This song was absolutely perfect and was part of the planning the minute I heard it. Thanks, Poets of the Fall. That being said, this is probably one of the chapters where the lyrics are really important and I absolutely encourage you to listen when you read this chapter. "Wake up, your chains are porcelain/Like a phoenix from the ashes we will rise again."
I apologize for the cliffhanger, but if you're too worried check the warnings.
Not in graphic detail, but like last chapter this absolutely has Jojo’s/Buffy violence.
We were always heading here. This was planned from the prologue and I almost can't believe we're actually here. What a ride it's been, and I hope you continue to stick with me.
( Chapter 292: Requiem for My Harlequin )
Note: Probably next week I’ll start uploading a few other things to Ao3, maybe on the weekends. When I made the ‘I’m not going to put anything else on Ao3 until this is finished’ promise, I didn’t expect it to go quite this long. I’d estimate we still have...I dunno, 3, 4 volumes yet? This series is still a very high priority, though.
Mayan shamans tended to use stingray spines, particularly in sacrifices. The incense is called Copal, not that Xander would know that. And to deliver the blood, it'd usually be placed on something, like paper, and burned.

( Chapter 140: Burning on the Inside )
( Chapter 139: Shedding the Skin )
( Interlude: The Tangled Web We Weave )
( Chapter 102: That Horseman, Pestilence, Part I, aka Thought Contagion )
The members of the USS Valkyrie were chosen for their connection with the supernatural and ancient legends. Starfleet accidentally opened a Hellmouth and were utterly incapable of dealing with the demons that followed.
They panicked. They looked for anyone who might have a connection to the supernatural and rushed them either through the Academy or from other assignments.
The only reason they didn’t completely lose their minds is that they had Admiral Giles around to tell them of the earlier days of the world.
Buffy was brought in as Valley Girl Turned Starfleet Cadet. The change was not understood and certainly drew attention, and her mother and father certainly didn’t approve of the career change.
If Slayers exist, the legends have been lost. She’s still a mystery, but her skill with handling the supernatural and her tested loyalty to Starfleet makes her the ideal Captain. She was in the Command Track and made (sort of) friends with a few others joining her on this “crazy ride”.
Willow’s from some sort of witch species. She’s been casting small spells all her life, and her kind struggles with magic addiction, too. When she was young, she moved and met Xander.
There are plenty of jokes about cavemen with Xander. His mom crash landed on a long-lost Earth colony that had taken its cues from popular visions of the Middle Ages. Upon rescue, he’d thrown himself wholeheartedly into pop culture—centuries of it—and science, especially computers and starships. That’s part of why he and Willow got along so well, babbling about random science things at each other. Later on, he learned that he intimidated people, so he dumbed it down.
The thing is, he’s more out there than Scotty. His approach is mostly ‘jury rig’. Haphazard, like his love life. His understanding of the machinery is sometimes more instinctive than it is academic.
Oz was taken from another ship. He’s only half-human. His people are new to the Federation, but they’ve had myths for a long time, and they turn out to be relevant. He’s their Chief Helmsman.
Admiral Giles personally recommended Wesley, since he couldn’t physically be present. Wesley knows the legends and the languages just as well, just isn’t as well trained in fighting or Away Mission type things.
Their first CMO is Ben Wilkinson. He probably gets replaced after the ‘episode’ The Hand of Glory or The Glory Days, not sure on title, with Tara Maclay, a healer/empath.
Angel is the Security Chief. His inclusion on the Valkyrie was part of the terms of the Aberie joining the Federation. (They’re secretive but it turns out they’re basically vampires who fled the various homeworlds and resolved to not cause trouble to outsiders as to not bring down witch-hunt type things on the whole. In-fighting is different.)
I’m still working on figuring out who everyone else is. Anyone have any bright ideas for Tactical, Counselor (?, not required), or Navigator, or any other places the others might have on the ship?
A/N: Ahn or Anya will be explained in-story soon.

CAST OF CHARACTERS FIRST APPEARING IN CHAPTER 3
Andrew Wells-A reformed warlock/supervillain nerd that is now a Watcher.
Wesley Wyndam-Price-He is a former Watcher that was kicked out of the previous Watcher's Council. He did a brief stint as a Rogue Demon Hunter before joining up with Angel Investigations, run by none other than Angel. He also followed Angel and the others in the pseudo-detective agency into Wolfram & Hart, Firm of the Evil Demon Lawyers, ostensibly to harness the resources of the LA branch to do good rather than evil. Considering a number of things that happened during their employment, this may have been but a mere foolish pipe dream. Wesley, however, is still very useful when it comes to research.
