He’d very carefully not stated his own position on the subject, but then, maybe that’s not what Kirk had been going for anyway. Maybe he’d just been looking for subtle things to give Khan away.
Kirk stands, bowing a little as he does so. Shockingly, Khan bows back. Less so, but he hadn’t bothered with anyone else. “I should let you get your rest; you were, after all, pretty fatigued when we first woke you up. And Mr. Khan, thank you for confirming something for me.” He smiles again. “My science officer didn’t put classified information about Tarsus IV on that padd.”
“Are you accusing me of hacking into your systems, Captain?”
“You and your crew are not my only problem, Mr. Khan.”
Hinting at this is...an interesting choice, for Kirk. Hopefully it doesn’t backfire on them all.
“Then...why would you have been prepared for this conversation?” Because...actually, yeah, he was.
“I had a suspicion.”

 

“If you were looking at sabotaging a scientific project, how would you go about it?”
“You’re not really subtle.”
“To be fair, I’m not trying to be.”
“And you’re not the hypothetical saboteur?”
“What? No! Sorry, I’m realizing how that sounded. No, Carol’s worried about something.”

 

“That was remarkably simple.”
“It’s not a trap,” Marcus declares with the kind of confidence that ensures if there is one, he will be ill-prepared.

 

“Are we endeavoring to destroy the ship or capture it?”
“Capture, of course. There’s regulations,” as if that would stop him, but Spock supposes that the Admiral is attempting to suggest that everyone is to act as if it would, “...but more than that, we need to know what happened to the Genesis Prototype if it’s not on board that ship itself, and we can’t be blasting the hostage out of the sky, either.”

 

“Why’d you want it in writing so badly?”
“Just like contracts. It’s something I’ll need if it comes to a court martial.”

 

“Doc! Would you like to join—”
“When were you going to tell me about this other timeline?” he interrupts, and a hush falls.
Kirk sighs and then meets his eyes, the usual layers of captaincy falling until McCoy’s actually seeing—well, Jim, probably. “Mostly whenever I’d figured out how to word it so you wouldn’t immediately put me in for a psych eval.”
“The rest of us experienced it,” Sulu agrees, and Spock immediately takes up the thread like they’d practiced it. Except now McCoy’s pretty sure that they hadn’t—not that there wasn’t a conspiracy, because there almost certainly was, but they all work together like a well-oiled machine through just good teamwork.
“You, however, have had no such evidence with which to verify our claims. Thus, the likelihood that you would believe us was rather low.” He’s also visibly restraining himself from giving actual percentage points, McCoy would bet on it.

 

 

“Half-Vulcan, Doctor.” The old Vulcan merely smiles at McCoy’s surprise. “It took me some time to appreciate my heritage, but it is important to me.”

“I presume, like all candidates, you learned of the Mirror Universe.”
“You’re evil,” McCoy drawls skeptically.
“If one exists, then it follows that others should not come as a surprise.”

 

“We’ve met, haven’t we?” he asks, because that could explain this. That could explain all of this. The strange feeling of déjà vu, of familiarity, the second he’s stepped on board. The way they’re all watching him. Because he’d belonged here, once upon a time, and just hadn’t known yet.
“I can with all honesty tell you that we have never met in our lifetime,” the old Vulcan says, and that’s a complete non-answer given from a very select choice of words.
“Don’t play games with me, you blasted Vulcan,” he hisses and watches Spock almost successfully hide a smile. “All right, we haven’t met each other, but you’ve met a Doctor Leonard McCoy before, haven’t you?”
He nods gravely, proudly. “I should have known better than to try to evade your inquiries, Doctor.”
McCoy crosses his arms and makes up his mind. “Funny you should call it plural, because I think I’ve got a couple more I think I’d like you to answer.”

 

“I want the memories.”
“I briefly thought that they’d purposefully chosen a planet we’d reject, but then realized they didn’t know the future, either, and so that can’t have been the reason. I do think Marcus is rushing things—the Admiral, McCoy, not his daughter—as retaliation, and I’m sure he has something else up his sleeve.”
