madimpossibledreamer: Zhuge Liang concentrating and looking thoughtful. (red cliff)
I was hoping not to have to bring this up; didn't want to sound like I'm fishing for sympathy or anything, but given that it seems that it's going to probably continue to affect my writing, I feel like my readers should know.  I'm unfortunately sick.  I had a cold or something during the middle to end of January which set me back, not only in writing but in everything else, and I thought I got better, but apparently not.  The Covid test the first time around was negative, and I haven't taken a second one.  I'll try to continue to have a chapter out each week for Shadowed Suspicion but everything else might be vastly delayed.  I hope that everyone else is doing well and that I'll get better soon!

They try to suppress the news; Jack’ll give them that.  They all try their little hearts out too, even the psycho clown, which was a great effort on their part, and the least Atlas can do is appreciate it.
They’re all worried.  Of course they are.  Made of junk like that rather than steel, there’s only one place this Iron Man could have come from.  That, and his actions made matters pretty clear.  Sector Security abusing their privileges were quickly targeted.  The people of the Satellite were protected, even from each other.  To many, that was merely more proof of the depravity of Satellite citizens.  To some, it spoke of something different entirely—he was a symbol of hope, a veneer of civilization.  He was their hero.
         But to Jack—
To Jack, this was just fulfillment of an old promise.
He had barely managed to contain his excitement, when he saw the pictures.  He couldn’t let the Iron Man’s identity slip, not even when it was so obvious.  After all, who else had the technical know-how and hacking skills?  Who else was stubborn as he was gentle, and still believed in the people of the Satellite, when Jack couldn’t find it in himself to believe in anyone?
         Well.  That was a lie.
But as a rule, Jack Atlas lied.  He was paid to be a liar on national television.  The people loved the constructed identity that was Jack Atlas.  He had to pretend that Jack-from-the-Satellite was dead—even further, had never existed.
Goodwin knew.  The clown knew.  A few from the Satellite knew.  It wasn’t in either Goodwin or the clown’s best interests to tell anyone, and the Satellite citizens couldn’t talk—who would believe them?  And anyway, the fans would likely tear apart anyone besmirching their beloved Atlas-sama.  It’s not like they knew anyone to tell, anyway, unlike Jack, who (restricted only by Goodwin and even then maybe not by much) was the darling of the media.
The point is, he should trust Goodwin.  The man had done so much to raise him from rags to riches.
Fortunately, Jack knows better, and suspects that Goodwin does, too.  The man, like so many others, was motivated by self-interest, but at least he was good enough to come out and say so.  Oh, he also gave good lip service to doing things ‘for the greater good of the world’, and maybe he even believed that, but a large part of it was selfish too.
With Iron Man, Jack could only trust that Goodwin would do what was in his own interest, not Yusei’s.  So it was Jack’s own little secret.
I told you you weren’t motivated enough.  Now you are.  You’re welcome, you selfless idiot.  You’re a dragon now, and it’s magnificent.  He smirks as he stares out his window into the lights of the city.

Crow is getting a little concerned.  So he marches in one day when he knows Jack’s out.  Yusei is, predictably, tinkering with his Duel Runner.  If the guy ever found himself with nothing to do with his hands, well.  Yusei wouldn’t deal with it well, would he?  For all that he’s patient, sitting still is hard for the guy.
“What did you do to Jack?” he asks with no preamble.
As usual when absorbed in something, Yusei doesn’t hear a word.  So Crow steals the wrench out of Yusei’s hand.
That earns several blinks of blue eyes, as if the wrench has suddenly become sentient and leaped away on its own.  Then slowly, with the same amount of surprise, Yusei glances up to see Hogan.  “Oh, hey, Crow.  Can I help you with something?”
He slowly gets up, wincing a little (he’s probably been kneeling in the same exact position for far too long and has gotten stiff) and begins to stretch methodically, like he’s some kind of robot.
“What did you do to Jack?” he repeats, determined to get an answer.
A strange look passes over Yusei’s face, one that Crow can’t read, but it’s too fleeting to study in detail.  “What do you mean?”
“He’s sitting around!”  On reflection, none of them deal well with having nothing to do.  “He’ll just patiently get you whatever you need when you’re working on Yusei Go, which you always are, and he’s being nice, and it’s making me paranoid!” At the end of the rant, he’s practically shouting.
It earns a bit of a smile, which is not the response he’d been looking for.  He needs to know…
“I have a lot to make up for, and Jack Atlas isn’t the type to owe anyone anything.  If it takes me the next lifetime to pay it back, I will,” an accented voice answers from right behind him, and if he were taller Crow’s head would be through the upper floor by now from how high he jumped.
At least Jack sounds maliciously amused at this, so his entire world hasn’t fallen apart just yet.
“If it makes you feel better, yes, I used mostly your money, since you earn more than I do,” Jack continues with a smirk, then turns to Yusei.  “I found that engine part you were talking about?  I wrote down the number.  I don’t know if it’s in good condition, though.”
Yusei rushes over and takes the proferred part in eager hands.  “It looks pretty good, but we’ll really find out once I test this bad boy.  Thanks, Jack.”
“You really should eat.  I got food, too.”  The blond looks both pleased and annoyed.  It’s a common enough expression.
Yusei waves a dismissive hand.  “Drag me to the kitchen if I haven’t eaten by two.”  He’s already almost forgotten about the two of them.
“I will follow through,” Jack warns.  It’s weird and domestic and Crow feels like he’s missed about five steps somewhere along the way.

Well, that was...really, really difficult, actually, and mainly involved using my phone to flip between different dragon pictures as well as ones of Yusei, but I think I got it looking fairly good.  And recognizable, which is amazing.  (I'm working on copying it so I can put it on my wall, complete with gold sharpie and color.  Wish me luck.)
This goes along with the Signer Dragons series (maybe obvious, just saiyan.)
When researching, I saw a couple Yusei-as-a-dragon pics, but they all had him as Stardust.  I wanted to offer a different take on it.
No idea why Yusei is smiling.  It's not actually all that common in the show, but it just felt like it fit, here.

“You’re an idiot, Yusei.  You’re not alone, ya know,” Jack says, and he feels a smile coming to his face inadvertently.  He hears the words from Martha, but it’s easy enough to ignore, considering how long he’s been hearing it.  From Jack, on the other hand…
“Maybe next time we can ask them if we could tag team duel,” Yusei comments, earning a chuckle from the other side.
The pain of having to face an old friend, again, who remains just as crazy as before, if not worse, eases a little more.  Hearing from Jack at all gives him hope.  Hope that the Dark Signers were likely trying to take away.  Jack hadn’t just abandoned him, not again.
“I wanted to catch up with Kalin, but unfortunately Mina had to be the voice of reason and point out there wasn’t much I could do about it without a Duel Runner or a deck.”  Jack really does look sorry about it, the fact that he couldn’t get revenge for a friend, and it’s almost as if he’d never left.  Almost as if there’d never been a rift between them.
“Are you still, you know.  Recovering?” Yusei asks, and Jack glares.
It’s not very successful.  “Oh, like you’re going to stay safely indoors until you’re better.”  Jack’s sarcasm is slightly painful.  And it’s not like he doesn’t have a point.
“Well.  Maybe we can both try taking it as easy as we can when the world’s ending,” Yusei suggests quietly.  It’s the only thing he can really come up with.
Jack nods.  “Don’t die before I can beat you and win my title back.  I’d be very upset.”  He pauses, then tentatively reaches a fist out toward the screen.
Yusei reaches out likewise, touching his side of the screen.  “I’ll remember that.”  And then Jack gives a hesitant smile.
Maybe they’re both healing, but it won’t hurt to do that together.  Maybe they can support each other, just like they used to.  The fate of the world’s at stake, after all.  They can’t afford to bring any less than their best game.

One by one, they fell away.  Kalin, lost to madness.  Crow, running off on his own.  Jack, leaving just enough behind to cut deep.
Yusei’s the last one.  Which means he has to be the one.  He has to be strong.  He has to do everything on his own.  There’s no one to be his backup, no one to watch his back and make sure he’s okay.  He’s the one who has to take care of everyone, because even if they have cards, none of the others are true duelists.  The others can try to help out, but they’re not fighters.  Not like he is.
There’s so much only he can do, and he’s not about to let his friends down.  So what if he doesn’t eat, drink, sleep.  He has to fix up anything that needs fixing.  He needs to work on the Duel Runner, because that’s their hope.
Though maybe that’s a lie.  Maybe it’s just…the instrument of his own revenge and dark desires.  When he’s generally sleep-deprived, though?  It’s easy to lie to himself.
So he loves his friends.  Trusts them with most things, but when push comes to shove he’ll deal with it himself, where they won’t be in harm’s way.

Word Count: 575
Rating: teen

The Satellite doesn’t give many opportunities for flying.  The closest he gets is taking his Duel Runner soaring through the tunnels, and it’s an amazing feeling.
He acts as a protector, a beacon of hope.  People talk about how different he is, but it’s hard to realize exactly how different.  It’s not like there’s a manual for this or anything.
His treasures are his friends.  And his Duel Runner.  And his deck.  He’ll guard those with his life.  Mostly everything else is unimportant, or relatively so.
He’s patient.  Jack’s not.  Jack’s different, like he is, but instead this urge to fly makes him restless, always looking for something new, always getting sick of the old.
When the Stardust Dragon is gone, he feels like a piece of himself is missing, and Jack doesn’t even use it.  He’d be able to feel it, somehow.  Maybe Jack doesn’t feel he’s earned it.
It’s honestly difficult to say what he’s most angry about.  Jack managed to take his treasures.  He didn’t take every card; didn’t take more than himself away—it’s Kiryu that did that—but it’s still such pain he doesn’t know where to begin.  There’s a fire burning inside.  It hurts.  He doesn’t want to feel like this, doesn’t want the smouldering anger, but it’s there.  Even when there’s still some left, it feels incomplete.  (He’s not going to say that to his friends, though; is even more angry that he has to try to keep this feeling from them.  It’s Jack’s fault.)
Relying too much on one card?  Jack, you may just have a point, and not just about dueling.
He tries his best to keep his friends from seeing the fire, because it burns him sometimes, and it scares him, and what would it do to them?  He doesn’t want to know, doesn’t want to see the hurt in their eyes any more than the fear.  Jack’s the one who hurt them.  They can’t hurt each other, not now.  Not when each other is all they have.
They do figure out when he’s touchy, when they should leave him alone with his thoughts.  Only Rally breaks through every single time.  Which is usually why they send the kid out there when he’s at his worst.
And he’s not sure whether it’s more terrifying, that even as he wishes Jack harm, envisions the fire burning through the blond’s ego and leaving nothing but an ashen wasteland behind, the feeling like he’s still one of them, still a friend, still important, is just as strong.  Just as true.
The others are worried about the plan.  Not just Nervin.  But he needs this.  Just as much as he needs his friends, needed to build the Satellite hope.
And they duel again, and he gets the mark on his arm, and he feels like he’s flying.
His teeth are a little sharper, but then, he rarely shows them, so it’s not like anyone notices.
He’s not really conscious for the big revelation, though.  The point when they figure out he’s not just your average human.  The power had always been there, inside, waiting to be unleashed.  The electroshock doesn’t bring out the mark on his arm, but it does bring out a different kind of change.
He changes into a dragon.  It’s not unexpected—for Goodwin, anyway—but the damage from the size change freaks out the guys at the Facility.  Which probably explains their treatment even more.
madimpossibledreamer: Jiraiya|Yosuke jumping and using a throwing star (jiraiya|yosuke)
Pretty sure a part of Yosuke truly identifies with Kanji's Shadow (someone, anyone, please accept me).  He hits on girls/is occasionally gross just because he wants someone, anyone, to pay attention.  So it's a headcanon that in the universes where he is bisexual...he's just as obnoxious about asking guys out, too (even ones he barely knows).  ...Aaaand has the same amount of humor/lack of investment in the answer (as with Yukiko), because he's always had the same answer.
