People Who Weren't FB; playing god
Aug. 23rd, 2017 11:51 pmIt's basically revisiting the darkness of the Suzuha ending if you've played/watched the Visual Novel as opposed to the anime.
I'm actually kind of scared as this already got super dark and there's people listed for future fic that would just break me even more and.
This is as soul-crushing as that one Silent Hill Sherlock fic.

“I’m…fine,” Okabe puffs out.
His daughter looks at him with the same skeptical face Kurisu gives him. “You’re an idiot,” she informs him, and then brings out her cell phone.
“That’s…not…necc—” he wheezes, but the world threatens to spin away again.
“Hello, Mommy. Sorry to bother you, but Daddy really doesn’t look good. Also, he’s being an idiot.”
“That could go without saying,” Kurisu responds, but even their daughter can hear the concern in her voice. “Hang on a minute; I should leave the lecture hall,” she states, but it isn’t even that before she’s back. “Put Daddy on.”

Warnings: that ubiquitous 2nd person thing again looming on the horizon
Suzuha was right, and you didn’t believe her. This doesn’t bring any comfort; she’s not here to stop SERN’s plans. Mayuri will die, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. You can’t even rebel or escape. FB—the leader, here, of SERN’s Rounders—has made sure of that.
All it brings is dread. Pain, grief, all the emotions that you had been holding inside, all pour out at once.
She watches you dispassionately; she, the one whom you had called assistant, she, with whom you had confided every thought and fear, she, who was far more than the emotionless robot you had thought at first.
She resembles that emotionless robot now. Beautiful. She’s a woman now, beauty fully realized, confident and in control, and completely cold. She is seeing suffering, pulled the trigger and watched a friend die, and she doesn’t even care.
“I wanted you to know that this is pointless,” she explains after a pause. “I know every move you make. I’ve traveled in time, too, Okabe. You’re a lab rat in a maze, running through again and again, but there’s no cheese.”
You’d called yourself a mad scientist, but now, watching her, you know you had been a mere child, acting at the real thing. In the presence of a master all you feel is awe and dread.
Moeka’s eyes are wide, but she follows every order without question, an aura of worship in her eyes.
Kurisu runs into the path of Moeka’s gun, but it doesn’t stop the gun the future Kurisu is holding. “You’ve made a mistake. If anything happens to me…”
You all understand what she’s talking about. The Kurisu from SERN frowns deeper and actually looks concerned, and for good reason. If anything happens to the Christina of the past…it’s not certain that convergence will allow her to be killed, but if she gets hurt, that might stick.
That’s his assistant. Using her brain to break SERN’S plans.
And, further.
She’d actually listened to him about the Future Gadgets. That’s Moad Snake he just employed. “Go, Okabe!”
“Get him!” FB yells, ice thawing in the face of her fury, but you run to the Time Leap Machine, just as before.

He’s the asshole that sits in class and harasses the professor, disrupting learning. He barely takes notes. He loves baiting Kurisu.
And yet, he ends up with the highest grade on the test. It’s not just chuuni bs. He’s intelligent.
He’s annoying. He’s a snob. But his theories are interesting.

It takes a while, but the thought finally occurs to me. “There weren’t any gelified animal reports, right?”
I glance up and Kurisu’s staring at me with intensity.
Daru’s the one who replies. “Not that I saw.” His fingers are already swimming over the keys.
“Hmm.” I’m quiet, then speak again, expanding on my point. “Well, not that I wouldn’t panic if one appeared in a wall before me, but they’re of less note and easier to hide than a human. However! Science dictates that animal testing be completed to satisfaction before humans can enter the equation, does it not?”
Christina nods. “This sort of science, though—no respectable scientist would hide their research like this. I don’t think we can assume they’re following proper scientific procedure.”
“Well, just assuming that it was.” I’ve been skimming the internet on my phone for useful (and relevant) information. “If that’s the case, then the issue may be size or complexity. I’m inclined to think the latter is the true culprit.”
It takes Christina a moment to catch on, but she does so before Daru. Well done, assistant! “Because of the salt. And the chicken.” She frowns. “I wouldn’t consider a banana to be more complex than a chicken nugget.”
I frown. That’s a good point. Damn you, assistant! We need more detailed information from Mayuri.
“In any case, a wormhole forming from a black hole is theoretically possible. But they’re inherently unstable.” Thank you Google.
Christina nods, agreeing more readily. “Black holes suck in everything, even light. Theoretically and mathematically, relativity and time behave oddly around them. Wormholes are, on the other hand, unstable (and even more theoretical than black holes). It’s a surprise SERN manages to get their Kerr black holes to stay open long enough to get a human through to the other side, even if they don’t arrive in one piece.”
I nod. Everything I had read (apart from science fiction) had said that the wormhole would collapse too quickly for such travel to be possible. Then a slightly horrible thought occurs to me, but it’s not like we haven’t been discussing human experimentation off and on for the past hour. “Maybe SERN is not testing the apparatus itself.”
“But the stabilizer!” Kurisu exclaims in her excitement. For one instant, the scowl is replaced by a neutral look on her face before returning in full force. “I have no idea what they’re even using to get it to work however defectively. There’s exotic matter, but it’s even more unlikely they’ve found that than this whole time travel nonsense.”
“It’s useless speculating without data,” I state casually and turn to Daru. “Add it to the growing list of things to search, hack!”
“Yeah, yeah.” He’s barely listening, but he does type it with speedy fingers onto the notepad we’re using as a sort of checklist.

Kurisu shows up for move-in-day and almost murders her roommate.
It’s unintentional. To be fair, when she shows up and sees the seeming male lounging about in an empty room without any moved in clothes or furniture drinking Dr. P, she’s convinced he’s a pervert who’s snuck into a girl’s room.
“Ow ow ow—do I have to show you my bra?”
The statement is breathless and full of pain.
Kurisu freezes. “What?”
“I’m a card-carrying member of the girl club,” the seeming male answers, irritated and with a louder voice. “Now would you quit assaulting me? Or I’ll be forced to conclude you’re an Organization spy.”
The rest of the conversation doesn’t end up making much more sense. (Kurisu’s particularly confused as to where all the personal effects are hiding), but by the end of it she’s sure of one thing—her freshman year isn’t going to be dull.

Chapter Summary: Kurisu thinks Okabe's a bad influence.
Word Count: 250

Notes: (I tried to think what they would name their kid. There’s no one except Suzuha that Okabe might want to name someone after, and Daru and Amane have their kid, so that’s out. But both Okabe & Kurisu are otakus, and Okabe at least knows Jojo’s, so maybe after Lisa-Lisa? I TRIED EVERYONE PLEASE FORGIVE ME)
“You know Risa made a girl cry today.”
“Mmmhmm.” Okabe’s staring at the latest paper on time travel, trying to decide whether or not it needs to be sabotaged, too. There are several concerning points. Fortunately, after all these years, Daru has stopped questioning why, particularly since his wife seems to understand, more than anyone except perhaps Christina. (Amane seems to have an understanding particular to time travelers, and yet, in the other worldline, it was her daughter who traveled through time, not her. It’s a puzzle he still hasn’t figured out yet, but he doesn’t want to pry too much and upset the balance.)
“She wouldn’t get off the swings and let anyone else have a turn.” He’ll be in trouble for ignoring her later, judging by the tone of voice, and if it was anything else he’d have put his work down long ago and given her his full attention, but this is important.
She’s definitely angry at his lack of response now. “She said that it was ‘the choice of Stein’s Gate’. Rintarou, your stupid ranting has corrupted our daughter! She’s turning into a spoiled brat!”
The words catch him by surprise. He has to set down the phone before he begins laughing hysterically. Judging by the sound on the other end, Kurisu is anything but amused, but still, it’s the kind of ironic he can’t ignore. Later, he’ll have to talk to her, but for now…
Daru picks up the phone. “I think you broke him.”

Notes: the movie did not occur in this STEINS;GATE worldline (and by the movie I mean the steins;gate movie, don't get confused)
also headcanon the movie they're watching is Edge of Tomorrow. Which Kurisu might not realize since it's not her area of interest or anything, but is actually based on a Japanese light novel called All You Need is Kill, which is a plausible reason why they might show it in Japan. (Just looked--they did show it practically everywhere in Japan. Hey, art to real life.) Also, it would have put the concept on Okarin's radar far earlier. Knowledge of the movie is not essential, but if you know the movie you have a better idea of why Okabe's freaking out so much.
( Yes, it might be an Organization plot. No, I'll go scout the area and report my findings. El. Psy. Congroo. )

She realizes that it was all for her when Hououin Kyouma resurfaces again after she finds him. Angry words die on her lips when she sees that he’s been posting under the name labmem001 in the interim, and sees the way he looks so sad when he thinks no one’s looking.
“So…are you trans or what?” she finally asks one evening, and gets an exaggerated shrug in response.
“The question of my identity is so difficult that it’s even more complex than building a working means of time travel. I don’t think about it much.”
She looks at him—her?—and sees someone with so many identities and yet none at all. He juggles them effortlessly, but the minute someone asks him for an honest opinion from the real person building underneath the skin, he—she?—looks completely lost.
Clearly a chuuni, yes, but there are times when she—he?—states the most outlandish things looking serious (yes, Okabe is capable of that, surprisingly) that she almost believes her—him?—without question.
Okabe may not think about that, but he (or she) thinks about other things far too much. A selfish brat, she would’ve said, but seeing the way that he’s sacrificed so much and seems to have come out of the experience a hollow shell tells her the exact opposite.
“No wonder Luka-kun likes you so much,” she remarks, and he’s just taken a large gulp of Dr. P and is coughing helplessly now.

A Wrong Hypothesis

Chapter Summary: Kurisu discovers something she wasn't expecting.
Word Count: 400
Rating: teen
Kurisu walks into the lab and immediately sees something unacceptable.
Okarin is snoring on top of Mayuri, head nestled on her stomach. The TV is on.
She immediately storms over and drags him up by the ear. He’s yelping. “Assistant, unhand me at once! How dare you assault Kyouma—”
She shoves him back onto the couch—probably so that she can torture him properly; she’s not sure now—and that’s when the world loses colour and form and certainty.
That was…
She reaches out again, gently touches, and there it is again. He’s grinning like a mad thing, fire lit in his eyes, and Mayuri is finally waking up, blinking owlishly. “Kurisu-chan? What’s going on?”
“Oh, my dear hostage, Christina’s just found something that doesn’t correspond to her worldview.” He’s outright taunting her now, playing, showing off, and she’d be tearing him to pieces right now if her brain was functioning. “Well? You’ve made a rather amateurish mistake, pervert girl. What scientist just accepts visual observations without gathering proper corroborating data?”
She looks him over again. The lack of a proper Adam’s apple probably should have clued her in, but everything else—the ridiculously short, unbrushed, fairly unwashed hair, the very slight amount of stubble, the clothes he wears, the fact that he—she, Makise, she—is wearing a bra but has one of the flattest and most easy-to-miss-chests she’s ever seen…
“You’re. A girl,” she states flatly, and Mayuri laughs in surprise, a bird’s song.
“Okarin is Okarin!” she corrects happily, and Okabe flashes her a smile before turning to Kurisu.
“I am Hououin Kyouma!” she responds, flinging her hands wide. The voice isn’t what she’d expect from a girl, either, low. Probably because of the testosterone, her brain tells her, since the crazy Japanese teenager has enough for merely the beginnings of a beard. That affects vocal range. “Gender does not matter to a mad scientist! But on the other hand…” The voice becomes quieter, and there’s something almost normal and human in the gaze. “…Everyone must look their part, if all the world’s a stage.”
“You should let me make a costume for you, then! Mayushii has plenty of ideas!” Mayuri exclaims into the silence, drawing a smile from Kyouma even as she—he—whatever argues against the idea, leaving Kurisu to slowly sit on the couch and figure out exactly what her life has become.
