It’s not like Oz’s zen, and he doesn’t think it’s just limited to just Sunnydale survivors (Majima is an example). But it’s simplest to call it Sunnydale Zen, and it’s not like it’s the first terrible name that’s stuck.
It’s a simple enough definition, after all. Like the eye of a storm. There’s a certain amount of freeform floating calm about being in the middle of an apocalypse, or a burning building, or Shimano’s whims. There’s only so much you can fight forces of nature, so you do what you can one step at a time and don’t worry about the rest. Sure, you’ve gotta look at the big picture now and then, but honestly, you don’t have time to keep staring at the giant tidal wave when it’s coming right at you. And you can’t keep planning to deal with something perfectly because that’s not going to work. You’ve gotta adapt and go with the flow and do what you can to stay above water and breathe.
Maybe that’s, well, if not the only reason, at least part of why Majima kept ambushing his dragon. When you’re fighting, you don’t have time to worry about paperwork or the like, just the punch headed at your face. There’s something calming about that, that you can’t fix everything but you can fix the broken window in front of your face. Maybe he worries too much. Maybe, like Majima, he should get in fights more often. It probably wouldn’t even be too hard.
It’s not that meme with the dog in the room on fire. It’s not a passive thing where you don’t do anything to make things better. It’s just that you have to focus on one thing at a time, which is so much easier.
