Yugi opens his eyes to darkness.  Usually he’s groggy when it’s late and he’s only just woken up, but right now, he’s perfectly wide awake, like he’s been awake for hours.  Urgency he doesn’t understand tugs at him, and he hears the whispers.  He’s grown used to the background feeling of the Monsters lurking in the shadows, aware of their presence even when they’re not here, but it’s been a while since he’s called any into this reality.  Usually, it was just so he had someone around, so he didn’t feel so lonely.  Then, though, they’d been fairly calm, relaxed, even excited, with only the slightest bit of vigilance that Yugi had only recognized after hanging out with Joey again.  It was protectiveness, but it wasn’t anything to worry about.
Now they’re all whispering, agitated, stirring.  Something’s wrong, and if it’s enough for them to feel in the world of Monsters…
They hadn’t found anything in their search.  Not even the guy who drove them there, which was more than a little suspicious, but they hadn’t found any clue as to where he’d gone, either.  It's like he'd just vanished.  Whatever Kaiba had been looking for with the hacking, too, he hadn’t found it.  (Well, as far as they knew.  He could be keeping it to himself for reasons of his own, of course.)  But even the reassuring idea that they're not likely to get attacked during the night isn’t enough to keep Yugi from worrying.  He agrees with Kaiba—something is going on, even if they very likely don’t agree on the source.
He slips out of bed and begins walking, feeling the cold begin to seep through to his skin.  He probably should’ve worn his warmer pajamas, but it feels like there’s something else, like it’s colder than it should be.  Like something supernatural is reaching in, chilling his very soul.
A door swings open, and Yugi nearly jumps at the sound but grits his teeth and clenches his fist instead.  His first instinct is to reach for his duel disk, but he hadn’t actually bothered to grab it, so there’s no point.
“Yuge?”  It’s Joey, sounding just as freaked out.
He blinks a little, allowing his heartbeat to calm, then nods.  “Yeah.  Sorry, were you still awake after all this, Joey?  I wouldn’t have agreed to tell stories if I’d known.”
“N-no?  I just woke up!  Yeah,” Joey nods decisively, then notes the worry on his face.  “Wh-what’s up?”
Yugi’s tempted for a moment to tell him that nothing’s wrong, but it’s not like that would fool his friend, and leaving him like that wouldn’t stop Joey’s phobia from swallowing him whole.  “I don’t know.  I just woke up, and…something’s wrong.”  If only he could put in words the nameless dread.
Joey noticeably swallows, but shakes his head, trying to rid it of any spider’s thread trace of his fear.  “Well, it’s safer to go togetha, so let’s do that, right Yuge?”
He nods, and together they wander the silent corridors.  It’s eerily silent, but it almost feels like the rooms themselves will attack if either of them attempt to speak.
And then, near the stairs to one of the ballroom, Yugi sees a figure coming from the other direction, and Joey yelps, covering his own mouth.  It looks like a ghostly woman, pale and beautiful, walking slowly, gracefully, unnaturally, a long, lacy, light dress trailing over bare feet.
Yugi takes a step, and Joey grabs at his arm.  “Don’t go ta her, Yuge!”
He can understand his friend’s concerns, but there’s something familiar about the person that he just…
The woman turns toward the long window showing a view of the cliff and lake below.  Joey breathes a sigh of relief that she hasn’t kept walking toward them, but Yugi isn’t ready to celebrate just yet.  There’s something about her…
She holds up an arm, and the glass shatters, flying and cutting her arm.  Joey whimpers, but there’s definitely something wrong.  She’s not a ghost.  As far as the Pharaoh knows, ghosts don’t bleed.  And then she walks straight toward it, and Yugi puts the pieces together, and feels the panic jolt through him.  That’s Téa, paler than usual, and the dead look in her eyes is one he’s seen before, he realizes with horror.
She takes a step and begins to fall, dress fluttering around her, and he roars, all Yami now.  The shadows rise, and he runs as fast as he can, straight for the same window.  He’s not thinking of a plan or strategy.  He’s not thinking at all.  Not at first.  Just reacting.
Joey screams behind him, tries to catch him, but he’s too slow.
The Pharaoh treats it like a dive, trying to do everything he can to plummet faster than Téa.  She still flutters like a butterfly in front of him, and looks like she’s not even moving at all other than the wind blowing the dress around her, but if she hits the water…
That’s not going to happen, he thinks grimly.
At last, he’s close enough.  It takes a few tries, but he finally manages to grab her arm and pull her closer.
Everyone, lend me your power, he calls.  He’d been reluctant to take power before, at some point.  But that’s so far away, and the water is growing larger, more true, somehow, compared to everything else.  He reaches inside and draws on everything, every last bit of power, his birthright, his legacy, and in answer he feels the shadows swell.  Where they had been agitated before, they’re all screaming with him, hearts united.
A familiar shape appears and takes her into a firm grip in powerful hands.  I did it.  I saved you.  He allows the victory swell through him, feeling the exhaustion raise clammy hands to grab him.  He can’t muster any emotion as the world slips out of his grasp.
A thousand voices clamor out.  And then, above it all, a familiar roar.
