It takes a little while to come to the conclusion that it’s because Edgeworth wants to trust him, but can’t quite—not that Phoenix blames him, not when he knows their situations were entirely reversed. So he’s forcing himself to just...confide in Phoenix and hope it doesn’t go horribly wrong. It’s the Edgeworth equivalent of a trust fall, if said trust fall is metaphorically throwing yourself off a cliff and hoping someone will catch you before you hit the ground. It’s slightly terrifying and breathtaking and Phoenix is simultaneously honored and worried.
But, like—he’s not the smartest person in the room, he knows, that’s Miles, it always has been, but even he’s capable of noticing things, like the fact that Edgeworth is over-the-top generous and unlike the Prosecutor he doesn’t have as much to give.
The car isn’t all that new, actually, and even he notices the slight worry in the glare and creased lines on the well-cared for but certainly worn suit every time anything goes slightly wrong with it. The way Miles and Maya will joke and rib each other about eating too much, but the fact that sometimes it’s down to him to eat whatever it is because the other two will just continue to thoughtfully leave the last bit for each other until it’s long rotten and started to turn to compost.
The way they barely use the AC. It’s all fans and shorts (and yeah, Phoenix had nearly keeled over at Miles in shorts, because it’s Miles, to begin with, he’d thought his old friend would spontaneously combust before ever wearing shorts and also wow that’s not fair at all maybe it’s a good thing they’re no longer on opposing sides of the courtroom because that image would be way too distracting) in the summer and roughly eleven layers in the winter. Which, uh, Miles with fingerless gloves also had never been a thought to cross his mind, and it’s weird now that it has. But also it’s...fitting, in some way, because this is clear evidence that this is Defense Attorney Miles and not Prosecutor Edgeworth, and it’s much easier keeping them separated in his head this way.
Maya’s the one that goes to the food bank, to supplement what they can afford. It’s not that Edgeworth is too prideful to go, apparently. It’s the fact that the last time he went, he had a panic attack, and so Maya just offers to go every time.
Also, they have a piano. It’s ancient, apparently a Fey family heirloom left from the days when they actually had a presence in the city, and there’s obviously attempts to maintain it, even if there’s limited resources for that. Miles can play, though he doesn’t do so often, which isn’t too surprising, but Maya can, and that is, and it’s clear that they’re siblings, if adopted ones, in the way they squabble and work together.
