Chapter Summary: Leon examines the structure of the ISWC for improvements.
Word Count: 540
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Leon/Xander
Leon has never really thought of himself as a systems person. Okay, yeah, so while he’d still been bright-eyed and naïve he’d been a rule-follower, but after that his late teenage rebellion had never really stopped.
The sad thing is, he still has a better sense of how to set up an organization than this. He’s not a fan of bureaucracy, but he gets the purpose there. Sometimes it’s necessary. This looks more like it’s cobbled together from knowledge gained from fiction, and it’s already threatening to give him a headache. Hunnigan would probably get a migraine just glancing at the thing. (The sadder thing is, it probably was based on fiction, because this is a group of teenagers who have been making it up as they go since forever with no adults actually helping them figure out how things are supposed to go, and that makes him swallow his anger.)
“That bad, huh?” Xander asks, making sure he’s finished chewing before he speaks (like Leon will care; he’s just happy the guy’s enjoying the other half of the pizza, even after it’s gone cold). His tone is light, but there’s a little hurt underneath, like he’d been hoping to impress his crush, which just fuels the anger a little more.
Leon sighs, thinking through his words. “Given how useless you said the last set of Watchers was, I’m surprised it’s this good,” is the choice he settles on. “There’s still room for improvement, obviously, but if I had to improvise not knowing anything about how to actually do this, I guarantee my attempt would be a lot worse.”
“You don’t have to try to make me feel better,” Xander tries to argue, and in response Leon reaches out and takes his hand again. That makes him go quiet pretty quickly, even if he looks a little shocked about it (which also makes Leon’s heart hurt, made all the worse by the fact that this is the second time and he’s still surprised, and honestly, if he needs romantic gestures like this, Leon will absolutely pull out all the stops, because the dork he loves deserves every bit of it).
“I’m not. I mean, I’m ready to crown you King of Understatement, but I’m definitely not lying. I’m not saying it’s great, but it is definitely better than I expected. Hunnigan would weep, but she tends to be in a stressful job without much outlet so she can be a bit melodramatic at times—and yeah, I know that describes me too.” He shrugs. “I’ll do what I can before we even think about bringing her in on this, though you definitely should be thinking about the procedure you plan on using to bring her in. I can guarantee the method you used with me is not the one you want to keep using.”
Xander laughs and shakes his head. “Okay, point taken. Plus, uh…we should maybe figure out an exchange thing so we can share info and resources without breaking any rules, right?” He’s definitely practiced the cute puppy look.
“One thing at a time,” Leon states, squeezing Redgrave’s hand. From the happy smile, it looks like he’d managed to correctly communicate that it’s a promise, not a dismissal.
