Chapter Summary: Crow continues to be concerned.
Word Count: 660
Rating: teen
Notes: This is, technically, genfic, but there's also hinted Jack/Yusei. Read with the slash goggles if you want, but they're not required for reading.
“We didn’t have the money! You can’t let your appetites rule your life, Jack!” Crow’s angry, because no matter how many times he says the words, they never sink in. Maybe he needs to take a knife and carve them into the blond’s stupid brain.
“I wanted to share.” It’s quiet and angry, so quiet that Crow almost doesn’t hear it, and Jack’s naturally loud so ‘quiet’ is just as startling and worrying as every other stupid thing Jack’s been doing since he came back.
“…Excuse me?” He can’t have heard what he just heard…can he?
“Well, you’re all used to eating garbage,” he says with a huff, face red with embarrassment or anger or both, clenching his fists. “That’s one of the things that was so much better in Neo Domino. I just wanted to treat everyone.” And then, as if it’s all Crow’s fault, suddenly there’s an accusing finger in his face. “Don’t think I’ll make a habit of this, so you better enjoy it while you can!”
“I’m glad my lessons about sharing sunk in, even if it did take years,” Martha adds mildly from behind them, smiling softly, and Yusei’s strength suddenly makes sense.
It’s exactly like Martha’s. They have the habit of making friends wherever they go, and with just a few words can dominate a room. But they’re also usually quiet, so much so that they can appear out of nowhere, and there’s no need to posture or use their authority if it’s unneeded. They’re focused.
Jack splutters, and Martha nods toward the plates in the kitchen. “You can set up.”
“I’m looking forward to this,” Yusei takes half the stack of plates. “But Crow’s right, we can’t afford to splurge like this all the time.”
“Like I planned to!” With the angry way Jack grabs the rest, following with a furious predatory stride, Crow’s surprised that he doesn’t break them all.
“You were.” Yusei’s certainty is part of the power of his words. “Spoiling us all the time isn’t the way to pay us back, though.”
And then they’re too far away to hear. Martha looks after them fondly.
“Agh! What’s up with them!” Crow yells, throwing his hands in the air, and feels himself begin to blush when he feels Martha’s eyes on him.
When she speaks, it’s to reassure him, and he doesn’t know why he expected anything else. “I know my boys. Jack may be brash and occasionally selfish, but he’s certainly capable of being incredibly sweet, and he’s genuine about trying to make amends. Besides, if there was something wrong, do you think Yusei at least would hesitate to tell you?”
“Yes,” he states without hesitation. “Yusei might’ve been able to work as a group, but it’s been a long time since those days. He’s turned into a one-man crusader since.”
And a painful fist slams into his shoulder. Yusei still doesn’t know his own strength. The friendly chuckle, accompanied by that rare smile, says that it’s meant as a friend thing. “Point taken, thanks. Between you and Jack, I’m getting that I’m not allowed to try to solve anything but mechanical problems on my own anymore. That I have people I can rely on. Which, let’s be honest, is a relief.”
“Got that right,” Jack replies fiercely, and then they begin grabbing glasses and utensils. The blond’s gone again, quicker than Yusei, and that’s weird. He’d already grabbed everything he’d needed to grab, so why…?
“There’s nothing to worry about now, Crow. Believe me, this is the closest thing to an apology you’re going to get from him, which is still pretty incredible.” Ah, he’d wanted to say his piece without Jack in the room. He leaves after a convincing nod, slight concern for Crow in his blue eyes.
And yet…
That doesn’t make the headache go away, or force Crow to stop worrying. But he tries to smile and set that aside to think about for later.
