Chapter Summary:
Luna and Leo are curious about their mysterious savior...
Word Count: 885
Rating: teen
Notes: Not sure about exact timing of this, but it might be somewhere within the Fortune Cup.

“So, you know Jack!” Leo says, bouncing.
Yusei makes a good older brother, Luna realizes with a blush.  He’s patient; never uses ‘because I say so’ as an excuse.  He’ll listen to them and give them a rational explanation that they understand.  He never treats them like they’re just kids.  But then, maybe he has brothers and sisters and a family back in the Satellite.  Maybe he even has a girlfriend.  There’s just so much about him that they don’t know.
She frowns at that thought and throws a pillow at Leo.  A gloved hand catches it instead and a head shakes slightly, and that hurts worse.  “Don’t you see he doesn’t want to talk about that?” she hisses at her idiot of a twin.
The duelist chuckles slightly, but it’s less upbeat than the other times.  “Nah, it’s okay,” he reassures them, but soon falls silent again.  “…I don’t know where to start,” he says at last, “…and it’s partially Jack’s story, so I can’t tell you that.  You could ask him, but I doubt he’d tell you either.  He may love the cameras, but he’s really a pretty secretive person.”
Leo’s pouting now, which earns a smile and his hair being ruffled.
“I’ll tell you what I can.”  Yusei pauses again, staring at his hands.  He almost looks upset, and Luna’s about to yell at her brother again, but a voice interrupts her, and it’s as calm and patient as ever.  If he really is upset, he’s good at hiding it.  “I wasn’t actually born in the Satellite.  Like you, I was born in the Tops.”
“I told you he was a superhero!” Leo screams, bouncing intensifying.  And for Leo, it’s good.  His two favorite duelists know each other.  Leo’s managed, somehow, to miss the less-than-friends glare at the Fortune Cup, but then, her brother’s good at that.  Yusei looks confused.  “And he discovered something bad about some senator or something who turns out to actually be a supervillain, and because the bad guy couldn’t beat him outright he decided to get him exiled…”
Yusei holds up his gloved hands, looking amused now.  Luna’s wondered why he’s always wearing them.  His hands aren’t actually disfigured—she’d checked.  It’s just…a Yusei thing.  “Woah, woah, slow down.”  He’s smiling, still.  He doesn’t smile as much with the others.  Luna wants to pretend to herself it’s because of her, but she knows he sees them as kids, and he just…likes kids.  Though if all the complicated stuff going on is any real indication of how the world of adults is, maybe he just prefers dealing with them, and maybe Leo’s right and they are lucky their parents are gone all the time.  “Who’s telling this story?”
Leo manages a sheepish smile and settles down a little.  “Sorry.  So…were you and Jack childhood friends, then?”
Yusei nods.  “That’s right.”  He sighs.  “We were the best of friends, but Jack…did some things I thought I could never forgive him for.”
“But you forgave him because you’re friends,” Luna says simply, reading the situation, and the turbo duelist looks vaguely surprised when he glances at her.  Then he nods, firmly.
“I wish it was as easy to get him to understand that,” he agrees, a hint of frustration in the tone.  “But I don’t think he’s forgiven himself yet, so he thinks I shouldn’t, either.”
Leo, meanwhile, looks torn between excitement that he’s finally hearing a little about their mystery savior duelist and sheer and utter meltdown that his hero might not be perfect.
“I don’t know how exactly it worked, but I ended up in the Satellite because I’m an orphan, now.”  There are things the story is missing.  Time scale, for one.  And he doesn’t look like a man who’s lost everything.  Was he young enough to not realize how awful the transition must be?  How did someone so nice survive the Satellite and not become a jerk or worse?
She worries at her lip.  She doesn’t want to ask those questions.  The man glances at her and nods.  “The Satellite’s not the worst,” he explains, looking them both in the eye, and Leo’s eyes grow big.  “Neo Domino’s cleaner.  There’s more crime, but between Sector Security and a group that took out the duel gangs a couple years ago, it’s a lot less than you’d think.  It’s mostly just people trying to survive.  Some people are cruel and willing to do anything to get ahead, but a lot of people realize that it’s only by working together as a community that we can have hope.  And,” he finishes, eyes twinkling, “…anywhere can be a great place, so long as you have friends.”
“Yeah!” Leo yells, fist pumping the air, and Luna’s caught between awe at the number of words Yusei has said today and rolling her eyes at her brother’s antics.
“And now I think it’s time for you two to go to bed.”
Leo whines, but Luna just settles in, staring at the wall.  There’s a lot to think about.
There’s a light touch on her shoulder.  “You okay?”
“Yeah.”  She smiles, and Yusei nods.  He understands.  That’s part of what makes him such a great guy.
She falls asleep to the sound of Yusei trying to convince her twin that it really is bedtime.
