Chapter Summary:
Having Xander as a boyfriend comes with perks, like backup at odd hours.
Word Count: 925
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Leon/Xander

By far the worst thing about being a police officer and then agent, Leon thinks blearily as he squints at the phone on the nightstand, is having to answer the phone at odd hours. He paws at it briefly, feeling clumsy as he shakes off the sleep, but eventually manages to get it into his hand. And then feels sleep disappear all at once when he reads the name of who’s calling.
“Are you free for a trip to Brazil?” Claire doesn’t sound hurt. Her voice is strained, and she’s trying to hide how worried she is, so the situation is bad, but she’s okay for now.
“I’m on assignment right now, and I’m guessing Chris isn’t available?” Which, yeah, he’s not about to abandon his team or leave potential bioterrorists get away with whatever they’re planning. But he’s not about to let her handle a situation alone—hang on, an idea occurs to him. “Let me call you back.”
“Okay. I’ll text Chris while I wait.” So she hadn’t asked him, probably because he’d yell at her for getting herself involved again. Well…no, from Chris it’d be more like a disappointed expression, but Leon doesn’t particularly like being on the receiving end of those, and he’s not Redfield’s brother.
Maybe it’d make more sense to call Rosenberg, as their equivalent to Hunnigan, but he wants to talk to his boyfriend because he’s trying not to panic about the situation.
“Hey, babe. Is a team free?” Sure, he wants to hide in the pleasantries, but he’s not sure how urgent the situation is.
Xander sounds wide awake. Unlike him. Which probably means a time zone difference, but his brain is still a little too tired to be doing even simple math. “For you, anything. Just say where.”
“The backup’s not for me. Claire.” He really is trying not to panic. “Brazil, apparently.”
“Oh, uh, Redfield?” The importance of that, apparently, is not lost on the half-devil. “Absolutely. I’m on it. I can even probably get Willow to track ‘em using magic.” He pauses, and adds, “…Leon? Breathe.”
Abruptly Leon realizes he hasn’t been and gasps for air. But Xander’s not judging, and that’s because his good-looking partner is the best. “Yeah, sorry.”
“Hey, I get it. She’s family,” Xander states simply, and it’s kind of true, isn’t it, even though he’s not marrying in or anything. Sometimes family is more than blood. “We’ve got this. You’ve seen me in action, so you know this. I am heading to HQ now and we’ll figure it out. If you can get her to narrow down her location any more than that, it’ll save time. I’ll text you when she’s safe.”
That does help. Logically, he’d known sending Xander is just as good if not better than sending himself, but it’s better to hear it from Redgrave, in Redgrave’s words. He finds the tension draining away. “Take care of yourself. And thanks.” He still can’t quite bring himself to say ‘I love you’ out loud, but fortunately he’s not alone there, and Xander hears it anyway.
“Anytime, Agent. You too.” A long, slow breath, Xander gearing himself up for war, and then he hangs up.
Kennedy shakes his head. There’s no point in worrying about this, because it’s out of his hands now. He needs to call Claire back. “Hey, Claire? I’ve got backup coming.”
“Oh, good. Chris was going to defy orders to get here.” And might not even get there in time, she doesn’t say. She doesn’t have to. “I’ll tell him not to come. Do you know when they’ll be here?”
Oh. Uh. This is awkward. He hadn’t planned out this far. “Soon. Hang on, write this number down, that’ll be for the leader. Text him anything you can about your location so it’ll make it easier to find you.” He’s known Xander’s number by heart for at least six months now, he realizes, even before he’d known he liked the guy. Yet another sign he should’ve noticed. Although maybe it’s because crushes tend to smash him over the head, totally unsubtle, than creep up on him like this. “You’ll probably know them when you see them. Most of them look fully human, although the leader doesn’t all the time, but they’re definitely the good guys. It’ll probably be a lot of women with medieval weapons and maybe a couple of people with magic.”
The silence on the other end of the line communicates her absolute lack of comprehension and the way she’s probably staring at the phone contemplating his sanity better than anything she could say.
“I’m serious. You’ll see. Don’t shoot at them, particularly if the leader shows up with wings.” Xander would say it didn’t hurt, but Xander lies about that kind of thing a lot, mostly because he doesn’t want to worry anyone.
A long silence stretches before Claire responds. “Okay. If you trust these people, Leon, I trust you.”
He sighs in relief. “You can interrogate me later, when we’ve both made it through this.” Because there’s a lot he hasn’t told her because he hadn’t found the words, and he understands Xander’s conundrum a whole lot better now. Sure, she might be upset he didn’t tell her about Slayers and magic and demons now, but he has a feeling she’ll be even more upset he didn’t tell her he was dating, once she knows. She already teased him enough about Ada, concern and amusement both clear in her words.
“That’s a promise,” she confirms warmly, and then hangs up.
