Yugioh Universe Optional
Chapter Summary: Joey has a question for Yugi in the wake of the first strike by the Rare Hunters.

Word Count: 730
Rating: teen.
            “So, Yuge, whydja do it?”
Yugi’s staring at him blearly, like he doesn’t quite understand the question, so he clarifies gently, “You coulda saved yourself, ya know.”
His friend’s expressive face bunches up, like he honestly might cry, but instead he asks quietly, “Well, why did you save me, Joey?”
Wheeler sighs.  “Clearly, dey put you on some heavy stuff.”
There it is, again, the frustration that Yugi gets when people aren’t listening to him or taking him seriously.  Joey gets it.  “I’m being serious!”
“Alright,” Joey nods, humoring him.  “It’s ‘cause you’re my friend, an’ I wasn’t gonna leave you dere.”
Yugi nods firmly, as if that settles the argument.  “Exactly.”
Joey blinks.  “Help me out here, ‘cause I’m not getting’ it.”
Muto sighs and continues.  Now that he’s listening, his friend sounds…quiet.  Really tired, but…completely lucid.  “Yami.  I couldn’t just leave him.  I don’t know if the Puzzle could burn, or melt, but…even if it didn’t, I’d been drawn out there for Keith to steal it.  Yami’s my friend too.”
“So dat was Bandit Keith we saw out dere…easy, little fella.”  Joey puts out his hands to stop Yugi from sitting up by himself, given that he looks a little in pain, and grabs the glass of water for his friend.  Yugi looks frustrated again, but he doesn’t argue.
“Yes, it was.  Though it wasn’t exactly him?  It was more like he was possessed.”
The blond frowns and eventually nods.  “Like dat thing wit Bakura.”
“A lot like, though, I don’t know, he felt different.  I don’t think it was the spirit of the Millennium Ring.”  Yugi sighs again, fingers clenching a little in the blankets.  “I thought that if I’d put together the puzzle again, at least one of us could make it.  I’m the only one who’s done it, after all, and I don’t like the idea of Yami in fractured pieces for another thousand years.”
Joey smiles even as worry clenches at his chest.  “I get it.  I should’ve thought of dat.  An’ he’s my friend, too.”
Big purple eyes are staring up at him with wonder, and he laughs and ruffles his friend’s spiky hair.  “The two of you, togetha, helped me win da money for my sista’s operation.  An’ he’s not an evil, soul-sucking spirit, so dat makes him good in my books.”
Smaller arms suddenly wrap around him in an unexpected hug, and Joey feels his shirt grow a little wet.  He laughs and pats his friend’s shoulder.  “Hey, you’re both cool, an’ don’t let anyone tell ya any different.”
“Thank you, Joey,” comes the muffled voice, as Yugi tries desperately to pretend he’s not crying.
“Well, an’ maybe, he might’ve protected ya.  It’s not the first time he’s dealt wit’ some puny ol’ flames,” Joey states, trying to get Yugi to laugh.
His friend does, weakly.  “By that point, I’m pretty sure I wasn’t thinking quite straight, since the flames were getting to me.  But maybe.”  Yugi leans back carefully into the bed and stares morosely at the ceiling.  “I don’t think he could’ve, though.  He’s really quiet, even now, and the only reason I’m not panicking is that I can feel that he’s there.  He didn’t say anything, but I think the Puzzle being shattered hurt him, more than he wants to let on.”
Joey smiles again.  He can worry later, when that’s not going to disturb Yugi’s healing process or anything.  “Well, de two of ya rest up, ‘cause Joey Wheela’s on da case.  I’m not gonna let anythin’ happen to ya.”
To this, Yugi smiles, one of his big, innocent smiles that lights up the room.  It’s been too long since he’s smiled like that, since he’s been able to relax and just let the cares of the world float away.  He might seem like he’s happy all the time, but between the occasional sarcasm and the really deep comments, sometimes, he does think about a lot more than he lets on.  He honestly worries too much.
Kinda like Serenity.  Joey Wheeler, Serial Big Brother, apply if you want.  Yugi’s eyelids droop, and he falls asleep, and between Tristan casually flirting with the nurses outside like he’s not keeping a sharp eye on the corridor and Joey hanging out in his best bud’s room, anyone wanting to hurt their friend is gonna be in a world of pain.
