idle thought #573
Jun. 22nd, 2024 10:24 pmDream: Sherlock Holmes. Kind of a Caterina di Sforza situation with a strong female lead who called them in. Someone wanted something from her, one person was murdered, she was being blackmailed, there was an attempted arson, and the thing that was making Holmes go ??? was that these are all very different approaches, so after the third or fourth attempt he decided that there are at least 2 perpetrators, 1 who doesn’t mind bloodshed and another who’s trying less violent means.
Right before they ended up captured, and Holmes had his left elbow shattered. “If it weren’t for the fact that I still have some opium in me, I’d probably be incoherent,” he admits.

“If you like having him around so much, why don’t you marry him?” Jacob grouses, frowning.
“Jacob!” John gasps, shocked. He’s griping because of the forced rest, of course, and Miss Frye’s hardly a shrinking violet, but there are still, on occasion, things he’ll say which should not, probably, be said. In all honesty, that’s entirely possibly why he says them.
“Oh, I don’t know,” Evie answers, grin sly. “I think the good Doctor already has his eye on a different Frye. I wouldn’t want to interpose.”
Jacob starts coughing uncontrollably, cheeks slightly tinted red, and even John feels a slight blush gracing his cheeks.
Evie rolls her eyes, amused. “Jacob Edward Frye, if you thought your flirtations were subtle, I really despair of your skills as a proper Assassin.”

It’s somehow more breathtaking to watch Jacob disappear into a crowd, possibly because he hardly ever bothers, and so it’s that much more impressive to see him vanish, never mind the fact that his sister Evie is so very much better at it. Them doing so simultaneously is quite impressive, and well worth the trip.

Research says that towels existed, just…really flat towels. Still, I headcanon that Jacob takes good care of his clothes, you know, when he’s not getting blood all over them, because he’s the type to take a childish glee from acting as a gentleman knowing what he does about his nightly and daily activities.
(admittedly, this is slightly inspired by a RDJ!holmes fic on Ao3. That one is slightly higher in rating, though…)
This is not canon like Outside the Bounds of Society (ostensibly) is, but you can still kind of read it as a follow-up to that one, and also probably The Forbidden.

A Few Questions

Summary: Dr. John Watson is questioned about the hijacked cab.
Word Count: 275
Rating: Teen
Dr. John Watson is of two minds when it comes to reporting the theft (he wants to know, but it’d poorly repay the man), but then, he wasn’t the only one involved, and his driver is furious, having been thrown off his own cab. The police end up questioning him.
“I got the feeling,” he ends up explaining slowly, “…that our cab thief was helping the police. He mentioned something about a bounty.”
The policeman groans and mutters a name. “Jacob…”
“What was that?” Watson asks, and the man shakes his head.
“Could you give a description of the man?”
He’s hardly liable to forget, though the description he uses is more general. He doesn’t mention, for example, the scars, through the man’s eyebrow and beard—positive identifiers, if ever he saw them. He doesn’t mention the coin on the necklace dangling against the man’s chest. He doesn’t mention that despite the fingerless gloves, the rest of the clothing is at least a good approximation of a gentleman’s, if a little cheaper. He doesn’t mention that he’s well-spoken, or that despite his actions, the man still comes off as well-educated, a gentleman rogue. Brief and incomplete though his description might be, it’s apparently enough for the officer to rub at his head, as if a headache is coming on, thank him for his help, and refuse to ask any more questions.
As far as he can tell, the case is dropped entirely, further lending credence to his theory that this Jacob, for whatever reason, had been telling the truth, but he doesn’t hear of the man again until sheer coincidence once again brings them together.
In Search of Adventure
Sep. 10th, 2020 01:12 pmThere is definitely some PTSD going on here. I did some research and read a couple of threads about PTSD as portrayed in BBC Sherlock (including Mycroft's assertion that John misses it).

Summary: This one is also from 2012. This is a weird steampunk Downey Holmes crossover, in feel and a little in content. Most of it is summary with a little bit of a fight scene (I've got an updated & much better version of the scene in a Sherlock Holmes/Assassin's Creed Syndicate that I have yet to post, yes it's inspired by the movie; I'm slowly realizing that movie was more accurate than I gave it credit for at the time, while Sherlock was worse than I gave it credit for at the time). (For instance, on a reread of the books, Holmes absolutely does know how to box.)
As usual, all notes and summaries within fic are original to that time.
