Volume VI: This volume opens with us meeting Pixie and her Stand Miss Murder as she targets her latest victim. Also included are the police reports investigating the death of Dr. Ackerman and Darling Violetta’s adoptive parents, as well as copycat murders and some of the Stand Users and Slayers who had died, brought to Andrew by a cop, Officer Davidson. As he had a connection with the Council, he wanted to warn them that evidence had placed Xander at the scene and was also concerned about any trouble that might be brewing.
Giorno then comes to visit Buffy, seeking further allies in his fight against Wolfram & Hart, particularly since they are recruiting Stand Users, including ones previously known to Sarde and the Speedwagon Foundation, with the test an elimination of a target, such as Xander, also known as Johan. Giles isn’t on board with direct action, though, so he proposes he and Buffy go undercover to discover more, such as the location of the Stand Arrow Wolfram & Hart had gotten their hands on.
The Siphon also makes his first appearance, likewise ‘going undercover’ as a ‘demonic’ mercenary, gaining more power from the demons he absorbs in his quest to find and destroy an Old One, and is told that the Slayer line’s power comes from having been merged with an Old One, as well as of Wesley’s ambition to Ascend to become an Old One himself. Josephine, Josuke, and Okuyasu also meet up.
With Oingo’s help, Giorno and Buffy take on a different appearance—that of members of Passione looking to betray ‘the New Boss’ and meet Francis and Sawyer, lawyers at Wolfram & Hart. Giorno tells a story suggesting that, in fact, like the Fountain of Youth, Giovanna had actually been the Old Boss, too, using the entirely fake vulnerability to lure out and quash rebellion. While they’re there, scientists in the weapons division start arguing for seemingly no reason, though Buffy draws a connection to the chalice which had been behind the trial and suspicion in Volume I, and a guard, acting possessed, floods the laboratory.
After their escape, Giorno confirms Buffy’s instincts, and Giles scolds them both for drawing attention, which makes Buffy leave for a breather. Jotaro tests her to make sure that she can survive a Stand battle, allowing her to leave once she’s proven herself.
Sawyer, a telepath, makes his report to Wesley, revealing that the ‘suspicion’ effect is not the doing of Wolfram & Hart (or at least, not Wesley’s faction). The Siphon had also killed the Ram and the entire Silicon Valley branch.
While dealing with her issues by generally patrolling and seeking out fights, Buffy saves a man who introduces himself as Severin Montreux, a witch who uses the power of the sun to fight demons and vampires, tells her that his girlfriend had been a Slayer killed by Wolfram & Hart, and warns her about an attempt at an Ascension, and in order to prevent it (or get more answers, at least), they travel to Italy and fight some of the local W&H vampires and demons. They also take a stop to try to retrieve the Stone Mask from the local Slaypire population which had taken over a local Italian island, and run into Fugo’s handiwork (and Fugo himself). Between Buffy knowing Giorno and Severin’s knowledge of Neapolitan Italian, they manage to earn his trust.
The island was apparently the home of another group of Pillar Men in the past, and Buffy also picks up a sword. They interrogate the last survivor, Simone, who tells them W&H had already been there and taken the mask for the Ascension. Fugo and Severin’s tempers feed into each other. After they finish and are leaving, in the street on the mainland they are attacked by the User of Three Days Grace. Josuke, Josie, and Okuyasu also fight off another W&H interviewee, the User of Blue Oyster Cult. Koichi, Yukako, and Hol Horse investigate another branch of W&H and fight Peter Gabriel’s Sobek, with a powerful bite, and Lacuna Coil’s Apophis, scarab beetles that can inject a powerful venom into wounds. Severin’s needling of Fugo gets worse, but fortunately Fugo is ordered away before he completely loses his temper.
After he slips away from their hotel, Buffy follows Severin to a demon bar and reveals that she’d been waiting for him to betray her, since she’d had a Slayer Dream warning her. She saves them, earning a thanks, and then goes after Severin, who she’s realized is also known as the Siphon and is using hamon, beating him in a difficult fight with Willow, Shizuka and Sineya’s help. After the fight, he reveals his true name as Severin Reuel Zeppeli and informs them of Wesley’s plan to Ascend to become an Old One. Josuke tries to save Severin, being fairly certain that Severin’s been affected by something, while Shizuka, Buffy, Mista, Josephine, and Okuyasu watch to stop him if he tries anything, but in reverting whatever had affected him kills him.
Volume VII: The volume begins with Josephine and Buffy processing previous events. The Siphon absorbing Slayer power connected him to the Slayer network, so all Slayers now have the latent ability to use the Ripple, and Josephine is processing the fact that she’s a mother and her son used his Stand to take on eldritch powers, too. Buffy distracts her by asking her for tips on using hamon, though.
Johan, Fitz, Darling, Robin, and Captain Beefheart also regroup after their respective fights with London Calling in Volume V. They discuss the information Fitz found on Sarde and come to the conclusion it’s worth investigating, as well as discovering that Xander is, in fact, wanted for questioning by the police due to his blood being found at the scene of the Shark Tank murder.
There’s also a flashback to Fitz’s past; he’s still struggling with the fact that he used to be in a gang, though he does notice they all have dark parts of their past, including Johan, who, he realizes, might have been abused, since he understands Darling better than he should without such experience. He calls Johan by the name Xander for the first time, because that past matters as well, and sets aside his quest for revenge in favor of looking for the truth behind Sarde’s actions.
They attend a musical based on Queen, but they and the other playgoers are attacked by two Stand Users—Pixie, with Miss Murder, able to repeat tragedies that occurred in a particular location, and “Alice Cooper”, Anne’s granddaughter and dead Stand User, with Twisted Sister, a kris that can summon Shadows to kill a target or cause fear. Darling gets to have a twisted tea party with Darling, as they discuss justice. The attack is devastating, and Johan has a conversation with a shade of a familiar woman about a priest and gravity.
Captain Beefheart flies them to a small town near Windknight’s Lot for a chance to recover with an ally, Father Styx. Father Styx turns out to be a ‘technochristian’, an acquaintance of Jenny Calendar. Pixie follows them and recreates the attack of Dio Brando’s zombies on the location, including Dio Brando himself. Sir Bruford and William Zeppeli, likewise brought back by the power of Miss Murder, help prevent the worst of the casualties. They manage to stall long enough Styx and his allies can cast a spell to disintegrate all the vampires and zombies and Miss Murder’s effect runs out, though Johan tries to stop time, which nearly kills him. He has a brief conversation with Zeppeli, and then Styx lets him know he’s needed back in the real world.
Styx then finds proof of the particular type of Old One Wesley plans to become—a Pillar Man. An anonymous caller also tells Giorno that they have helped reduce Wesley’s forces.
Diavolo dies again.
On their attempt to travel to Mexico, the location of the ritual, someone snipes down Beefheart’s plane, including Johan and his other allies. They are then trapped by one of Wesley’s demon allies, Tukákame, in a mirage town. Tukákame reveals he had worked with Georg Schmied, a Nazi scientist that sought refuge in Mexico after the war, as well as Wolfram & Hart, forcing Beefheart to face the legacy of her grandfather.
