Everyone knows that the Mad Dog of Shimano is hardly all bark and no bite. There are those who think he means to bite, every time; he just gets distracted. There are those, of course, who thought his reputation was a dog's shadow in firelight. He took great care in introducing them to the Demonfire Dagger.
His boys, who are the closest, know the truth. If he's all high and manic, you've got a 50/50 chance, and you can increase your odds of making it out relatively unscathed by taking responsibility and offering to make it right in a way that he'll trust you to follow through. If his voice goes low and deep, you're screwed, as he one hundred percent will follow through or die trying, and in most cases he means to inflict death.
When Shimano had been alive, he'd also follow every order like the obedient rabid dog he is. Might get a bit creative about the how, but he'd been so trusted by Shimano because he got the job done.
There's other indicators of things you should steer far clear of. Hurting people he cares about, for one. Tacky things, like pulling in civilians, especially women and children. Littering, that's a big one. The biggest on the list, separated out by just how bad of an idea it is, is messing with Kiryu-san. You only do that under orders, and if you get the hankering to up the ante, maybe run the idea by the Boss, just to be safe. They're probably the only people in Kamurocho that have memorized both the trademark outfit and the face and steer clear unless the Boss has a new stunt he really wants to try, like the zombie thing, shaking their heads even as they enjoy the action and occasionally taping Kiryu-san's fights against less sensible yakuza or civilians who should really know a legend when they see one.
