Rosenberg’s blinking, seems to be coming to. That’s something, anyway. Jotaro’s not celebrating yet. Josuke’s rising, eyes dull and unseeing. That moment of slight concern disappears. Asshole’s going to just keep doing this until they die, and he’s probably something between a vampire and Pillar Man, so his stamina’s got to be pretty good. He can outlast them. Probably counting on that, too, the bastard. But there’s one thing—he’s counting on no one being able to figure this out, and sure, he’s good. Jotaro’s better.
It’s just targeting them one at a time. If he could take them all out at the same time, he would’ve. So that’s a limitation, not a choice. Most likely, it’s a Stand. Just makes sense, really. He’d gone to all that trouble of getting his hands on a Stand Arrow.
Sure, like DIO he’d gone and created an army to slow them down. But he wouldn’t power up fully immediately, and maybe he’d be vulnerable in the meantime, so. Stand. Just more insurance.
And he grimaces, there’s a nasty thought. Maybe it’s less that it hadn’t gone to plan, and it was an ‘over time’ thing. Which means, maybe, the longer this goes, the stronger he’ll get. Yare yare, hopefully not.
Touching the body? Maybe using the corpse as a trap, like with Dr. Tsuji. But that doesn’t fit. Only two of them had gone and done that, and sure, it kept them busy, as Star Platinum’s having to keep an eye out for what they’re gonna do when possessed, rather than the perfect opportunity to wreck his face. Speaking of which, Josuke looks like he’s going to try to drown himself in that pool of blood.
He’s going to have to use just the right timing there, too. Lucky this room isn’t very big, so it’s not really out of range.
Giovanna, apparently, doesn’t think their chances are very good. Or maybe he’d just worked out Gold Experience’s animals weren’t too helpful, and giving this guy more life doesn’t seem to be doing too much. The army of snakes had worked, briefly, tying down Wyndam-Price’s mobility and keeping them from directly touching the bastard’s skin and being absorbed. Then the asshole just started absorbing them, too. Still a layer between them and him, but it just made him heal faster. So now Giovanna’s staying away from the fight, probably using the Requiem Arrow, but that takes time. Might work, but they’ll probably have losses before that point, ‘cause even if Jotaro managed to pull Josuke out before he’d been submerged too long, he can’t keep this up, probably. Especially as his uncle’s stopped breathing. Heart’s still beating, thank goodness, but he’s not conscious. Vomits out blood when Star starts CPR and starts breathing again, but it’s a near thing, and Jotaro’s had enough.
And then Star spots something out of the corner of his eye, and Jotaro smirks right back. Who says precision is useless in a Stand? ‘Cause that, right there, has to be the asshole’s Stand. Looks nasty, like a blood message on the wall, only the ink’s running down the wall, rolling over to Giles, and the truth slams into Jotaro like a road roller. The Stand’s two conditions. The reason for the order in the targeting. The reason for the light. And something else—the faintest glimmer of something in Giles’ hands. He’d been preoccupied on the plane, sure, but he hadn’t missed Giles and Rosenberg discussing the use of spells—or, in this case, an artifact—to create artificial sunlight. Only, just like with the Requiem Arrow, that takes time, and from the glimmer, he hasn’t gotten there yet. Close, but not quite. If conditions stay as they are, he probably won’t make it. They’ve got limited time, but he can buy them some. A delay’s all they need.
Star’s triumphant as he stops time, yelling out Ora over and over again proudly as he breaks all of the lights before time resumes. When it does, he hears the end of Summers’ sentence— “...don’t want to use that, Giles.” And then there’s the moment of shocked silence, when she realizes it’s as dark as the abyssal zone. ‘Cause it’s deep enough, it’s not getting any naturally.
And if this doesn’t work out, they’ve always got Gold Experience Requiem as a backup.
Jotaro puts one hand in his pocket and the other on his hat. He doesn’t have to see to do such familiar actions. Doesn’t matter if no one will see. He’ll know. “I wouldn’t say that. Maybe you should give him what he wants.” It’s the perfect opportunity for Giles to say something cool, and yeah, okay, so he’s done a lot of missteps and he’s not Jotaro’s favorite person, but he gets it.
“Wesley, you may have forsaken the day, but it’s not done with you yet, I’m afraid.” And then it’s blinding.
When Jotaro can see again, just as expected, the bastard’s a statue. Twitching, maybe crumbling a little, but regenerating before that can take him out.
And then Josephine recovers just enough, grabbing one of Giorno’s surviving crimson snakes and essentially just using it as a hamon-infused garrote, pulling taut until the head goes flying off. Oddly, the small smile looks a little relieved. The body finally decides to crumble to dust, a vampire in the end. Damn.
“Jotaro-san,” Josuke coughs, sounding a little clearer if more in pain as Giorno comes over and starts healing his lungs. “Johan?”
Jotaro’s phone starts ringing, and he doesn’t bother answering Josuke, picking up instead. “You’ve got some sense of timing, Kakyoin.”
“The dream was right, but it’s not good, I’m afraid. Johan-kun is barely alive,” his friend reports, and Jotaro glances over at the body on the slab, revulsion and sorrow no doubt plastered all over his face. He couldn’t afford to think about it other than as a source of rage during the fight, but now? Now, he lets the close call of his relative, chest brutally cut open, heart missing, not even with a surgeon’s tools by the look of it, but probably that stingray spine lying over there, wash over him.
“Could be worse. Could be a lot worse,” he grunts. Yare yare, if he just holds his other hand on his hat like this, everybody’s going to see his hand tremble. Better put it in his pocket, instead.
Kakyoin doesn’t ask, but Jotaro can practically feel that curiosity over the phone.
“The story you got about that Stand, the one of the same type as Surface? As usual, you know your stuff.”
He doesn’t have to elaborate further. Kakyoin gets it. Hell, Josuke gets it, because he’s suddenly weakly making it to his feet, having pulled the energy from somewhere. “Gureito-daze, does that mean what I think it means?”
Josephine still seems a little in shock, but the second she realizes, she’ll be happy. And probably furious.
“We’re going. Giles, you’re up front.” They’ll need to see to avoid the traps on their way back out, and between Kakyoin’s directions and Hierophant’s tendrils, it’ll be faster to find them than it was getting here.
