Yugioh 5D's Signer Dragons
Chapter Summary: Jack's the first to fly.  Also, being a bystander is not in Jack's blood.

Word Count: 1000
Rating: teen, could be read as ship! or friend!ship, random 3rd person pov shift (from sorta Yusei's pov to sorta Jack's pov)

“YUSEI!” Jack screams, and Yusei feels it, at least.  Jack actually cares.  It’d make for a touching reunion if he wasn’t about to be crushed by some giant monster.
And then Jack jumps, and Mina screams, except he’s skidding out and not quite sure what’s going on.  Not that he can see through the pain in the first place.
The others see Jack disappear and the dragon take his place.  They see him attempt to shield his friend, wings flaring out in defiance as the dragon roars.
He’s limp on the ground, and his world is a fiery agony.  It hurts to breathe, and even the thought of movement brings to mind even more pain.  Make it stop make it stop please anything make it stop
There’s something different, something calming.  He thinks it’s coming from the pain in his arm, but he’s not sure.  If you want, let me take some of the pain.  It’s what I deserve, after all, after everything I’ve done.  I made a mistake once, Yusei.  I want to make it up to you.  I want to deserve your friendship again.  I want to see you smile again.  We’re all in this together.  So stop being stubborn and share this burden, you idiot.  His brain’s not really processing the words, but it’s enough to get that grimace into a slight smile for a few seconds, and then the pain really does ease, just a little.
He’s too out of it to notice Crow coming down the incline and stopping beside them.  Nor him saying uncertainly, “Jack?”
“After everything you just saw, me being a dragon is the most unbelievable.”  That sarcastic voice is definitely familiar.  And strained.
“We need to get him to Martha’s,” Crow insists, and the great dragon nods wearily.
The claws curl protectively around his friend, a shield from the world, but Jack is realistic.  He knows his strength is fading, and the second he turns human he’s probably going to lose consciousness.  The last thing he needs to do is crash to Earth holding an already injured Yusei.  He’d give his friend to Mina, but he’s fairly sure the woman hates Yusei, and he doesn’t trust Goodwin.  Crow may take unnecessary risks, but not with Yusei.
He unfurls his claws.  “Get going, then.”
Crow blinks angrily at him (you’re a dragon, you take him, despite the fact that he’d argue fiercely if Jack even suggested such a thing) but doesn’t argue, and soon they’re out of sight.
“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” he calls to Mina, “…just as soon as I make sure my friend’s all right.  Go and yell at the mechanics if they’re being too slow or cutting corners—this is the end of the world, after all.  We can’t afford shoddy work.”
She’s reluctant, but there’s an advantage to this new form.  How exactly does anyone plan on arguing with a dragon?  Eventually, the helicopter peels off in the direction of the mainland.
“I’d carry the Duel Runner, but I’m not feeling my best at the moment.  I’ll be your backup.”
There’s a few half-hearted complaints, but it turns out none of them feels like arguing with a dragon, either, so after a little while they start off.
It’s a little monotonous flying overhead, and with a start Jack realizes he’s stopped thinking and is at risk from falling out of the sky.  He’s fallen behind a little, but if he flies just a little bit faster, he’ll catch up again.
And just in time, too.  He sees one of the gangs—the gangs that would never have dared to set foot in the Satellite in the time of the Enforcers.  They want the Duel Runner.
He swoops down, predator’s toothy grin across his face.  This is fun enough, it restores just a bit of his lagging energy.  “Is there really someone in the Satellite stupid enough to bother my friends?”
“Don’t worry about it!  That’s just a hologram!” one of the more leader-like elements of the mob yells.
Jack smiles sweetly.  Flies over and gently lifts the speaker using his claws, well.  Fairly gently.  He’s not going to be too nice; he’s not Yusei.  “Oh, yeah, just a hologram.  Nothing to worry about.  And I suppose the fire I could breathe on you won’t hurt a bit.”
(Honestly, he has no idea whether he breathes fire, but a little posturing never hurt anyone who mattered.)
He flies higher, dangling the loudmouth precariously, looking as innocent as possible.  It’s enough to make the idiot start shrieking, and the others take off running.  He carefully sets the idiot down, who promptly faints.
And Jack shivers and fights the urge to follow suit.
“Thanks, Jack,” Tank says, a little tentatively, but it only makes sense, given their history and all.
“Believe me, it was my pleasure.”  To his displeasure, his voice is a little quiet.  He really is starting to lag.  “But let’s hurry it up, shall we?”
The second time, he’s reduced to swooping in and growling like he’s some animal.  An unintelligent beast.  It’s infuriating, but it’s easy enough to show anger.  The wrath of the dragon.
They want to hurt his friends.  Which he had.  And to be honest, that’s one thing he can’t forgive himself, let alone anyone else, for.  And the humiliation of acting like just a beast?  No wonder they run from him in fear.
The smallest one says something to him, but he can’t quite understand.  He just rumbles as reassuringly as he can.
At least that makes them hurry it up.
When they get close, he flies faster.  Safety.
Except he’s falling, without permission, and crashing into the Earth like a giant earthquake.  He doesn’t see everyone running out to see what’s going on, and more by luck than by control he misses squishing his friends.
He’s losing his connection to the dragon, shrinking to the normal size before everyone’s astonished gazes, and with that change comes dark oblivion.
