Chapter Summary: Dante finally hears some good news.

“Know where he is?” he asks. There wouldn’t be a point in much of anything else.
“Dante? Get here, now.” ...Huh. Leon had been a little more talkative during the whole interrogation thing.
Maybe he should joke to try to break the tension a little. “As long as you’re not having me arrested this time.”
“No, I paid the fine.” It’s entirely possible he mistake’s Dante’s stunned silence as disapproval or something, because he continues, a little nervous. “You’re pretty much family, and I don’t use a lot of my paycheck anyway, so…”
Dante might be a seasoned devil hunter, but he realizes pretty abruptly that there are some situations even he has no experience with, and this, right here? This is absolutely one of them. He has never, not once, had someone just...pay for him, not unless there’s a tab or expectation of being paid back, but with the way Leon’s downplaying it he absolutely doesn’t want to make Dante think much about his act of generosity, at all. Dante is definitely not giving into the urge to cry in front of Lady, though; she’ll just make fun of him, probably.
Something else, too—Xander’s the luckiest of the three brothers when it comes to his love life. Nero had done pretty well for himself, too, and Vergil mostly did that to himself, but—
“And there’s—maybe it’s a bit of a bribe because there’s something about Xander you don’t know—” he continues rambling, and it’s probably worth interrupting him now.
Sweet of him to be worried about that, but Dante’s got different standards. “Look, as long as he hasn’t tried to destroy the world, I’m not going to kick up a fuss.”
It occurs to him now that maybe that’s not the sort of thing you should probably say to a guy who works for The Man, because that’s an extremely long pause. “I’m...a little concerned that you can say that, but it’s not like I haven’t dealt with something similar. I’m just...the family he grew up with wasn’t great, so this just...it really needs to go well.”
“Leon, take a deep breath.” He actually waits. It sucks when he’s the one with the clear head; it’s less fun. “I know he’s only a half brother or whatever, but again, I’m never holding that against him. If he’s cool, then we’re cool. Now, he’s still alive?”
“It...might be a trap, but my gut’s telling me it’s not, and I don’t want my gut to be wrong,” Leon admits, all nervous energy, and yeah that makes sense. “Late last night, one of the Slayers manning the lines got someone tapping out Xan, SOS on a public pay phone. One of those islands that some rich jerk bought, only it’s magically protected, so there’s definitely something going down. We’ve been doing some preliminary checks and it’s as good as a lead as we’ve gotten, so we’re getting a team together, and I figured you should be there.”
“We’ll be there,” Dante promises. “Like that was ever any question.”
“Thank you.” That’s unnecessary, too, but whatever, Leon’s under some stress, he’s not gonna fault the guy.
“Guess that means we can stop wasting our time and get to the main event, huh,” Lady asks, the picture of casual even as she slings Kalina Ann over her shoulder and starts prepping her guns.
“Yep. It’s showtime.” It might be a little superstitious, true, but Dante’s getting the feeling this is the real deal, after all those failed leads, too.

Thankfully she hadn’t actually gone after him for giving her number to a government official, but he’s pretty sure it’s just a temporary thing while Xander’s missing and she’s not going to cut him the same slack later. She tosses the phone at him without even a warning, and if he drops it, she’d probably make him pay for it. “It’s your new brother-in-law.”
