“Has anyone seen the driver you had?  Or any staff whatsoever?”  a voice joins their game, and Joey holds his hands tight to his head and screams.
“NOT YOU TOO, KAIBA,” he yells from the corner, and Kaiba winces.
                 “What is this nonsense, anyway?”
Yugi glances up, wearing a sweet smile.  “We’re telling ghost stories.  Joey…isn’t particularly a fan.  We told him he didn’t have to stay for it, but, well…”
“I ain’t goin’ out dere for da ghost ta eat me.”
Seto grins.  It’s not exactly nice.  “You know, you’d think with everything you’d been through he’d be just a little better with this.  I take it he wouldn’t like to hear the story behind some of the Fiend cards?”
“I toldja he was evil!” Joey wails.
Kaiba shakes his head, amused, and turns serious.  “Back in the real world, I know how an event like this is run.  There should be people everywhere helping set it up.  I don’t think I’ve seen anyone other than us since we entered this place.”
Joey makes some kind of whimpering noise, but Yugi nods thoughtfully.  “You know, I think you’re right—”
The lights go out, and Joey screams.  A light reappears, which turns out to be Tristan, grabbing a flashlight, and Kaiba’s kneeling in front of the shivering blond.  He slaps him, hard.  “Come on, Wheeler.  You beat me once.  You may appear like an incompetent duelist but it’s time you stopped acting like one.”
“Easy for you to say, Mr. ‘Nothing is Real’.”  Joey bites back, but there’s a little strength in his eyes again.
“Well, in this world, which is a place that most of you don’t seem to live in, it’s much more likely that this is a power outage.  Which is something that any good businessman should’ve prepared for,” Kaiba sighs.  “We should look for the staff.  They may know how to fix this, though I’m not holding my breath.  So far, they’ve shown themselves to be utterly incompetent.”
“How do you know?  We haven’t even seen them,” Tristan argues.
“Exactly,” he responds, then rolls his eyes and elaborates.  “An event like this, employees should be around to take care of the VIPs.  I don’t believe in coddling people, but you don’t just go and ignore them, either.  And usually in places like these, you need people to stop idiots from wandering into areas and, say, turning off the power or getting drunk and setting things on fire. Where are they?”
“That’s…a good question,” Yugi answers, and then smiles and rolls his eyes at his friend.  “You know, it’s more likely that whoever this was just didn’t have staff on hand to begin with than they all disappeared, Joey.”
Kaiba blinks, then nods.  “That’s actually a good point for once, Yugi.  But if so, they’re clearly not planning anything normal for this tournament.  Let’s go find whoever or whatever’s here.  They have some explaining to do.”

there were no tears there are no pictures I deny everything categorically
(which is weird because, seriously, I don’t get emotional at television, except for maybe once when they killed off a character in Supernatural, I forget who because there were so many)
…but this was one thing that really bugged me about the finale
So here, have a fix-it
Because Kaiba is awesome and had wasted potential as a character to write
And I will wring that potential outta him and the computer and everyone else I can think of when writing

Chapter Summary: Rebecca's homesick.

Word Count: 595
Rating: teen.  ensemble piece i am not tagging everyone because most barely show up

                “Rebecca?  What’s wrong?”
She glances up, instantly tries to get rid of all traces of the homesickness on her face, but from his frown it didn’t work.  “Where are the others?”
Yugi gestures vaguely, somewhere up ahead.  “Rebecca.”  That voice is sterner than the Yugi she knows.  Probably the Pharaoh.  She doesn't care too much for him, but he's not going anywhere anytime soon.
“I’m…missing the celebrations, I guess.”  It’s odd.  It’s not one of those things she would’ve thought would be high on her list, particularly with how much time she spends with her Grandfather, rather than in America, but she finds herself missing it now.
Yugi looks confused for a full minute before he asks, hesitantly, “Oh, yeah…isn’t today some big holiday in America?”
She rolls her eyes, pokes at him.  With the speed he gets out of the way, she wouldn’t be surprised if he’s ticklish.  Only the Independence Day, jeez.  Is all this stuff I hear about Japanese schools being so much better just lies?”
Yugi looks flustered, but he doesn’t get to respond, because an idea strikes him.  “Stay there!” he calls, and runs off as fast as his short Muto legs can carry him.  She doesn’t get a question out before he’s gone.
He returns with a glowstick and proudly hands it to her.  “I know it’s not exactly fireworks, or…whatever else, but…it’s something.”
“How much did that cost?” she asks, digging around in her bag, but he quickly stops her.
“You’re my friend.  And my friends deserve to be happy.”  The words themselves may be cliché, but…he means them, with all his heart, and there’s a power behind them that she would’ve missed, before he’d shown her what it meant to have a friend, to put your heart into whatever you did.  If there was one person good at demonstrating that, it’s Yugi Muto.
“Téa’s lucky,” she states, and giggles a little as he turns bright red.  “But…I think I really needed a friend, so thank you for being such a good friend.”
“You’ll always have a friend.  You’re not alone, Rebecca,” he says with that same fervor, and the smile he gives lights up the night as beautifully bright as memories of fireworks.
(Later, Joey learns that it’s a holiday and promptly insists that they go to Burger World, rather than one of the restaurants in Kaibaland, as it’s ‘more American’.  He might’ve just been looking for an excuse not to give Kaiba any more of his money, but the way that he—all of them, really, even Téa when she’s not worrying about a potential rival—worry about her, welcoming her into the group as if she’s one of them, which involves a level of ‘take care of friends’ she hadn’t even guessed existed—well, it’s heartwarming.
Mai shows up, and is welcomed with the same open arms.  How she always knows exactly where to show up is a bit of a mystery.  Somehow, it hadn’t occurred to Joey that he was flat-out broke, but between Mai, Téa, and Yugi they manage to scrape together enough to pay for the meal, which seems oddly fitting.  Tristan’s caught between admiring a new girl that Rebecca’s never met before, who seems like a little bit of an airhead and likes to speak in third person, and Joey’s sister, Serenity, who’s fairly quiet but definitely interested in all the stories being thrown around.  She’s not sure when the moment exactly hits, but it feels like home, and she’s beaming by the point her Grandpa and Grandpa Muto walk in.)

Chapter Summary: The duel with Rafael goes a little differently...

Word Count: 420
Rating: teen.  Slight horror.

As the duel continues, Yami feels his fury rising, but then, so does Yugi’s.  It reassures him that this is a righteous cause, if even his calm, forgiving partner is angry.  Still, there’s something different about Rafael than most of their opponents.  How can someone so misguided play with such respect for his own deck?  Part of him is starting not to care.  All the people Rafael and his buddies have hurt are crying out for justice.
But the duel drags on, as Rafael continues with the same confidence that he’s going to lose, and the absolute dismissal like he isn’t even a threat stings in a way it’s never done before.  He’s always been underestimated, so why is it this hurts?  And their plan makes him sick.
Destroying the world, based on an assertion everyone is evil?  How dare he judge?
Rafael plays Exchange, and he doesn’t realize, not at first, what he’s been given.
It’s the Seal of Orichalcos.  He can’t play that.  Not that card.
“We’ll have to rely on the heart of the cards,” he muses, but Yugi’s uncharacteristically silent.  Even if it saves the world, though, he can’t use it.  No matter how tempting, the power to save the world, to save his friends, he can’t.  With all of his strength, he continues to resist, calling on his cards to do what he cannot.  But it seems a losing battle, and he growls.
Yami feels a flash of impatience from Yugi before he’s forcefully shoved out of the way, and when he realizes what’s happening, Yugi’s standing in his place.
“Yugi!  What are you doing?” he asks, reaching forward, but there’s a distance between them that he’s never felt, and Yugi doesn’t turn, doesn’t even acknowledge his presence.
“You’re going to pay for all the people you’ve hurt, Rafael!” he yells, and there’s something wrong with his voice.  There’s a sneer to it that isn’t right.  It isn’t his partner.  “I play the Seal of Orichalcos!”
“Yugi, don’t—”  The Pharaoh realizes, belatedly, that he’d been considering playing it himself, that it hadn’t seemed the absolutely dangerous idea that it does now.  It plays on our weaknesses, our uncertainties.  It clouds our mind.  I’d thought that Yugi was unaffected, but it seems like I was wrong.  And it’s too late.  The Seal grows, shutting him out as Yugi had shut him out, and he’s the outsider staring in.  “Yugi!” he screams, hitting against the seal, but there’s nothing he can do.  It’s Yugi’s duel now.

Main Points:
Yugioh Disturbia!Verse
Chapter Summary: Yugi has a bad dream.

Word Count: 525
Rating: teen.  Slight horror.

Something’s wrong.  Yugi knows this, somehow.  Knows there’s something wrong, not just with this world, with him.  The feeling’s scary.  He tries to shove it away, but it won’t go.
He doesn’t remember where he is.  He looks around.  It’s an amusement park, apparently.  There’s a Blue Eyes that looks like a statue, towering over everything.  Despite his usual enthusiasm, he doesn’t feel like going and looking.  This place looks fun, but for whatever reason he doesn’t feel like he’s having fun.  Usually he’d be here with friends, or Grandpa at the least.  He doesn’t see anyone nearby.
There are whispers, like there are people talking just out of earshot, and he feels like there are people around, but somehow he’s just not seeing them.
He feels the urge to run, to just run and keep running.  But he can’t move.  It’s like he’s paralyzed.
And then he turns, puts his hands in his pockets, and starts walking toward the door with a grinning Saggi painted on it.
Instantly, he’s cold.  He’s shivering, but he keeps walking like he doesn’t feel anything.  He tries to stop walking, but it doesn’t work.  He’s surrounded by mirrors and an unsettling blend of happy colors that usually he’d love.  He keeps feeling like there’s something moving around beside him, but he can’t turn to look.
The feeling of something cold, a creeping chill, is getting stronger, and so, too, is the feeling that something’s wrong.  He’s screaming at himself to stop, to turn around, to leave, even to just sit down on the floor and cry, but he keeps walking like he’s possessed.
He’s in a round room, with mirrors all around him, distorting him.
No.  This is your true face.
He turns in circles, starting to panic completely.  There’s a black mist beginning to creep down between the mirrors, and his mind feels funny, confused and sharp at the same time.  Where is everyone?  Someone will come save him.  No one will save you.  You’re all alone.  No, Yami.  Yami will save me.  The Pharaoh’s abandoned you like the pathetic, mewling weakling you are.  You have to take the power for yourself.  N-no, Yami wouldn’t—
And then the mirrors shatter all around him, and he falls to his knees, screaming as the black fog rises.  There’s a green glow, a circle all around him, and out of the mist another him appears, one with an evil smirk.
Poor little me, all alone.  One of the shards of glass rises, and with a little force the other him embeds it in his cheek.  He screams again, tries to back away, but he runs up against something.  He’s trapped.  No escape now, little rat.  Run, run, run, run in the maze, run while you still can.

Yugi wakes screaming.  For a good long minute, he can hear nothing.  He is completely and utterly alone, and no one will save him.  Not Grandpa dashing upstairs, not Yami shaking him fervently, trying to wake him from the dream.  He doesn’t remember anything, either, just the complete and utter terror and the surety that he is not safe, not now, not ever.

“Okay, what’s your favorite card, then?” she asks, and Yugi beams again, kicking his feet like a teen rather than the adult he is.
“It’s hard to decide, really.  There are so many amazing cards.”  He pauses, then smiles shyly at her.  “Maybe I can show you some of the cards I’ve got in my deck at some point.  There’s Maha Vailo.  I’m most like him, I think.  And there’s Dark Magician.  He’s one of my favorites.  But then, the Magnet Warriors and Kuriboh are cute…and Mirror Force is one of my favorite trap cards, but I wouldn’t call it one of my favorite cards overall…” he pauses for breath and shakes his head, looking a little sadder.  “But then, it’s pointless talking about it, really.”
“Why’s that?” she asks.  It’s the most excited she’s seen him, and it’s cool to see.  And sad to see vanish.
“Well,” and he sounds really unhappy now.  “Pegasus—that’s Maximillion Pegasus, the creator of Duel Monsters—liked getting inspiration from myth and legend all around the world, if the cards were any indication.  He disappeared ten years ago on an expedition to Egypt and hasn’t been heard from since.  His company, Industrial Illusions, tried its best to hang on, but it’s going to go bankrupt later this year.  I think they still thought he was alive, probably longer than anyone else did.  At this point, though, I think they’re just trying to sell off the last of the cards.  Kaiba tried to keep it afloat, but there’s only so much money KaibaCorp could put into it without going bankrupt, too.  It’s rare that anyone’s even heard of Duel Monsters anymore, and pretty much no one is playing card games these days.”
“Have they grown up?” she asks, and he smiles, sweet and innocent, back.
“No one grows out of card games,” he responds with confidence, before shaking his head.  “Well, no.  That might not be the way to put it.  Maybe a lot of people do.  But for the good ones, never.  It’s in your blood.  I’m guessing a lot of people just put up their decks because, well…”  he chuckles, rubbing the spikes, which bounce a little, “…Not everyone’s into casual games.  A lot were just in it for the competition, and without official sponsors, there’s no such thing as tournaments.”
He looks so sad, but like many of the realizations lately, there’s absolutely no way to fix it.  Unless…  “Maybe you could teach me to play?”
She’d thought he’d been excited before, or pathetically grateful before, but the way that he grabs her hands, eyes shining, she’s quite possibly made his year.  “Yeah, that’d be really cool!  And given that Seto wouldn’t mind more people writing about how awesome Duel Monsters is, he might even be willing to give you enough cards to make your own deck.”  He pauses, then winks playfully.  “Of course, I have to warn you that I’m pretty good, but I could probably be persuaded to go easy on you, seeing as you’re a beginner and all.”
