Dream: Buffy, Xander, etc were all half-human. Xander and Willow were homeless and sleeping in the park. Ethan had this camera that brainwashed you when he took a picture of you, but the recharge was super long. He went after Buffy first because she was the strongest fighter. (I don’t think they’d met before that point. Buffy was the Social Queen of the local half-human organization but Xander and Willow were just trying to stay off the grid.) Xander was trying to explain all this to Tara, who was the last one. Xander’s powers had nothing to do with fighting but he does have a partial resistance to the camera thing, so he was able to warn Tara even though he was also not quite there when it came to trying to explain and was trying to strangle her now and then during the middle. (Fortunately, she learned after the first time and backed up to a safe distance where she could easily slip out if she needed to do so.)

madimpossibledreamer: Jiraiya|Yosuke jumping and using a throwing star (Default)

I had this dream a couple weeks back.

Giles was an incarnation of the Doctor (no idea which incarnation, but probably an AU which means he could have been any of them).  Xander and Willow were his companions.  Not sure about Xander's origin; Willow had things in common with Nyssa.

The first episode was a place where they landed, the forest looked idyllic, and then they ended up getting chased away from the TARDIS by dinosaurs or something.  The native people managed to find and rescue them but their only strategy is running away really.  They will not open their gates and allow themselves to potentially be wiped out in order to let their guests out on a suicide mission or aid them in attempting to retrieve the TARDIS.  They expect their guests to integrate into the city.

They each try different approaches in preparation for an upcoming festival.  The Doctor tries to make friends with everyone and get them to reveal something without meaning to, as well as getting himself on the planning committee for one of the events.  Willow focuses on absorbing all the knowledge she possibly can from both the databases (not a lot, as while it’s obvious these were used before and that a bigger civilization used to be present before and these are a people in decline) and the libraries.  Xander, well.  The ‘haha’ way to put it would be that he does drugs, but that’s not the full story.

There’s a native plant the Doctor has never heard of that unlocks brief precognition, not too useful over the long-term but is pretty useful in a fight and is the only reason their occasional hunting parties to find survivors or other resources haven’t been slaughtered or tracked down yet.  (Hence why the Doctor and his friends are very skeptical about the whole ‘it’d be too dangerous to let you leave—given how they’re barely hanging on, the Doctor suspects that it’s an excuse to try to keep them as an extra resource.)  Use is required to take part in the warrior’s contest, and the Doctor has been told (though isn’t sure if it’s the truth) that winning one of the contests can give the winner one wish.  Like being able to leave.  The Doctor isn’t fully on board with Xander’s plan but reluctantly goes along with it.  It’s a dangerous plan, he warns.

“Sure, but I can’t just sit around and do nothing.  Both you and Willow are working hard to make sure we can get out of here.  I’m not going to be the dead weight.”

Just in case, the Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver to monitor Xander’s condition every day; it’s not perfect but it’ll have to do, since the people insist the plant is perfectly harmless and would not allow their medical equipment to be ‘repurposed’ for such an ‘unnecessary worry’.  He does notice changes in Xander’s brain chemistry and cells but has no idea whether they’re dangerous or not.  (This will prove to be important later in the series/season, as they’re permanent and do not fade after access to the plant is no longer possible.  Though the Doctor takes a sample anyway.)

Sadly, I didn’t get to see the ending, so I don’t know how they managed to escape except that they did.

I also didn’t get to see much of the second episode, so I don’t know much except that Cordy was a big starring role and I get the feeling it might be a similar story to the great classic Star Trek TOS episode “Mark of Gideon” only with Cordy being a more active role.

Extras not in dream: This obviously means Ethan is the Master.  Which actually is pretty fitting.

It’s interesting that Buffy wasn’t with them, although I get the feeling this is probably only temporary.  When I think about how writing would go, I get the feeling she’s one of the bodyguards for a space futuristic Roman or Egyptian civilization run by some equivalent of Cleopatra or something.  (So she’d be from the equivalent of the Mummy movies Medjai, as would the rest of the Slayers, and for once their existence isn’t a tool or a pawn but a high honor the people aspire to send their daughters to, second in divinity only to the ruler herself.  Still dangerous, but as we’ve recently seen when you’re the people protecting the government from attacks from within as well as outside, there’s a certain amount of danger.)  The Doctor and companions go there, help out, and in thanks the leader offers the aid of one of her most trusted bodyguards.  “That’s not necessary; really, it’s not.  I wouldn’t think to deprive you of any of your people—” The Doctor begins protesting.

“Oh, but you may find a use for her sooner than you think.”  It’s at that point that the Doctor realizes her people have a limited ability to see into Time, like him, and she’s seen something he has not.  This of course ties into whatever the series arc is for that series/season, so he stops protesting and accepts.

delayed because me reading about more CW shenanigans + Joss jossing his own progressive cred, but we all knew that already.  and then I had to decide on outfits.
Also, I'm writing from his PoV but I don't like younger Xander as much.  This took probably about 3 hours to post because I really am not sure about this one.  I really like some of the dialogue and stuff, but as much as I usually like writing these characters, that's not 100% true in this case.  I like older 'having been forced to deal with his shit' Xander.  Maybe teenagers are less aware of themselves being jerks (or less able to stop themselves for being jerks).  Or maybe I've just been reading too much about Joss.  I hate saying this, but at least something will go wrong in the next installment so he'll have bigger issues than his own insecurities.  That being said, saying no to being a Dilgar is a correct decision.  Also, yes, Xander, I have actually heard and participated in a pocket rant, because I love my pockets and everyone should be able to have pockets if they want them.  Which is actually also kind of a metaphor as well as a real-world issue if you think about it.

...wait, huh, that actually makes a lot of sense.  Starting all the way back from that fateful Halloween episode. length warning.  lack of links warning, for those of you who care about such things (I definitely couldn't submit this essay in an academic setting)-either because I couldn't vet the links for accuracy or because some of this stuff I read a little while ago when I was trying to research for fic and can't find where I'd read it. i do have a couple links, but i'd honestly need a lot more.

Summary: Would you look at that, more stuff from 2012. This one is a follow-up to a Choose Your Own Adventure Halloween adventure I may or may not finish eventually where Xander ends up with Captain Xan in his head. This one I actually had some episode tags for how things changed through the series. There's more for this one-the starting one has Ethan and there is some legit dialogue from one particular episode but I'm not sure which one as I didn't label it at the time. Then there's What's My Line, Ted, Bad Eggs, and Innocence (part 1, since I'm breaking it up so it's not over 2000 words.)  This one fluctuates rapidly from actual fanfic to summary and slightly tweaked quotes.

It takes research, years of it, but due to his use of magic he’s not exactly entirely human, anymore, and it’s worth it.  He doesn’t let himself think for a second that Ethan had not followed him.  He’s scheming and biding his time, preparing for the next confrontation, just as Giles is doing.  He discovers that more than one dimension has become unstable, likely as a result of Ethan’s meddling.  He finds what appears to be a nexus after a good deal of searching.  A young woman named Buffy Summers.
The name is familiar.  It takes him a little while (and a memory recall spell) to discover that she was a Potential Slayer that had gone unnoticed by the Council.  Merrick had showed up and attempted to train her, but she’d been targeted by a wetworks team and Merrick had also died when he’d attempted to protect her.  Rupert had counted that as a loss; Merrick had been a friend, and it only proved that he couldn’t bear to condone such behavior.
Perhaps his father had been right.  Perhaps it would’ve been better if he had become a Watcher, rather than Ethan, to try to correct the corruption, fix it from within rather than letting it be torn apart entirely, but hindsight wouldn’t fix the situation.
Buffy (and who would do that to a child) is well-hidden.  Finding her involves beseeching a couple light goddesses he’s fairly sure are not on speaking terms with Ethan, so she’s protected for the moment.  She’s quote-unquote normal, placed in the insane asylum for being unable to tell the difference between her world and others.  It’s a gift, but no one she knows sees it that way.
The problem is convincing her of the truth.  The problem is keeping her safe once he’s gotten her out, because he’s fairly sure it’s the banality of her situation that keeps her protected.  So he keeps looking, finds a few lesser nexūs that he can get to join his cause.  To save the world.  His world had fallen, a divided front.  Ripper can’t save the world on his own.  He’s a loner, but he’s not willing to just let Ethan have his way, and if teamwork is what saves the vast multiverse then that’s what he’ll do.

Main Points:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Avengers Crossover AU (Self-Made Hero: The Infinity Mirror)
Summary: Rupert Giles and Ethan Rayne trade words over the ruin of a world.
Word Count: 360
Rating: Gen

Giles stands, lips braced in a dangerous snarl, amid the smoking ruins of his world.
There’s nothing left, really.  The Council and the Slayer line were the first to fall, victims to betrayal from within.  The only thing that’s kept him standing this long is the Shard of Stronnos, and even that has its limitations.  Rupert himself is beginning to feel the effects of a long, prolonged struggle.  All of the artifacts, gone, and used to wreck havoc.  The cities torn apart.  All semblance of government killed mercilessly, the remnants scattered, on the run, prey to any demons, entities, or servants of chaos they might happen to meet.  It is not a dead world, not yet, but it is a dying world, and that thought fills him with more pathos than knowing that his world is gone.
Ethan Rayne, former Watcher, smiles.  Even at his worst, Giles would never have believed it would come to this, yet here they are.  First Rayne had been considered loyal; then he had not been considered a threat.  Both grave mistakes that there was in all probability no coming back from.
“You know this is not the end, old friend,” Rayne taunts.
Giles raises a weary eyebrow and looks around at their surroundings.  “How is this not the end?”
“You think too small.”  He raises his hands and gestures at their surroundings.  “This is only one world in a universe of possibilities.”
Giles’ eyes widen in horror.  “You aren’t—”
But he doesn’t finish the words.  Not when he knows they’re untrue.  Rayne certainly would.  There’s a glimmer of insanity in his eyes, just the right amount to make him dangerous.
So instead, he closes his eyes and begins chanting.  Rayne recognizes what he’s doing and begins hurling objects at him with telekinesis, but the magic addiction is actually weakening Rayne slightly, and Giles uses the Shard, turning the matter into energy to fuel the spell.
And then he flings himself out into the multiverse, puts his faith in the Powers That Be or anything that might be listening and sympathetic, that even if he cannot save his own world, he can save others.
