What are we planning on doing about this Stand killer?” Joseph asks in halting Japanese.
Your Japanese has gotten no better, Old Man.  You should probably stick to English,” Jotaro-san states cooly, and Josuke thinks he detects the slightest hint of actual emotion from his stoic nephew.  Yeah, that’s definitely disapproval in his eyes, but he quickly looks back down to the newspaper.
Joestar-san smiles absently, looking every inch the pathetic old man.  Josuke feels guilty.  “Jotaro-san…” he pleads in English , desperately drudging up every memory of the class he can find and finding it dreadfully wanting (who knew it’d actually be useful?), and those green eyes actually glance up to look at him.  It’s uncomfortable, like the marine biologist is staring at his soul and finding him wanting.
Yare yare.  Fine.”  He pulls his hat down a little and glances at Joseph.  “I’ll put it plainly, Ojiisan.  You should go home.”
“But I could help!” Joestar-san immediately protests, sounding stronger than Josuke can remember, and Jotaro sighs and, if possible, looks even more serious.
“No offense, but Hermit Purple isn’t exactly the most combat-oriented Stand, and I’d bet you’ve ignored any of your Hamon training or you’d still be young.  That’s how it works, right?  Maybe if it was a more easily controlled tracking Stand, that’d be one thing, but as it is, you’re just in the way.”
Josuke gasps, even as Joestar-san curls in on himself, looking miserable.  “I—I guess you’re right,” he manages, and Josuke can tell his old man’s heart is breaking.
“You didn’t need to be that…”  He’s having a hard time coming up with the words, but he puts a comforting hand on his father’s shoulder.
“You wanted me to mince words?” Jotaro-san asks, finally showing a little emotion.  It’s not guilt, but he is sorry for having to cause the man pain.  What an awful situation.  “Too bad.  I don’t do that.  I didn’t tell you, Josuke, but he died.  It wasn’t for long; we were able to get him back, but he was still dead for a few minutes.  I had to watch as he nearly bled out and I don’t want to see that again.  Don’t make me face Grandma and Mom with the news.”
“…I knew you cared!” Joestar-san’s suddenly all smiles again.  “My favorite grandchild!”
“Your only grandchild,” Jotaro-san corrects.  Yare yare, sometimes I wonder whether you really are the senile old man you appear or whether it’s all an act to drive me insane.”
“So, have you sensed anything?” Joestar-san asks sunnily.
Josuke’s suddenly confused.  Well, his old man’s confusing, but that’s not the issue here.  “Sensed?  Star Platinum can do something other than stop time?”
Jotaro-san glares at the old man for a full few minutes, but when that fails to earn an apology turns back to Josuke, glare (mostly) disappearing.  To Jotaro’s default, really.  There’s even the hint of an ironic little smile.  “Star’s pretty precise.  He can notice a lot more than you’d expect.”
“But that’s not what I was talking about!” Joestar-san interrupts, grinning.  “My darling grandson Jotaro has a non-Stand related power!”
Josuke immediately whips his head back to stare at Jotaro-san, hair bouncing a little at the sudden movement.  “What?!”
You’re just making fun of me,” the marine biologist answers and then shakes his head.  “Besides, we don’t know how it works.  Given that’s how I was able to copy DIO’s timestop, it might well be some part of Star’s powers we just don’t fully understand.”
“He’s never explained to me how it works,” Joestar-san confides in a stage whisper, and Josuke’s torn between his own curiosity and the realization that Jotaro-san is continually becoming more uncomfortable with the conversation.  Eventually, he settles on the most neutral question.
            “Who’s DIO?”
From the way Jotaro-san stiffens, that wasn’t the neutral question he’d thought.  That’s anger, fear, other less recognizable feelings present in his eyes for a mere second before they’re all gone.  “An asshole who’s very much dead.”  That smile is…honestly scaring Josuke a little, but he’ll try not to think about it.  Anyone who could get Jotaro more than just annoyed?  They probably deserved it.  “Besides, it doesn’t much matter, Ojiisan.  It’s just about as inaccurate as yours, especially if there are a lot of people around.  If I get someone isolated, I can probably get some idea who’s a Stand User, but Stand Users don’t follow the same rules the rest of humanity does, so it’s harder to notice them.  I can tell for sure when someone’s dead, that’s it.”  He takes a long sip from his cup of coffee, as an excuse to not talk to them, and then adds heavily, “I’ve been looking.  So far, nothing.  I can tell he hasn’t left Morioh, but that’s probably more deduction than anything.”
“Oh.”  Josuke feels embarrassed, but doesn’t let himself take refuge in his milkshake like Jotaro.  He’s the uncle, he should be…something.  “I thought we were just wandering around hoping to provoke someone into a fight.”
Jotaro has to set down his cup because he’s in danger of breaking it.  He’s laughing so hard he’s bent over.
It’s a disturbing sight.  “I think you broke him,” Joestar-san says in a stage whisper, which only makes him laugh harder.
