unpopular opinion: the dresden files tv show is not actually bad. no, it's not the books, but Butcher himself said it's not meant to be the books ("It is meant as an alternate world, where the  overall background and story-world is similar, but not all the same things happen.").  it's got the spirit of the books down, and Butcher thought that the depiction of Bob was actually an improvement.  Which makes sense, because Terrance Mann is awesome.  in general actually the casting of everyone is awesome and I prefer Conrad Coates as Morgan, rather than what's usually shown (yes I also own graphic novels. and the roleplaying system) I think the scruffy look fits Dresden better even though long coats are badass, and I also really like the touches of having his staff be a hocky stick and his blasting rod be a drumstick because those are everyday items that a street wizard would use. also Ancient Mai is awesome.  Her entire intro scene in Storm Front was great, and also Things That Go Bump which is my favorite episode and also has more awesome Morgan.  She came off to me as more nuanced (I don't remember her actually being in the books) but I could be wrong as I don't have a horse in that particular race.  I am ready, willing, and excited to be informed!  I do miss Marcone and the Alphas, though.  ...that's pretty much it, actually.

EDIT: It also is missing 90% of the skeevy stuff.  Bob is more tame, even the SUCCUBUS episode happens to be...weirdly tasteful for the subject matter?  and have an oddly familiar character if you've seen certain scifi?  there's no white court, there's no winter mantle, there's no skeevy interactions with underage apprentice, there's only a touch of the chivalry thing and it's not the RUB IT IN YOUR FACE THIS IS GOOD FOR YOU version, women get to be competent without being SCARY and it's not so focused on the 'they are pretty' (okay, half of that might be the fact it's 3rd person + voiceovers, but  still).  What About Bob, an AMAZING episode with Bob, exists. The dragon episode exists.  I can ship him with Murphy and know i'm not relegating her existence to hell.  black people exist in chicago and are fairly prominent characters.  who are not evil just because they don't like the main character; they're good at their jobs and know the way this goes. lgbtq+, sadly, is not added from what I remember, but even there i'd call it a bonus because Lesbians For Male Gaze and Stereotypical Thomas Play-acting are minuses to the original, so.  also the plots make more sense.  except for Storm Front DVD edition, considering they cut the pilot in half and it no longer works.  also there's no sense of deciding who 'deserves' to be saved and who doesn't. also harry actually comes off as a powerful but still outclassed street wizard.  also sex isn't just Good for Male and has its downsides.

I also greatly enjoy crossovers that mostly involve confusion.  Xander wanders into Dean and Sam about to get flattened for being the ridiculous Hunters that they are and manages to completely confuse them, because a Scooby approach is different than a Hunter’s.

This is the third one I forgot to include in the list of inspirations for Lucky Strike.  I also read the Kashmir series after, but that's suuuper angsty.  (Good to read, probably, but I'm not reccing it because I don't think I'd reread because it's angsty.  Which, unfortunately, the lucky strike 'verse went [Coming Home, Hope's Flame, When It's All Said and Done, It's You] in the direction of as well.  Dean.  This is all your fault, fyi.  You're the reason we can't have nice things, because you have to go and angst over them all and sabotage yourself.)

This one isn't angsty, though.  It's fluffy.  Flirting, being impressed and turned on by competence?  Sign me up.  (Also, Dawn rolling her eyes and being sarcastic is great.)  It’s also fairly short, but unlike the previous one, it doesn’t deserve the M rating (a Teen rating, probably).

And by two stories that got me to ship Xander/Dean and write the rarepair, I mean three, because I forgot about one.  Durr.

Again, there’s cool dialogue (I particularly like the talking to the worm).  It’s generally short, but sweet.  Reremouse knows how to turn a phrase.

If anyone wants to know why I wrote Lucky Strike or future installments in the first place, this is one of two fics that are pretty much the entire reason it happened.  In other words, this is one of two fics that started me shipping a new ship, which is pretty good for any fic.  All the characters are well-written, there’s at least a nod to Dean’s paranoia (which is ridiculous, seriously), and the natural feel of the plot comes from that.  Also, yeah, my thing for dialogue.  I have a thing for snappy dialogue, in case it hadn’t been mentioned before.  (Don’t always succeed in including it in my own writing, but, well, I try).

I actually like Desmond—he’s a subtle character, but there is characterization (I like the contrast between the humility and the snark) and stories with him interacting with his ancestors are great.  I think the author Vampire-Badger also thought a ton of the story through more than Ubisoft, but… *shrugs*

The formatting blew my mind.  The idea of using tumblr or email or chat or BUTTONS (some of which work) to tell a story I found incredible.  Even further, most of the blogs ACTUALLY EXIST AND ALSO HELP TELL THE FIC.  It’s, like, the evolved form of tumblr rp storytelling (yeah, I lurk, partly because I don’t have time and partly cause I’m intimidated).  It’ll take you forever to dig into this and it must have been a lot of work.  It’s also meta and meta-meta.

Not the best mystery I’ve ever read, but it’s an interesting mystery with Jack and Ianto and goes into the background of Torchwood a bit.  While it doesn’t have the depth of Milady Dragon’s works, it is fun.  I’ve reread this a couple times.  It’s a popcorn fic?  (It’s also possible my mystery standards are just ridiculously high.  But it’s also one of my favorite fluffy ship!fics.  Take that as you will.)

Ø  Bleach

Ø  There’s more than just the prequel, but it’s easy enough to find the others using the author’s profile.

If you can't get enough of the Soul Society pre-Turn Back the Pendulum (i.e. me), you should check out Meifu's Gate.  You'll get hours of entertaining reading out of it (but, uh, be more intelligent than me and start when you actually have time vs when you should be working on homework.  It's nice that it's broken up into volumes, but I didn't find that helped much because I got to the end of one and just kept saying 'but I need to know what happens next'.  So, yeah, block out time).  It is longer and without the shipping of the later work Cat's Cradle, so I'd say it has a wider audience.
The characterization is amazing and I love the worldbuilding in, well, Bleach and even more so here, because I get that Bleach is shounen but I'm here for the awesome world that you're just using as a backdrop for your fights, Kubo.
This was one of two fics that formed my headcanons which is an amazing feeling (you've probably noticed by now that I love fics with awesome plot and yet more worldbuilding that add a lot to the original story).

Ø  Shunsui/Ukitake

Bleach is one of those things where it’s…odd.  In that the fights are good, but only if you care about the people who’re fighting, and otherwise don’t care.  The background worldbuilding is amazing (hence why Turn Back the Pendulum is awesome), but there’s not near enough of that.  Sadly.  Ukitake and Shunsui are my favorites, really, and this has an amazing arc.  I found it when it was unfinished, and it’s well worth reading to the end now.  (It’s also long, but most of the best fanfics are.  Just, it’ll take a while.)  The original character from the beginning honestly might not be an original character (there’s hints), though all of the other original characters are awesome and fit in (a lot of the students aren’t still around in the future but fit the setting/family), developing bankai turns Shunsui into a jerk like his family, there’s character arcs, forbidden artifacts, the Great Clans fighting among each other even as Old Man Yama tries to wrangle a school together…

Ø  Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Bleach/Others

All of the characters are very well written, and this is definitely one that I’ve returned to multiple times.  I’m not sure I’ve ever read much of the follow-up stories past the point Buffy meets Ukitake and Shunsui, but then, there was a lot more of the crossover characters I didn’t recognize in the sequels, and the intriguing long-term plot didn’t go where it was heading (I would’ve enjoyed the ‘everybody vs Aizen’ plot).  The setup for the crossover made complete sense, and there were no real plot holes, either.  Also, there are a ton of quotable lines.  Plus, it’s a YAHF that doesn’t involve just Xander, and Buffy, costume and all, is the main character.  Kinda.  Ukitake is the main character too.

More fascinating character study, more of a look into a man who ‘knows a trifle about everything’.  I love Zhuge Liang the mystery, but there’s definite hints as well, toward possibilities.  I like that it’s vague, too, and doesn’t give definite answers.  Quieter and less action than the previous one, though.

Like a feather on the wind, Zhuge Liang, or Kongming (the Sleeping Dragon) dances into danger and dances out again.  It’s a fascinating character study that also has some action.  The dialogue is excellent (well…of course it is, all of my favorites are like that…), and it served as a good extension when I was searching for something to fill in the gap when I wanted more than just watching the film for the nth time.  I still remembered this fic years later, and knew I had to go looking for it to find it again.  (It also has nothing to do with the fic, but I was rather pleased and amused to note that the author’s icon on both of their Red Cliff fics is Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century.  Good show, that.  Even if I don’t get the joke there.)
(Also, adding their fics will double the number of things in my zhuge liang tag...kinda sad when 3 of my icons are Red Cliff, really...)

A good casefic, and got me into this ship. And there’s actually relatively little of the ship, since for most of the chapters, they’re investigating different things, separately. As someone who loves detective stuff, let me say that this is one of the better casefics I’ve read in fiction.

Pepper and Buffy form an alliance to try to stop Tony from being an idiot.  It’s kind of awesome.  This story brings out the best in everyone (well, to some extent…if you can stop Tony’s curiosity at the expense of his sense of self-preservation).  When Buffy runs away after dealing with Angel, she ends up running into Tony instead.  And, y’know, once a millionaire follows you home, you have to feed them and prevent them from provoking vampires again.

Ø  Warnings: Quite possibly crack.  But only the best of crack, I solemnly swear.  (Uhh, except, y’know, it was a combination masterpiece from the Weasley Twins and Urahara, so maybe don’t trust it.)

This doesn’t have the worldbuilding of the Big Five (on my recs list), but it is nevertheless excellent.  Ichigo is quite possibly insane (but then, the same is true of Harry), Urahat reclaims his title of ‘best slightly sketchy teacher’ from Dumbledore, Voldemort’s end is, predictably given the fic, somewhat anticlimactic, and the dialogue is top-notch.  I think I read this three times in quick succession?  I’ll also point out that I almost never laugh out loud, and yet this fic made me do it at least a few times.  And I just reread it again.  Man.  I didn’t mean to spend that time, but yes, it’s great.

Quote from the actual story that sums pretty much everything up: “Whoever thought Ichigo could handle any kind of undercover anything was clearly a moron.”

Note: pretty sure the ship Ichigo/Rukia/Renji is a thing, but it’s one line (or maybe a paragraph tops) and I completely missed it on the first two reads, so I think you’re pretty safe to read it even if that’s not your cup of tea.
