okay, the new doctor who was pretty good but i was yelling at the screen for a few solid minutes at the doctor being dumb--she was like 'hey, it's not here' and i was like 'it was a timed thing, you took a shortcut and arrived early, what the blank you're smart, you should be able to figure that out'
technically you get two because I occasionally react to episodes i watched that day
oh, and the first episode of vento aureo?  molta bene

imagine pet shops in the future
at first they put up huge signs saying NEVER FEED YOUR PET on the tribble cages
and kept getting horrible reviews from new 'owners' who aren't responsible and can't read
and eventually just gave up and put up giant signs saying 'Your tribble feeds on your love and hugs'
(I have weird thoughts at work tbh)

reboot!kirk could've been better served by writing him kinda like Dean Winchester, who's constantly pretending:
*He's not a huge nerd (I love the episode where they're on set and Dean's trying not to show off how much he knows about Hollywood)
*He doesn't respect his partners or care a whole lot about consent (spoiler alert: it's wrong)
*he just wants sex, isn't a huge romantic, and doesn't want a long-term relationship (mostly because he thinks it's impossible in current situation)
all the while not hiding at all
*his giant love for his Enterprise (aka Baby)

Uhura's one of the only ones that gets his fascination with old-time movies.  They watch old foreign movies together.
In deference to his handicap (because he only really reads old languages) they leave on the subtitles.  when the movie is Russian Chekov joins them.
madimpossibledreamer: Jiraiya|Yosuke jumping and using a throwing star (seven)
YOu know what else sT 2009 is missing??  Captain's logs. The Kelvinverse requires captain's logs asap.  I might get to the point where I write the fanfic where Acting Captain Jim is doing the captain's and personal logs because he knows they're going to want to know everything in the future.
(well, I slightly covered this in cambion!au)

My journey: I liked ST 2009.  I'd seen a little TOS before, but I was seeing it from the pop culture lens and hadn't appreciated it.  I figured there was more to Jim Kirk than we saw, and liked Tony Stark, too.  I saw Into Darkness and that really killed the urge to watch any more.
But then they had Wrath of Khan in theaters, and I had to go out anyway, and then I went, you know what, why not?
...And then I was hooked.
I rewatched ST:2009 and still enjoyed it, but not as much. And a large part of the enjoyment is probably just the fact
that I love time travel stories so much.
So then I started watching TOS, and I was surprised. The episodes were so much more thoughtful than I expected.
Kirk was so much more interesting and awesome of a character than I thought.
I'm pretty sure that's not what JJAbrams intended, though. "Mine is the only Star Trek" Excuse you, it's only the gateway to better and brighter things.  (which I guess is still Star Trek in a way...)

Scotty, you’re a moron.  Of course, you started a fight with Klingons in the original so it’s not like you’ve got much room to talk there.

(also of note: scotty has a nephew.)

Okay, that made me laugh, good job.

“what did I just say, scotty?” okay, the quippage + ‘keep focused’ is pretty good.

Wow, spock figured that out pretty quickly

(please stop sidelining bones thx)

Hey, the natural predator of the tribble!  That’s cool to see!

Okay, scotty, you’re clearly an idiot

Hey, kirk was in the language society, he should be slightly better than that.

RAND IS HERE OMG ALERT THE PRESSES

Yay, more bones!

“I didn’t do anything!” “I still blame you” yes good more bones :D

That’s probably where the one in into dumbness came from

Uhhhh shouldn’t you have mentioned the thing where they’re a great Klingon repellent?  (that was better as a rewrite tho.  I mean, not better than the original and I miss the ‘I am completely done with life’ scene, but better than the gary one because they didn’t properly set that up)

I’m not sure what I expected from strange Strigai from beyond the stars, but this James Kirk wasn’t it.
Apparently, they only speak our tongue through the use of a device, the Universal Translator, and they rely not on Jirgoi basmat to speak for them.  There is a dark-skinned female, possibly Jirgoi, but she has not joined us physically.  Either she is considered of less status or they are not willing to risk her.  Given the dangers of Barca, this shows they are more aware of our customs than they let on, which is a wise course of action.
I can’t classify this Kirk, though his Second, Spock with an unpronounceable Clan-name, may not even be Strigai!  He’s got some pointy ears like a hobgoblin, though.  And there’s another, Anter Julas, who may also not be Strigai.
Kirk, by his looks, is Marroi, pretty as a picture and born for command.  I expected somethin’ a little more exotic, to be honest.
As a Vindroi they’re keeping me on hand in case we can learn more about their biology.
adnm: Well, Kirk plays Barca better than any of us anticipated.  He plays pretty, airheaded, and naïve, but there’s a bite behind those fangs.  He lost his temper when Marroi Adeila Amanr questioned his allegiance to a Faction called Starfleet which apparently doesn’t even have Strigai as all of its leaders.  He showed his pretty little fangs (which do look like they could do some damage, and might, if he’s not Marroi like I first thought), locked us all up with some basmat we’ve never seen before and lectured us about the power of restraint.  Those who feel strong enough they don’t have to bare their fangs at every little thing, and he wasn’t going to make a show of force until they made it clear they weren’t going to take him seriously unless he did.  His basmat works somehow through emotion, which is how he read the situation and locked us all down.  Guess I got the ‘exotic’ I was expecting.
adnm: I’m being sent to infiltrate, and situation being as it is, I can’t refuse.

madimpossibledreamer: Zhuge Liang standing with his fan, looking peaceful. Army in background. (peace)

Is that admiral Kirk?

Haha, yep, it is.  Hey, I can totally see them being crazy pen pals in space.

Well, until scotty started tinkering.  He could make it work.

(this is before the 1st movie isn’t it?  …I remember seeing the beard in a music video…)

This is bones.  He’s not phased by a knife to the throat.

Also yes warlike andorians, good.

“I’m a doctor, not a botanist” you mean?

Hey, they want to survive, they got a biological imperative to fight back.

(I can hear Bones grumbling about fools who think they can control everything)

I like that she’s got more of a plot/character.  We’ll see if that keeps up.

Intelligence as you know it.  that’s different.

That was cool.  Also we’ll make a space adventurer of you yet dr mccoy.

madimpossibledreamer: Jiraiya|Yosuke jumping and using a throwing star (the universe is unimportant)

Huh, it’s cool seeing Kelvinverse Jim dealing with the events of Where No Man Has Gone Before although there aren’t that many differences (so far, it’s the color of Jim’s hair & eyes, Bones’ eyes, and Mitchell actually making a yellowshirt friend of theirs, Kelso, commit suicide.  Well, and the communicators & phasers’ appearance)

Okay, showing him the past.

Also it occurs to me that they cut out Dehner, who was kind of crucial.  Also, it’s marginalizing the role of women again.  I wonder how they’ll deal with this.

Jim’s eyes are briefly brown.  Odd.  (his hair’s inconsistent in color too.  That’s just bizarre.)

I refuse to believe kirk actually regularly cheated on exams.  Despite what gary is saying.

And spock comes in with a Vulcan nerve pinch as a deus ex machina. Great.  /sarcasm.

I like that it’s depicting a more thoughtful version, who’s less overconfident & shows vulnerability.  Some of the internal lines are new.  I think.

It leads to them playing chess, and Spock actually noticing something’s wrong & attempting to help, so that’s something.

Are the andorians part of the empire?

Well, he does have pointed ears

They’ve got better weapons than we do.

Stuff

He actually feels some feelings toward Spock

…the death-computer thingie isn’t working anymore.

I mean, noncon kiss, but it’s the way to keep herself alive in the world of backstab, so.

Well. Yeah.

Oh hey, we never saw Bones the Evil.

“I suggest you put down your rebellion, laddie.”

Well, they’re still weird friends.

Well, too late, we already injected him.

Oops we kinda disabled your ship before we got attacked

IDIC—wait, do the Vulcans actually have that at this point?

The delivery of that line, Captain’s Woman.  Just made me giggle.

And you don’t even know how to do it yourself, you jerk?

Yes but you’ll use the tools of the monster.

DESTROY IT

“No revolution can succeed using the same methods that failed in the previous one.”

Civilized, you say?  I don’t believe you.

That smile was pure shatner.  Gj.

I mean, a vulcan’s arm is inherently a weapon, but.

Now let’s see if it’s accurate in that kirk wins every game

And evil kirk continues to be jealous of himself.

Fighting in the red lights.

He recorded that.  nice.

I am *astounded* at how much hammy William Shatner managed to convey subtle character stuff with James T Kirk.
James T Kirk is:
*A professional, first and foremost (if you're off duty, feel free to goof off, and it's not an awful 'you're not allowed to talk' work environment, but if your actions/words are getting in the way of your job he WILL tell you off-
gently if it's unintentional or you didn't mean any harm by it, harshly if you're putting others in danger or hurting others or really SHOULD KNOW BETTER)
*An absolute nerd (I'm sorry, if you're geeking out about the Starfleet expert you're going to meet, you're a nerd
which by the way is awesome)
*A default flirt (with everything and everyone, seriously, you will not convince me he isn't flirting with the pilot
and the interrogators in Tomorrow is Yesterday)
*So...yeah, he's canon bisexual??  (But he's only had previous relationships with women)
*But...he's also a complete romantic.  (He prefers long relationships.  He remembers not only the names but
EVERYTHING about his exes.  And WHY doesn't he have a long term relationship?  No, you got it wrong, it's not that he doesn't want one.  He DOESN'T HAVE THE TIME.  Being a Captain takes a lot of time, and he doesn't want to neglect either his duties or the (lady?) in question [or the Enterprise, he's pretty much married to the Enterprise])
*Uses his charisma in the same way that females are usually written-his grin and flirting are a weapon or tool
to be used.  (It's AWESOME that this is being written as a trait for a guy because it shows that isn't a gender-specific trait and it's challenging gender norms.) (Also that's most of his flirting on the show.)
*A reader.  (Including Shakespeare, which, judging by the acting troupe's efforts in Conscience of a King, is kinda
uncommon.  People in the future DON'T KNOW SHAKESPEARE. Kirk is the weirdo who collects old Earth PAPERBOUND BOOKS and reads ancient classics like SHAKESPEARE wearing GLASSES when most people just get their eyes fixed and it's beautiful.)
*Not a jerk.  (Seriously, if you need any more proof of this, look at EVERY SINGLE TIME he apologizes to his crew for yelling at them.  They all look at him fondly like 'what, you thought we were upset, you thought we took you seriously?  It's FINE captain.'
*Supportive. (For each and every member of his crew. You're in trouble, you need to speak to your boss about
something, GO AHEAD he's there for you.)
*respects all forms of life.  (Unless you're hurting others, in which case, you've just earned your place on his >:( list.  I swear that's half of why he dislikes Klingons. Diversity?  Bring it on, it's awesome!)
*An intellectual.  (He manages to WIN GAMES OF CHESS with Spock.  He manages to outsmart about as many enemies as he seduces.  He manages to come up with plans to break evil computer enemies.)
*A history nerd.  (Especially early astronomer programs. Which...here's a guy who's a starship captain, he has all the exploration of space he wants, and he STILL DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH SO HE NEEDS TO READ MORE ABOUT EARLY SPACE PROGRAMS.  we found the space!sphere)
*Sometimes suave, sometimes awkward (seriously, have you seen him trying to give the Talk?  It's really awkward until the possibility of nonconsensual comes up at which point it's still slightly awkward but really important GET USED TO NOT GETTING EVERYTHING YOU WANT)
*The type to remember every single crew member's name and little details about them and their lives are IMPORTANT TO HIM.
*Boss of a really cool workplace.  (He'll make sure things get done and listen to complaints and fix things but if you think it's not a fun place to work just watch the crazy crew goof off.)
*A survivor.  (Who doesn't ANGST about everything seriously we need to see more of that asap but goes and appreciates life just that much more and smells the flowers and watches sunsets with a smile and loves his friends and family and the Enterprise.  Who hurts and sometimes just lets himself hurt without *men can't cry* ugly things that we shouldn't inflict ourselves with and is that much stronger for it. Who understands how awful it is for other people suffering because he's been through it himself and thus refuses to let others suffer if he can help without making it worse, because yes, he understands that.)
*A complete and utter idealist (but hasn't lost sight of the practical side of things and knows that things can be
better but you need to WORK HARD to get there).
*Really smart (could use/fix most of the stuff on the Enterprise, wouldn't want to even try on his own because
he's)
*Lonely (and really worried about yelling at his subordinates in moments of stress and they're all like 'what seriously we know you're a tribble harmless until provoked')
*REALLY DISTRACTED BY FLOWERS (so he's supposed to distract this woman and yeah okay there might have been attempted seduction in there but it's not a romantic dinner or anything like that THE MOST DISTRACTING THING HE CAN THINK OF IS A FLOWER GARDEN YES THE MOST MACHO MAN YOU WILL EVER SEE)
*An out of the box thinker (when most people are like OH YES THE MASTER STRATEGY THINK OF CHESS he's like uhhhm. okay chess is not working in this situation LET'S TRY POKER)
*A democratic or participative leader (who listens to all his subordinates when they have something to say and only really puts their ideas down harshly when they're dangerous--such as bigotry get that out of here son)
*A good quasi-military man (the only times I can really think of him breaking the rules are a) TRIBBLES and b) to protect his crew/family and there aren't too many cases of those during the series.  i mean, you might as well compare him to Gibbs, who probably breaks more rules and actually was in a military group.  He really has respect for Starfleet and the chain of command [not entirely sure why; they haven't exactly demonstrated themselves to be incompetent/on occasion corrupt] but what have you.  A couple occasions of breaking
the Prime Directive [which is a really weird/problematic concept anyway] but these are usually to protect his crew/get offworld/he TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEM IN HIS REPORTS LIKE AN ACTUAL CAPTAIN *COUGHINTODUMBNESSCOUGH*)
madimpossibledreamer: Jiraiya|Yosuke jumping and using a throwing star (bored)

He’s Dead, Jim (Death/injury count): red shirt threatened with knife. Orion neck pinched.

KIRK IS READING and needs glasses.

We are supposed to save life if possible.

“that was strange” yes, good.

I can’t wait for the Mudd episode.  Assuming they have one.

Good advice.

“Weaponry often complicates negotiations.” –Spock

“Why does anyone have to be a slave to anyone?” –Bones

“I’m sorry if I hurt anyone” uh actually you killed some people. And yes, they were bad people, and didn’t, perhaps, deserve life, but you don’t go ‘oops, my bad’, you go with self-defense and run with it.

Freedom is huge for Kirk.  Also why the blank are you kneeling??

Does this crew ship spock and kirk?  Because that’s a decidedly jealous look from spock there.

Thank goodness for Vulcans.

WOMEN IN IMPORTANT THINGS!  (I don’t recognize the braiding offhand, but that might be an admiral??)

Okay, here’s a point where the Federation’s cultural relativism runs into issues.  “We have to respect other cultures, even when they have slaves that they rape and murder” I’ll also point out, here, that Tellarites are, I’m 90% certain, a Federation race.  They can’t even punish them for engaging in slavery?  (Of course, I’m also pretty sure Lolani is up to no good.  She’s like the terrifying part of ultra-feminists or whatever the term is.  The ones who’ve been under the heel so long they think all men deserve to be discriminated against, if not tortured and/or killed.  It’s still a criticism of the system—without it as it currently stands, it would never have hurt people to the point they, too, become monsters.  Like the Faunis and the White Fang.)

All right, then prove it.

I’m going to guess the random Blue Shirt on bridge, given that he isn’t Spock, is Bones, because if there’s one person who’s there when he’s not supposed to be, it’s Bones.

“Usually, everyone is working”  Yes, good, thank you :)

I’m going to guess this is why there was something about hormone suppressors for Gaila.

(Cambion!Jim’s similar, but he can turn it on or off.)

Oh, come on, you’re charmed too.

Oh, hey, this is a point where Kirk isn’t telling the others “this is work, flirt on your own time” but maybe that’s because they’re not in the middle of a crisis rn?

Have you met Kirk?  He’ll figure out some brilliant scheme to make it work, even if—

….

Uhh.

Is he going to buy her and free her?  Cambion!Jim feels that’s a perfectly logical strategy, right Spock?

“You’re new to this ship, so I’ll excuse you for not understanding that when I say I’ll do everything I can, I’ll do everything I can.” –Kirk (uh, yeah, what I said above about the ‘brilliant scheme’.)

Prreeeety much.  It’s a prereq for working aboard this ship.  We all do it.

…not just males and females, darlin’.

Flirting, occasionally, but it’s also not a 100% thing.

She is a smart female, so she’s his type, but she’s also not blond.

It’s also not 100%.  What you wear is what you wear.  If you like wearing that, keep doing it.  Personally, I think Starfleet uniforms are cool, but.

Kirk, keep your cool.  You have more self-control than anybody aside from Spock.  Use it.

(that book looks old.  Cool.)

(also what is he referring to?  War and Peace?  I haven’t actually read it, so…honestly, if that’s not true, it sounds more like the fall of Rome, but I don’t know any specific books that deal with the subject…)

In your nature?  No.  You were taught, presumably part of your ‘make you a good slave’ program.

Smiles with intent.  Man, your Kirk is growing on me.

“that story isn’t consistent with the facts” here we go with the ace attorney again.  Bet you figured that out from Lieutenant Shaw.  Also, I have to dig out the Ace Attorney music again.  (confess the truth, maybe?)

If we can prove, you know, important things…I don’t know what the threshold is, but if we can prove them, maybe, maybe we can get you off free.  Like this?  Nuh-uh.  Phoenix Wright couldn’t do it.  Mr. Cogley couldn’t do it.

He’s clenching his fists so hard.

This has shades of…whatever that one with the…Elaan of Troiylus, that’s the one.  I might’ve misspelled it.

You really should trust Kirk.  Then again, you might not be able to trust any men, so.

RIP Kenway.

That is a ridiculously good version of the Galileo.

“I’ll deal with you in a minute.”  Yes, you were under alien influence, but also, no.  Bad Red Shirt.

Female red shirt!  She looks interesting.

NONE OF THIS IS HELPING MY JOB BE ANY EASIER.  If I can show she was innocent in those deaths, if I can show she didn’t try to seduce me, if I can show she didn’t seduce one of my crewmen and try to get off the ship, I might have a better chance at all of this.

Inoculations are probably used when you can’t count on the Orion female to cooperate with suppressors (and not seduce the medic trying to give the shot out of giving one).

Headcanon: Dr. McKennah is having an affair with her behind the scenes of this one.

Spock hanging out behind Kirk as a support.

…you don’t know that I read this stuff in my spare time, what laughably little there is of it, and know that, do you?

MIND MELD

The ‘more emotions with a mind meld’ thing was played perfectly.  Before that, you’d been an adequate Spock.  Then again, perhaps it simply needed some time for you to get into the role.

Not likely.

….okay.  there is a plan.  Kirk just came up with a plan.

Bones’ face.

…your voice sounds like Andre the Giant.

HE’S BOUNCING.  ALERT THE…UH.  PRESSES?  I DON’T KNOW.

Getting the mannerisms down is a good start.

There’s a red shirt who knows her duty.  I like her.  She’s cool.  She better show up again.

GUYS.  THERE IS A PLAN.  Her, I can understand, but TRUST YOUR CAPTAIN YOU NINCOMPOOP. (is that spelled correctly?  Blah.)

Nope. He’s not.  Not if he can help it, and he’s pulled off longer odds before.

Accurate, but he’s not doing nothing.

Red shirt lady outside.  Why aren’t you doing anything about the obvious non-messagy stuff going on?

Matthew Kenway, what even is.

Scotty says as he’s drinking Scotch.

McKennah just “I need more alcohol for this”.

Everyone’s expressions.

Bones just stares at Kirk going “really?”

Is that really your big gambit?  (not that it’s not…I don’t know, I’ll wait and see.)

Slaps table.  Also yes, good kirk-like speech.

Cambion!Jim has an idea!  Come on, really?  No?

Kirk fighting style, yes, good.  Perfect.

From our point of view, right now, you’re all animals.

“Civilized people do not treat people as property” accurate  (and not only true of slavery…some people like to treat their wives or girlfriends as just property, too)

You…got to it.  A bit late, though.

What about over an entire slave system?  Because it’s never about just one slave.

Those are tears.

Uhura, why of all people are you upset by this?

…She blew them up rather than go back.

Note that most of his crew would follow him even against Starfleet.

Oh, it was the roman empire.  With their slaves, right.

Kirk, sending Kenway off to do great things.

Wait did that really just say someone’s last name was vroom.?  LOLANI’S ACTOR’S LAST NAME IS VROOM.  THAT IS AMAZING.

He’s Dead, Jim (Death/injury count): 2 aliens?, simone (engineering?), sulu coughing. Kirk getting smacked around. Apollo phasered. Uhura got zapped.  Uhm.  More than zapped?? Apollo briefly used energy.

Guessing that’s Scotty.

Kirk is geeking out.  Doesn’t have the same charisma, though.  (but then, it’s only the first minute, so.)

“Playtime’s over.  Let’s get back to work.”  That, on the other hand…is totally something he’d say.

The special effects are great.

I like their sulu.

*drapes self over chair.*

Well, that’s one thing to do stuff.

“It’s just hard to see the taking of any life, even if it’s to protect our own.”

That’s a judging look.

I like that they’ve got actual old actors.

WWAIIT.  Wait.  FULL STOP MR. SULU, THAT’S JUNPEI AS CAPTAIN?   …huhhh. I thought I recognized the name.

Oh, hey, that’s actually Old Scotty’s son playing Scotty.  Nice.

(I don’t especially like their Bones but he might grow on me.)

That’s so weird, seeing Junpei actually alive.  ...you know what I mean.

Oh, that’s supposed to be Apollo.

Oh, you forbid it.  oh, okay.  I’ll cancel that choice then.

Apollo and Athena?  I don’t…

Among other things I don’t think he’s attempting the accent.  We’ll see.

At least Vic has the mannerisms down.

Hey, is the redhead actually a doctor in the Sickbay?  Excellent!!

No, artemis.  Okay.

Oh stop being dumb, redhead doc.

“time, who never dared to speak my name, now pursues me.”

Well, at least he did the heel bounce.

Dr mckenna and Apollo.

That’s not good.

Kirk running like a weirdo.  Yes. Good.

Aside from potential PTSD.

Scotty, you’re letting your previous experience colour your judgement.

Nobody’s used the Awesome Eyebrow.

“I’m pleased to see I was remembered” Apollo 8 yes good.

Uhura singing. 😊

….I will just point out.  As a woman, catching the attentions of a Greek God…that’d be the point where you’d run for cover.

I see you managed to get your shirt off.

If you’re on this ship long enough, just get used to me shirtless/with ripped shirt.  It’s just a thing that happens.

….

Oh no.  redheaded doc is of the same type as Gwen Cooper.  I hate that type of character, where they’re supposed to be the only ‘compassionate’ one as one of the only females in the group, and yet the only ones they show sympathy toward (and berate their colleagues for not) are actually all the murderers, etc.

Everybody turning to look at once is really kinda creepy.

Well, at least she phasered the guy.

Show’s over.

“Apollo’s therapy will not be at the expense of those on the Enterprise, I can promise you that.”  yep.

Apollo has faith in mccoy.  Yes, good.  Well, this is the guy who can cure a rainy day.

Buuuut not death apparently.

Well, they did kind of just sit there while she died.

Jim’s super upset. Accurate.

Apollo healed her at great cost to himself.

Kirk gets super excited about sacrifice.

That’s a cool cape.

Where on earth (or outside of it) did they get the really, really accurate set though?

Self sacrifice is the best way to live, yes, if you’re so many characters.  (they don’t have ‘one year later’ very often.  Or, y’know, ever.)

Well.  I don’t think I took enough notes for graphs, which is unfortunate because I’m actually a little curious as to whether yellow shirts (the ‘new red shirts’) die more often.  However, I took less notes because I was less engaged—overall I definitely don’t like the new series as much.  I don’t find many of the people compelling (and the instant the security chief starts to get more interesting she dies).  It’s driving me crazy that people aren’t listening to the People With the Answers (usually Wesley Crusher, who’s unfortunately insufferable about it all).  I understand why.  They didn’t come out and say it, but the new Enterprise is a military ship, including the rigid hierarchy.  Picard is basically Gibbs, but without the charming ‘I’m going to swap a body with one of my subordinates so we can have a better look at it and solve the case someone’s trying to steal it from me’ brand of crazy.  That’s not to say that I like the military mindset, and I certainly wouldn’t want to serve on this Enterprise.  Riker’s…more like the stereotype everyone thinks Kirk is sometimes, and like a more charming Garibaldi (Babylon 5) in others.  Data’s interesting, but they haven’t done enough with him yet.  Geordi’s also an interesting character idea, but not much has been done with him yet, either.  And Troi, well, I find the Betazoid an interesting race, but again, it hasn’t been utilized to its full potential (and she’s basically just ‘lemme consult Captain Obvious who points out things you wouldn’t need a power to see’).  Worf…oh, I’m gonna get annoyed by how much Worf gets hurt, because, y’know, interesting concept.  Let’s take an ‘enemy race’ alien and have them join the crew, then barely explore why their certainly different point of view is useful, their strength is useful, and basically have them be that chair that gets tossed around every episode.  The doctor doesn’t do much doctor-ly stuff and is mostly just complaining every episode.  The holodeck is fascinating and at least some of the science is actually impressively well-researched, though some things (the lingering lipstick in one episode) bugs me, because without the equipment it shouldn’t still be kept up!  I just…

I guess one of the big issues I have is that most of this stuff is being done heavy handed, and potential in writing concepts isn’t being tapped.  You’re not left to find your own morals or opinions, you’re repeatedly bashed over the head by a two-by-four to come to the same conclusions as the writers.  There’s no coherent theme, and depending on the episode mostly everyone besides Wesley is more or less annoying.

It super doesn’t help that the pilot plus the first two episodes were absolutely awful.  From what I read, Code of Honor is considered one of the worst episodes.  Of any Star Trek series.  That’s a lot.

I enjoyed the holodeck episodes, particularly The Big Goodbye, and I also super enjoyed the creep factor of the series arc Conspiracy.

I probably will finish, eventually, when I can make myself do so.  If nothing else, I’m told the Borg are worth the watch.  It just may take a bit between lack of inclination and lack of time.
