( awkward conversations )

         There’s no way Mista will recognize—
         “Uh, Giorno?  What happened to your hair?”
         …He might very well kiss Mista.
         “I mentioned I wasn’t born Italian, right?”
         “O-oh.”  …Is the gunman blushing?  “I wasn’t expecting you to look so good with dark hair, too.”
         “They cut off my hair,” Giorno responds, pouting, now that his position is more secure and he can tease.
         “I like your long hair, too, but at least it grows fast, right?” 
         The Don grins, and they ready themselves for another adventure.

            “I’ll tell you however many times it takes, you’re not a burden when I want to help you.”
            Klavier’s not half as energetic as usual, but he does snuggle up a bit, leaning a grateful head on Apollo’s shoulder.  “Danke.”

         “Kristoph was the only one close to support my music carrier, and when you think about how he treated it, you’ll know how sad a statement that is.  He, of course, could play the piano perfectly—an ironic statement—while I quickly mastered the basics but was always improvising, always searching for something else.  If not rock I would have gone for jazz.”
         “Hey, I like jazz.”
         “I will perhaps play for you sometime, then.”

          “What are you doing?” Kakyoin asks finally.  Death growls, but doesn’t otherwise respond.
          Kakyoin leans against the wall and looks down.  Jotaro’s hands are big, as expected.  They’re moving more deftly than he’d expect.  He watches the paper fold and makes the connections.  “You’re…hanging around my work and doing origami.”
          Death shifts uncomfortably.  Kakyoin gets the feeling that he’s not going to respond, but just before he’s about to go back to work and stop waiting for a reply, the god does, pulling the cap lower down and looking away from Kakyoin.  “The last time I made friends with a human, they were killed.  The Old Man doesn’t have anything new, but I…”
          He’s…worried, actually.  Worried about Noriaki dying, even though as Death he can probably see a dead human whenever.  Maybe because it’d be traumatic, though he’s not kidding that he’s less concerned about it now that he’s actually met Death.  The distress is entirely weird but vaguely sweet, which is in character from what Kakyoin’s seen.
          Noriaki doesn’t know many people who would care about him that much, so it’s entirely appropriate to express his appreciation.  “Thank you for your concern, Jotaro.”
          He tries not to laugh when Death pulls his hat down further, like he’s trying to disappear into it, and mumbles ‘yare yare daze’ under his breath.  That would be rude.

         Jotaro seems frozen, staring at the wound, and Noriaki takes that hesitation as his opening to scramble away, at which point his companion comes back to his senses.  “Yare yare.”
         Kakyoin can’t think of what to say, and oddly for once it’s Jotaro that fills in the silence.
         “You’re like me,” he continues bluntly, and it’s Noriaki’s turn to stare. 
         “But you’re…”
         Jotaro smirks.  “One of the only good things Jiji left me.  Joestars are freakin’ tall.  And muscly.  And if I tell him you’re like me he’ll get it, too.  Now, are you going to sit still, or do I have to bring out my Stand?”
         Noriaki shivers a little.  For a threat, that sounded strangely intimate, especially in Jotaro’s rumble of a voice.

         “I don’t smoke much,” he tells her, and she eyes him with a questioning look.  “I don’t,” he repeats, familiar irritation quickly rising to the surface.
         “Then why is there a pack of cigarettes in your jacket?” she asks.
         He thinks about that one for a long moment.  “It’s nice to know it’s there but I don’t need it,” he eventually answers, and it’s characteristic.  The fact that there’s only two missing is also a good sign, so she decides to believe him for now.

           Getting everyone off the streets is a little more difficult than expected, particularly when Sunnydale syndrome exists and nobody thinks anything’s wrong, ever.  Still, the cover of ‘gangs on PCP’ had worked for them this time.  Telling everyone that darkness demons were going to eat anybody outside after nightfall doesn’t work, but warning everybody of roving gangs seems to be doing the trick.  They’re all busy running around getting everyone off the streets, but there are a couple who just aren’t.  The most noticeable is an older man in a really flashy suit that doesn’t look like it should ever be worn in Sunnydale.  He looks like he’s trying to find something, but there shouldn’t be any draw for a guy like him in town.
           “Sir, you really—shouldn’t be here,” Buffy trails off as the businessman turns around and looks awfully familiar.  Older than he should be, but that really looks like—
           “I told them we should’ve taken that right miles ago,” the man jokes, which is when she knows this isn’t a hoax.  This is the real deal.
           Only Xander jokes so badly in the face of peril.
