Jenna raises an eyebrow as Mihai sits down next to her in the cafeteria, bold as you please. It’s clear she’s nowhere near as confident as she appears, but she’s hoping that if she just acts that way, it’ll be enough to fool them.
“So, how are we on hate crimes?” the Eagle asks cheerfully, and that, Jenna decides, rates both eyebrows.
“Sadly, in most cases, it’s out of our jurisdiction. It’s certainly not tolerated, if that’s what you’re asking. The name ‘Arden’ was chosen for a reason; the Eagle could be male or female, and no one will question.” From the way Arden makes a face, though, that was not the true worry—and if so, what other quality would she be concerned about?
“...If you’re transfem or non-heterosexual, it’s not as if you are alone, here,” she guesses, quietly, and Arden blushes deeply and splutters a bit.
“I am not transfem, I just—” she hisses and looks away, all bravado gone.
“You are the Eagle. If you want hormones or surgery, you can have them,” she tells Arden plainly, and from the look of shock and sheer want quickly concealed...well.
Marsh is probably going to complain, again, about a waste of time, but better the Eagle be comfortable in his own skin.

“I am the daughter of nobodies. I am nobody. What do you people want from me?” She’s scared, Jenna thinks, before the reality of that fact hits her. She’s scared. She’s a young girl who’s been kidnapped, as far as she knows, by enemies who want who knows what from her, and Marsh is hardly helping, as intimidating as he is and glaring at her.
So she kneels in front of the young lady, trying not to crowd her. “You are what some might call a bastard, but Harris was not your father. We have been seeking you to execute your father’s will for a long time.”
She looks a little less scared, a little more thoughtful, as she stares at her hands.
“I know it’s hard to believe you are probably the case of adultery…” Marsh begins, and she shakes her head.
“That’s...actually the least surprising thing here,” she corrects. She smiles and straightens up a little. It’s not as if she actually trusts them, though Marsh is acting as if she is. But then, maybe this is a good thing—this kind of watchful, wary frame of mind can only keep her alive. “I, um. I’ve got friends, here. Can you…?”
“I’ll order a few teams to keep a discreet eye on them,” Jenna assures her, and she nods and stands.
“Willow Rosenberg, Jesse McNally. Thanks.” They already know those names from the surveillance, but then, she probably knows that. Knows that if they mean ill, there’s little she can do.
“We should get going,” Marsh growls, and she just...raises an eyebrow at Jenna. She’ll fit right in.

this is inspired by phantom (syfy), xander’s AFAB, with the new name Arden Mihai, post series. Do not ask where it came from I don’t know. That being said, I don’t think it’s as weird as Primordium. I think JealousyFree!Xander sets the bar of weird for me.
he’s got a somewhat uncontrolled form of psychometry, only he doesn’t just get impressions from objects—people and places sometimes trigger it too. Other than that 90% of what he does is sheer tech and connections.
Jenna is basically the Guran; she is there to give any and all support needed. The hero is one created by the Kalderash Romani to protect all those not given a place in society. They have put down a few facilities, but the main facility is a really, really fancy boat.
The “Vandy” is Caleb Marsh, take that how you will.

madimpossibledreamer: Jotaro thinking 'yare yare daze' (yare yare daze)

I really like the oddballs when it comes to superheroes.  I really loved the Captain Comet Mysteries in Space two-part volume (and am kind of bummed I seemed to have misplaced it during college).  I’ll have to rewatch to see if it still holds up, but I also really, really like the Blue Raja and the Bowler, from the Mystery Men, an underrated superhero movie.  Bowler, specifically, is one of my favorite female superheroes.  Again, I’d have to rewatch to make sure it’s not problematic, but from what I remember, she had an actual revenge arc treated with the respect it deserved (not just as a cliché), her power was bowling, which is awesome, she was treated as just another member of the team, rather than as The Female Member of the Team, I liked her sense of humor, and…well, she didn’t come off as cliché.  Like, she was pretty, yes, but that wasn’t a focus.  She was pretty like an actual human being instead of Pretty Like That’s All Women Are.  (There was some risqué humor, but not with her.)  She had a normal costume, not a revealing one.  She wasn’t Raging Feminist, she wasn’t Anti-Fun (just focused on the mission), she had a sense of humor, she took over from her father and did just fine carrying on the superhero name, she went to graduate school.  She was so different from anything I’d seen before (and honestly since) and she’s my definite favorite from Mystery Men.

vigilante, technically )

madimpossibledreamer: Eye from manga drawing. (phoenix)
here's a writing prompt for miraculous fandom writers: a 'no secret identity' longfic, because it doesn't make sense as stated. I don't actually mean 'no secret identity' but I'll go into that further later, and seriously, no in-universe explanation!
Protecting people, sure, but they never went into that, and not every superhero has a secret identity.  Iron Man for example. Sure, the recent movies showed it to be a "bad" choice, but in reality it's just a different choice with different positives and negatives. You can always tell the authorities when there's a copycat on the loose, because you know who you are.  And people knowing your identity might actually be safer (or at least equally as safe) for the ones you love.
The teacher at your school knows to watch out for people going after your kid, for example.  For Tony Stark, he's under enough public scrutiny that his identity would be uncovered pretty easily.  You can be thought of as more accountable.  And with all the surveillance around, keeping a secret identity in general might be a lost cause.
On the other hand, maybe you've got a Hunted (my Hero System is showing).  Maybe you just want privacy (see: neighbors bothering a known policeman to figure out what's going on with crimes they care about).
And you can even go 'semi-secret identity' in which you tell some people but not others.  Which would be appropriate here, since going for some jewelry would be easy if HAWKMOTH knew who you were, but it would at least make sense for your partner, the journalist who could cover up where you've been, your parents (for Marinette; Adrien could easily not tell his dad on the grounds his dad would tell him no superheroing ever it's a distraction from your modeling).
And I am super on board for developing relationship, learning trust, developing partnership.
of course all of this would require an actual 'viewing order'

How many dry sentences can you fit in a paragraph?

How do you make such an interesting idea so dull in the first 10% of the book?

“We see another man in the outer office waiting”…what is this a movie script?

…I just…I can’t.  This style is not my cup of tea.  It’s got summaries like…I don’t know, it’s reading like my alternative paths tags.

I guess partly…it’s doing a lot of telling.  Not showing.

this is kind of the opposite of a rec?

madimpossibledreamer: Dante fighting demons (dante)

Is that a dude with a sword—yes.  That is a dude with a sword.

This is…did I somehow go right from Spider story?  Because there are pirates on a train now

That’s a missing head now okay vigilante it is (I kinda got that from the look but still)

Also obligatory: WHO’S DRIVING THIS TRAIN

And a dude through the roof

And…a train pole through, like, three people…this one’s violent

And a crunching boots on head…

…there’s not blood everywhere and it’s a little more brown than fresh blood would be and it’s pretty vicious

You’re…missing half your beard.  And hair.  And mustache.  That’s…a look

Look you totally said brigand.

Guessing this is the type of paranoid guy who can’t fully relax, but.

They’re totally teasing them.

Yeah, yeah, intimidating, big Ollie-like goof.

Seriously I feel like I’m reading Oliver/Tommy stuff here

Ra-Man is basically a Dr. Strange villain?

Also this feels like the Mystery Men villain party.

Gotham?  Is this DC?

Shows how much I paid attention to the front cover.  Duh.

Is this the infernal counterpart to the Colt?

Is Rose your evil AI or your evil…uh.  Bob?  (what do they call ghost spirit familiars?)

Wait that looks tech.  evil AI is my bet.

Just sneak out to fight crime, that’s good.  (also look at that cape movement and crouch.)

And he knew about…maybe not the hit, but that he’s plotting something?

“Are you mad?”  “Not in an unproductive way.”

Oh, uh, thanks for the gruesome exposition there, Midnighter.

Oh, kidnapping the boyfriend superhero and going to…Death?

Is that the dude who experimented on you?

Surprise hug!

Look I fully expect him to fight Death for the guy.

(what are their actual names?  Unless they just go by super names all the time)

Okay, Constantine|Dr Strange has also gotten with a guy.  Possibly an angel, possibly a griffon.  Who knows.

…demon worlds are weird.

Waaaait Fercifer—hang on.

DC.  Constantine is DC.  I’ve heard that name before.

Processing.

Neron, I…don’t know if I’ve heard that one.

He pulled a Jotaro “there’s your receipt”.  Brilliant.

Uh.  Demon ninjas, color-coded.  That’s different.

…oh.  Ohhhh.  It’s not about the hope, or earning it.  It’s because of the story, the tragic story where Apollo had a male lover.  Isn’t it.  (no?  pity that would’ve been cool)

Well that answers that question about the angel thing

No!  they did do the thing!  haha!  (thanks for making me feel smart dc)

Apollo, really?  I don’t need you breaking the 4th wall now

Aww.  That one was good.  And definitely Hellblazer adjacent.

madimpossibledreamer: Jiraiya|Yosuke jumping and using a throwing star (the universe is unimportant)

I actually clapped in delight when I found this one.

And oh man this is one of my favorite plots I legit have tried to write this several times (actors becoming the people they play or at least getting the memories/powers)

Nazi men weren’t the only ones getting people killed, Margo.

I like the argument of “are you the shadow?  Are you the shadow?”  Kent and Lamont interacting is fun.  (another reason why “Lamont Cranston is the Shadow” from the radio and movies is a copout.)

Ah yes.  Shiwan khan.  who I think showed up in one magazine story and the radio program based on that story and the movie (and it turns out the batman crossover; I looked it up to be sure)

“Come on in, Khan.  The water’s fine.”  DIALOGUE

Also “hit him with a cheaper vintage” LIKE YOU CAN’T AFFORD IT SHADOWMAN

“How many shadows does a shadow cast?”  I need to stop quoting all the dialogue.  IS GREAT

I don’t remember preston being one of the Shadows as I ranked the ones I’d heard by laugh

The answer is no.  it’s fictional.  Fair enough; can’t be using Orson Welles for this.

And there’s the Blue Coal commercial.  :)

LEAVE ME MY SAFETY BLANKET LADY

You have particularly good lines there

After reading the Spider story it’s so cool to hear the Shadow say “you can’t solve every problem with a gun” I am grinning

This is meta.  This is so meta.  This is the kind of self-interrogation that many people wouldn’t do and just.  (though what happened to preston I wanna know)

Though it’s kind of odd that you were talking to yourself and couldn’t make yourself understand, say, with a mind probe?

Also your literal shadow is talking to you

Right xinca was the tribe he’d befriended when he’d crash-landed and supposedly died

That doesn’t match the backstory I read, but then, it didn’t stay…consistent, let us say?

I thought I recognized the name.  good reference

(always good to be fighting the Nazis)

Aww that was good.  I’m glad I found this.

This is an interrogation/metanarrative of The Shadow.  Only instead of coming to a bad conclusion, the story renews its belief inhumanity, even though there are some humans with evil in their hearts.

madimpossibledreamer: Jotaro pointing at the camera (kujo)

this story is brought to you by a slightly more sane NRA, aka everyone needs guns but you should definitely train with them and keep them locked up away from the kiddos (sadly, not even kidding, it's one of the letters "The Spider" answered in the back of the magazine...)
(It comes off as especially bad when compared to the Twilight Zone/Shadow episode I'll talk about soon on first look and also...maybe not so good an inspiration for Spider-Man which apparently according to the (unfortunately late) Stan Lee he was somehow??)

honestly though?

The Spider is not as fun as The Shadow.  The Spider definitely comes off as a copycat (though I find the limp interesting, that’s like…a single detail).  I have no idea what this man does for a living.  Sure, he’s a vigilante, but what’s his day job?  I don’t get the sense that the writer has an idea of his backstory, only where he is now, and that’s good and all but that’s a single aspect of the character.

There’s definite similarities in the writing but I like “Grant’s” writing less.  Part of it is the construction—not sure what’s up here, but…eh, part of it might be that hyphens are liberally used rather than further elaboration.  I dunno, I’ll pull out one of my Shadow Magazines tomorrow to do a comparison.  (Looking at it now…The Shadow doesn’t overuse exclamation points.  Yeah, okay, it’s largely a punctuation thing.  The excess of hyphens/dashes and ellipses [problems I’ve got but I work on it] and exclamation points [which I do not have as a problem] make it a much less smooth read, unlike The Shadow where semicolons are often used correctly and unobtrusively.  It’s an issue of flow.  There are a few issues where dialogue also feels less good in flow, but.)

And part of that lack of character understanding leads to a less charismatic character.  One of the best parts of the Shadow is his organization, actually, which is something some of the adaptations miss.  And while there was the occasional Shadow story with racist stuff (largely in the radio adaptations, though again I’ll dig through and find the single story I’d found so far that was over the top—that would be Lingo, which has a Chinatown segment and also Jericho being cool), Jericho’s an important and especially for the time complex portrayal of an African-American character.  He plays a little into the gentle giant stereotype but subverts it in that he has to be just as quick-witted and fast on his feet as his (probably white) fellow Agents.

(Again, I’ll look more into the stereotype later, but especially in analysis of Detroit: Become Human I’d heard about the stereotype and it seemed different than that.  [Looked into it.  Okay, TV Tropes says that it’s the mere fact that they are scary, but there are subversions you can do with the stereotype and I’d say this is one, particularly when the villains are portrayed as unintelligent for believing the stereotype and underestimating him, particularly his intelligence.  Quite honestly it’s bad that we’ve got more nuance in a story from the 1930s than David Cage can dream of.  Okay, I’ve come up with a good analogy.  It’s like Charlie Chan, which is simultaneously stereotypical, regressive, progressive, and kind of fun, and there’s no problem with liking it [I do!] but you have to be aware and acknowledge and maybe even discuss that you can’t separate one part from all the others.])

It’s even sexist with the main villain woman being a cardboard cutout femme fatale.  While Margo was again, just as capable an Agent.  (Not always portrayed that way in movies or the radio program.  Unfortunately.)  The Shadow as portrayed in the magazine series, which almost always has more nuance, like I mentioned, than the movies or radio, is not perfect.  Certainly there are problematic aspects, but it seems less pervasive and one-sided than many of the other work I’ve seen from the time.

It just seems like while “Maxwell Grant” thinks about layers and layers of stuff that never makes it onto the page (and sometimes contradicts itself making the Shadow ever more so “terribly mysterious” [quoting Blue Raja there]), “Grant Stockbridge” just isn’t.  In other words, don’t just tell a story with things you find cool.  That’s first draft material.  Once you get to second and especially final draft, you have to question why things are there, what the audience will think, why why why.  Creators aren’t creating in a vacuum; what they make is both impacted by and impacting the world they live in, because media shapes public and private opinion.  It could go further (a female Shadow would be really cool, for instance), but I really like where the Shadow was, especially for its time, and I just…don’t like where the Spider is.  Not for today, and especially not for its time.  (Maybe I just read the worst of the Spider stories, kind of like how I’d write off the entirety of Star Trek if the first episode I saw was the TNG episode Code of Honor but…it’s not exactly a good look/start.)

I've had this done ages ago and only just now posted it.  I'm going to try to keep posting to catch up on stuff that's already written in between Shadowed Suspicion updates.  Fun to write, partially because more characters show up and the vision of how exactly superheroing works in this city got detailed.  (Good news for a certain reader, too-I'm getting P4 and hopefully 2 and 3 as well, so maybe that'll jumpstart my muses again.  It's kind of sad that they don't have any JJBA games for the Vita, but I can cross my fingers and hope.

....I need Persona 4 icons.  I own the series, so maybe I'll screencap a few pics at some point.
Help, the bad puns, they just keep coming.
I was wondering what was up with my writing style at this point, and I figured it out.  I'm doing the Japanese exposition thing (prominent, for example, in Bleach).  So that makes more sense now.
Next 'issue' is where things get really exciting.  We get to see a little more of how all this superhero stuff works in Personatown.
Also a little interlude with Mitsuru and Akihiko, dialogue only, because this world is more than just a few superheroes and it's short and funny and probably will never be more on its own, so why not include it as a little present here?  (It probably won't make sense if you haven't at least seen pictures of Arena, though.)

And this would be why there are two episodes today.  (It would have been much closer to the first if I'd not deleted the internet.  I figured out how to un-delete it, so it's all fine now.  ;)  Man, though, having no internet, it's a crazy world.)
I was just talking with my mates and one of them brought up City of Heroes.  I wasn't happy, but I thought I'd gotten over it.
Considering the emotions I felt again, I was wrong.  After which my muses went nuts.  This took very little time to write.  Resulting in this, Personatown.
It's going to have at least some of all of the Persona series (and possibly Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha, not sure on that part).  All together in one place.  It'll have references, but very little will look exactly like it did in the games.  The style is somewhat new for me, too, but I'm cool with it.
Note: THIS MEANS THAT THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE PERSONA SERIES.  READ AT YOUR OWN RISK SHOULD YOU DISLIKE SPOILERS.
I have plans for Personatown.  Big plans.  But it takes more than just one person to make a city.  I don't care how long later it is, I'm completely fine with it, so comment with anything you feel like.  Go crazy.  If you have any references you'd like me to bring in or must-have villain groups or other superhero or Persona things, feel free to comment all over everything.
