiving’ a target if the target enters a less well-lit area. It is unclear whose perception matters here. The deceased Speedwagon Foundation Agent Galanis suspected a Tulpa situation, in which case, it might not even be that the Stand can ‘see’ its target. What might matter if this theory is correct is whether the victim targeted can see, or rather, perceive the Stand (and thus, if a blind Agent or one with limited vision would have an advantage in such a circumstance). While this is no longer a necessary consideration for this particular Stand, what we are coming to learn from cataloging all these Stands is that it’s likely this will not be the only Stand whose powers rely on it being perceived. Similarly, if leading its target through a darkened location, it may lose track of the target, allowing them to escape, but in well-lit areas as long as the Stand can be seen in the periphery of vision it retains its control. Using this power (usually triggered by Come play my game I’ll test you, though if a group sees the same message, another exposure is apparently not necessary) it can ‘puppeteer’ lead its targets to a particular location, though this appears to be chosen at random by the Stand and not its User. The distance and time involved can vary, but it does apparently need to lead its victim at least a few steps (the exact minimum length has not been measured). From the images left behind in Transmissions from a Lonely Room (see Stone Temple Pilot), it is clear that not every Agent looked at the writing (specifically, Marchant did not), but possibly, since Vasquez read it out loud, that was enough to ‘perceive’ it and thus grant it the ability to target victims.

What Evil Lurks-Depicted above is What Evil Lurks, when the two-line message of death appears. The circumstances for the death do not have to be present—Writing’s on the Wall was able to manifest demons which disappeared after killing the victim and drown another with no liquid. It’s possible that the victim themselves manifests the manner of death based on the threat and feeling of impending doom/inescapability of the Stand, depending on whether or not the ‘Tulpa’ explanation, above, is the accurate one.

Voodoo People-A victim being targeted by Writing’s on the Wall in either capacity seems incapable of fighting their fate. They are capable of using their own Stand, should they have one, although the only likely method of actually interrupting the power is by attacking the User. Writing’s on the Wall has, as far as anyone can tell, disappeared since the death of its User, so theoretically if a victim being attacked could have managed to kill Wyndam-Price using a Stand before their own demise, they might have survived. (Tragically, it appears that this may have been the case for Agent Dunstan.) Other than preventing himself from being targeted by his own Stand, this also appears to be the reason why Wyndam-Price used his Stand far away from him, when he had the choice—to prevent himself from being possibly neutralized before Writing’s on the Wall could deliver the killing blow. It is, however, possible for another person to intervene—if the victim has the ‘appearance’ or ‘should have’ died, the Stand will move on to its next victim based on the order of who spoke and follows the simple conditions previously set.

Val most wants a rat, but he’ll find the city strays and give them pets and food.

The only person from Real Life Xander has spoken to after the Tear is Mrs. Summers and she was visibly weirded out and hasn’t been back—which sucks, because he definitely liked her as a parental figure he’d pseudo-adopted. He’s heard nothing from his parents, which doesn’t surprise him in the slightest. He’s also heard nothing from the woman he’d been dating, but then, he’s not particularly surprised. She’d already started pulling away. She was jealous about him playing games, and he assured her that it was just with friends, but she was convinced that he’d met a woman and was cheating on her. He tried to explain that he just liked playing it because he knew what he was doing, for once, that in games he felt a sense of accomplishment that he hadn’t in real life. She didn’t believe him, but hadn’t been aware she’d been subtly questioning his competence when it came to his classes.

He loves restaurants, little holes in the wall especially, because he likes getting to know them. He likes walking around. He got the latest music player and goes to concerts and stuff. He’ll also send little messages like post-it-notes to make the people he cares about smile. He hates cooking but will do it if someone’s busy and won’t have time.

Scammers tick him off. Sometimes he’ll hunt them down. They’d taken advantage of Jesse, once or twice, and he couldn’t stand that.

It’s not a complete truth to say that Xander has absolutely no contact with the outside world. There’s a research program. Some of the original devs were fired and replaced, so they suspect one of them was the cause of the code that caused the Tear. He’ll go in every now and then and they’ll scan him and run a few tests. It’s not without risk, since they’re poking at his character’s code, and they’ve made a backup but can’t be sure that’ll work if something goes wrong, so he’s given a cred stipend. He doesn’t tell Buffy or Willow (or anyone, really) about it; they talked about the program and Buffy said it was too risky, so she forbade anyone from taking part. He’s just doing it in secret.

He also keeps active in Discord. He wanted to run a youtube or twitch channel but didn’t particularly want to use his face. He’d started contemplating vtubing using Val as his face but then the Tear happened. Fans of the franchise continue to be fans of the franchise, and a lot actually are interested in helping out with research on their end, because it’s not dangerous for them. He does also have some thirsty fans, but luckily a mod keeps them in check and he’s managed to get them to be fairly respectful, even when they log in.

Xander did talk the devs out of giving players trapped in the game anything they might want. It’s still a society that needs to function, he pointed out. Instead, all trapped players get the same amount of cred deposited in their account every week, enough to cover basic cost of living + a little more. It doesn’t really reflect the capitalistic cyberpunk spirit of the game, but it does let them all breathe a little easier.

Val actually does drink at bars, but what he usually does is get one, secrete himself in a corner, people-watch all night, and nurse his drink. He sometimes hears important information this way, but also just gets to know people and know of people, which is important.

Xander didn’t used to care about other people or saving the world or anything. Helping people out, not just his friends, made him feel good. Feel happy. Like he actually mattered. Like he was a good guy. It’s mostly this that makes him think Val is a better person than Xander, even though he knows that’s slightly neurotic and they’re obviously the same person and he’s the only one that thinks of himself and his avatar as different people.

This is probably the happiest I am with the Elysium Cipher costumes, apart from the fact that the eye-glow is a little off.  City of Heroes, as always.

madimpossibledreamer: Izanagi|Souji in full costume holding out a hand (persona 4)

He probably goes for outfits like this more often.  The skin still isn't quite right and you can't change sclera in CoH sadly (that'd be a neat feature though!)

Another attempt at Valichar's clothes in CoH.  I like the jacket, and I think he does too, but he probably doesn't wear it too often.

madimpossibledreamer: Dante fighting demons (dante)
This isn't perfect but this is the closest I could get to Valichar's clothing options in City of Heroes (though not 100% sure on skin color; I don't know if akuma would have normal human skin colors as options).  Specifically, this is one of the times he uses the Shadow Scream which manifests the wings and tail.

I was exploring the subbasement as part of my duties today when I opened a disused closet and found a skeleton. I must have screamed, because the Head Librarian came running and then said, upon seeing the bones, “Oh, it’s just Gold.” Upon further query, it transpired that this was roughly the same events that had introduced her to Gold, and the novelty had worn off by now. I have resolved to go through all the records to try to see if I can’t find some reference as to who this Gold person might be and why their bones are in our subbasement.

Tohil is one of the most powerful of the Lords of Xibalba, other than Lord Akan and Lord Kisin. At some point, some overlap or cooperation existed between Tohil and Kukulkan. Tohil is a god of fire, the sun, war, rain, the mountains, sacrifice, hunting, thunder, lightning, rain, and sustenance. He was the most important of the trio including Awilix and Jacawitz. Depictions show a face emerging from the jaws of a snake, and a deerskin bundle is considered sacred.

Like Prometheus, Tohil brought fire to the people, but unlike the Titan, his services were not given for free. If the Mayans wanted to keep that fire, they had to practice blood sacrifice, a trade many of the Mayans took freely. Tohil is one of the gods where cutting out the victim’s heart was practiced. Quetzal feathers (usually associated with Kukulkan) were sometimes offered during rituals, as well as blood. It is possible his services with ensuring rain for crops were also paid for in a similar manner. One tribe refused to pay the blood tribute and stole fire and thus was banished and declared an enemy of the people. He does actually take several forms, one of which helps the sun travel across the sky during the day (and also happens to be one of the Hero Twins, which likely angers several of his fellow Lords of Xibalba, though whether this is a case of a new avatar or a rebirth of the deity is unknown). Specifically, he was the one that Camazotz had previously beheaded. One might argue this was a case of trying to take out the competition, to get all of the sacrifices for himself.

His presence might very well have been curiosity, and perhaps a taunt, as he and his brother helped trap many of them within Xibalba. Tohil has full ability to leave Xibalba and his his own place of power elsewhere. He also happens to be one of the gods with the highest current worship, though his characteristics have been partially merged with several different Christian saints, and most blood sacrifice has been quenched, though some demons may still practice such rites in exchange for power. Tohil, like Balam and Kukulkan, places some emphasis on retaining the same human worshipers, while the rest of the Lords of Death don’t put much stock in retaining the worship of the same civilization. As such, while he would not cause vast destruction, it’s highly possible while bored he might cause small disasters just to amuse himself, particularly as he has the capability to undo those very same harms.
