Buffy the Vampire Slayer/The Case Files of Young Kindaichi
Summary: Kindaichi and Willow insist on a rescue.
Word Count: 625
Rating: Teen
“If you think I’m putting my neck out wasting time trying to save Mr. Giles, who can take care of himself, you’re crazy,” Cheisu-chan states flatly, utterly ignoring Wilo-chan’s fierce glare.
“From how he has been described, he is quite competent on his own,” Bufi-sama agrees, and Anjeru-san merely looks at them with sad, helpless eyes. Because he feels like he has to go—no matter how competent the person, the possibility of a sneak attack or something else unforeseen remains. Even the most competent of individuals can be vulnerable, or caught unawares. “And he ordered us to stay put, did he not?”
Casually, Kindaichi places his—Zandaru’s—hands behind his head. The trick here is to take the weight off. He likely won’t change Cheisu-chan’s mind, though the hint of worry in her voice betrays her. She might care after all, if only a little, but not enough to change her own actions now. And if he doesn’t make this more low-key, Bufi-sama and even Anjeru-san will probably keep second-guessing themselves and their own decisions, wondering if they’re horrible people. “I’m just terrible about following orders, you see. But it makes sense that you stay here—the bigger the group, the more likely we are to be caught by something hostile.”
He flashes the grin that usually gets people complaining about him being a reckless fool kid, all of which are actually true, and which would consequently take their minds off any guilt they might happen to feel. Sadly, it doesn’t work perfectly—Anjeru-san keeps giving him worried looks, and the only one it might work on is Wilo-chan, who tries to elbow him, pulling back last minute remembering that she’s a ghost and as such that would be completely ineffective, and she’s determined to go with him anyway.
True, it’d probably be safer to just let Wilo-chan go on her own. Most things probably can’t hurt spirits, but even if there’s something wrong, conversely there’s nothing she can do to help.
But—aha. “Do you happen to know if the Summers family happens to own a bicycle?” It’s not as fast as a car, but he assumes most people are not driving, and it’s certainly better than trying to run all the way there, particularly when creatures faster than humans might be around. When attempting to stay alive, speed is certainly a helpful thing.
Anjeru-san lights up and takes him and Wilo-chan to a garage, where she starts trying to practice floating quickly through the air, like an onryo, most likely to try to keep up. It’s not like she can sit behind him and hold on, after all. He does make note of the fact that the man is slightly secretive about how he learned the contents of Bufi-sama’s garage, leading to possible concerns about stalking, but that’s merely another fact to file away for later. It’s not as if he knows the full story, either. He’ll just have to find that out, later.
He does pause to take the bulkiest flashlight he can find and tuck it as securely as one can into his pants pocket. Flashlights, in his experience, are universally useful, particularly when they’re hefty enough to double as a weapon. Should he run into something that can’t be outrun or reasoned with, he can defend himself. Possibly. It’s better than having nothing, at least, and he can buy time for a better rescue.
“Good luck,” Anjeru-san wishes them, and then they’re off, Kindaichi pedaling as fast as he can. It’s hard to tell if the pangs in his gut are worry or hunger, but he can concern himself with the specifics later. In the name of his grandfather, he’s certainly going to see this case to the end.
