I really like, like. If they’re going to have a character as a pervert, it’s absolutely fascinating to have it be someone like Kindaichi. Because, like. The one episode where the doctor serves as a nude model, he’s not like *drool* “but oh no how dare the woman make such a choice”, he’s just like “Yeah, that’s cool, she made that choice and I totally respect it, and not just because I appreciate the results.” Or the one live action one where the other old friend who loved being on the sports team but had to stop and still missed it and was like “Oh, you’re just disappointed because you wanted to see me in a skirt,” and he’s like, “...that’s not the only reason.” He might be a pervert but he has more respect for women than a lot of the guys I’ve had to deal with over the years, especially the ones that make the mistake of thinking I’m just like them. (I don’t know if that’s the case in the manga, given that I’ve only read a couple of volumes ages and ages ago, and they’ll switch some things around in the adaptations and some things will get worse and better. But I’m utterly pleasantly surprised that it stays the same over the different versions. 2022 is the most equality-themed of all of them, from what little I’ve seen, which is why I’m upset it didn’t get released in the States on DVD and is owned by the Mouse, but. /shrugs. Again, I can cope.)

        Xander contemplates this.  “Is it better or worse than G-man?” he asks, genuinely curious.
        He doesn’t, unfortunately, get his answer.  “Sometimes I genuinely wish I remained a chaos warlock.”  So I wouldn’t have to deal with annoying teenagers, is the unstated implication.
        Xander’s used enough to the hurt that he almost doesn’t notice it when he swallows it down.  None of it shows in his face, or his voice.  “Eh, but then, you’d have to deal with the yearly sacrifice and mayhem quotas.  And the dress code.”  He thinks about that some more, than shakes his head.  “Though that one might actually be more of a plus; I dunno.”

Buffy isn’t acknowledging that it was Kindaichi here, partly because of how it was different for her.  She also doesn’t remember Giles was breaking the spell.

From what I’m reading Halloween wasn’t really a Japanese thing until about 2000.  Kindaichi Case Files is roughly set around the time it was written.  In either case, the Halloween episode is set in 1997.
The bit about recognizing your hands more than anything else is from Jojo’s.
honestly this song title was kind of what inspired everything, after which I was like...yeah, writing Kindaichi could be a lot of fun. and here we are.
