Yusei is still a little wobbly when walking around on his own, but he’s determined that the work of the doctor won’t go to waste.  It’s not easy to get access to things like actual hospital-type care in the Satellite.
He puts a hand against the wall to steady himself, and then notices something in the room he’s passing.
A very familiar looking head of blonde hair, barely peeking out from under covers.  “…Jack?”
               What’s he doing here?
He approaches cautiously, wanting the friendship Jack had so casually discarded, unsure as how he stands with the other.
A purple eye peeks open, squinting at him in the darkness.  “I can feel your indecision a mile away, Yusei.  It’s enough to wake a man up.”
“Sorry.”  He’d stand, but his legs are getting a bit weak so he carefully moves some things from one of the chairs and sits down.
Jack growls.  Maybe he’s hoping for more of a fight, but Yusei doesn’t feel up for anything.  Maybe he should’ve just ignored his curiosity.
“What the hell happened while I was gone?  You even deserve that title you so casually took?  Because a King isn’t meek.  You’re acting more like a jester.”  He fights to sit, and Yusei notes with shock that he seems, well.  If not as hurt as he is, still sore and sleepy and that might be a huge bruise trailing over the shoulder and onto the back.
“You’re right.”  That ticks Jack off even more, but it’s not like he’s doing it on purpose.
It’s not like he talks about his feelings much.  Prefers to let his actions speak for him.  But with the light off and the blond glaring at him, he might as well.  “That thing was huge, and nothing I could do could stop it.  It’s not like dueling anything human, Jack.”
His…rival?  Friend?...sighs and opens the other eye, throwing one hand over his forehead dramatically.  “I’m well aware, thank you.  I guess you were a little too unconscious to notice, though.”  A smirk, that suits him more than this look of vulnerability.  “I took the full brunt of the attack.  Admittedly, I was a dragon, so I ended up better off than you.”
               Yusei blinks.  “What.”
“I’m thinking it’s one of those things Goodwin just decided we didn’t need to know.  It’s hard to tell, considering I’ve never heard of Signers before, but I believe one of the lovely gifts is the ability to turn into a dragon.  Here, follow me and I’ll show you.”
“I—okay.”  Surely the doctor would have noticed brain damage?
At least Jack is moving a little faster than he is.  So he’s better off, physically, even if he might not be mentally.
They get a little ways from the house, and Yusei’s starting to feel uncomfortable.  “Jack…?”
“You’re right.  This is as good a place as any.  Back off a little, Yusei.”
He does, looking even more worried.  There’s a few moments, and nothing happens.  “Jack, are you…?”
“I’m fine.”  Anger echoes through the mark on his arm.  And uncertainty.  Jack’s worried that he’s not going to be able to repeat whatever he—  “Stop that!”
And suddenly, there’s a dragon in front of him.  Scales and all.  “Woah.”  He reaches out and touches, and no, it’s no hologram.  This is…amazing.
“Do you mind?  I’m still a little sore.”  And, right, it’s still Jack underneath it all.
He takes back his hand, wishing suddenly that he was wearing gloves so this’d be a little less awkward.  “Sorry.  So…you’re probably the reason I’m not dead.  Thanks.”
“What’re friends for?”  That toothy dragon smile is definitely pure Jack.  “It’s certainly entertaining.  If you thought that the duel gangs ran from us when we were the Enforcers, they’re even less likely to stick around when you’re a dragon.”
He can’t muster a laugh, but does chuckle weakly, which, judging by the widening purple eyes, is unexpected.  His mind turns to the task at hand.  “Do you think that this could help us against the darkness?”  And against those creepy giant monsters, he thinks, but doesn’t want to put it into words.
Meeting his honesty from earlier.  It’s a surprise, but it’s nice to know Jack can get serious about something besides dueling.  “I’m not sure.  We can’t duel as dragons, and I have a feeling that that’s important somehow.  But on the other hand, I was able to survive a direct attack like this, so even if we lose, it might not be the end of the world.  It might help, but I don’t think it’ll win the war for us, if that’s what you’re thinking.”
Yusei sighs.  “Of course.  Why would it be that easy?”
“Come on, who hates a challenge?  Besides losers, that is.”  A wing tentatively touches his back, and it feels a little weird.  But he’s starting to get tired, so he doesn’t care too much.
He sits down.  Standing is still harder than he’d like.  “There’s still such a thing as getting more than you bargained for, you know.”  He yawns.  “Do you think I can…do it too?”
“It’ll be like old times,” Jack promises, amusement and destruction, and the warmth of the scales at his back and the promise of kicking butt with friends again lulls him off to sleep.

Omake

(He’s tired enough he misses Jack falling asleep too, and Martha coming out to yell at the pair of them for still being weak and napping outside where they could catch a cold.)
