Jotaro just barely refrains from the groan or muttered yare yare daze when his uncle calls and tells him that he’s in America. “You forgot to email me about your flight.”
Josuke laughs nervously, like when he usually does when he’s worried about how Jotaro is going to react about something. For some reason. Like Jotaro wouldn’t actually voice it if he was actually mad. “Eh, last minute shift change. I didn’t want to bother you. It’s all right; I’ll just get a cab out—”
“I don’t think you can.” Jotaro gets the feeling he’d been a little too harsh and abrupt as his uncle goes quiet as he tries again. “I can come get you. It’s not a bother.” Well, it is slightly, but it’s better than just leaving him out there, and Josuke could make himself useful, assuming even hearing about what’s going on doesn’t send him on an immediate plane flight back.
“...Jotaro-san? You...weren’t kidding about the whole ‘strange’ thing, were you? Why won’t a cab drive me out there?” His instincts are still good. Jotaro will give him that.
Jotaro sighs internally. He’d forgotten his uncle is still maybe a bit scared of the supernatural, with courage only for the mundane criminals. Jotaro barely manages, again, despite the sleep deprivation, not to do so out loud. “Officially? Freak localized sandstorm.” At least they hadn’t attempted to use their favorite ‘gangs on PCP’ explanation for it this time. “Unofficially? Mummies.”
Josuke’s voice jumps a couple octaves. “Mummies. Like, ‘I will curse you if you disturb my resting place’ mummies? Those mummies?”
Jotaro grunts some vague agreement. “I did mention we could find some other time to visit you. Maybe Golden Week. They don’t have that in America, so flights are cheap.”
“I…” Josuke swallows and tries to wrap his head around this. “...Is this just an American thing?” At least he sounds a little more bewildered than terrified at the moment.
“Sunnydale. So far they’re no match for Star Platinum.” He’s heard stories about Florida and New Orleans, among other places, but he has very little inclination to travel the entirety of the American continent with no real point.
“Wait, you’re fighting them, like Ghostbusters? That’s neat!” The enthusiasm in his uncle’s voice takes Jotaro by surprise. “I guess if you’re doing that, you’ve got protections that work against curses and stuff, so count me in.”
“It is what Buffy does.” Had he mentioned her new name? He thinks so, in one of his emails, but there’s been so much going on it’s become a bit of a blur. “I help sometimes.” He’d like to help more often, but someone has to pay for the house, especially when he’s considering how to help some of them, like Buffy’s friend Xander.
He considers. “It will be safe to explore as long as you don’t wander off too far and you have your phone with you.”
“I do have my Stand!” Josuke protests. Once again Jotaro marvels at how quickly his uncle’s mood swings.
Jotaro leans back in his chair, fiddling with his hat and attempting to take deeper breaths. He’d gotten better at dealing with this kind of thing, but he’s exhausted so his nerves are slightly frayed. He’s highly considering just letting Star Platinum do most of the driving, just in case he falls asleep. “Los Angeles is not affected now. But I don’t want to leave for too long, so being able to pick you up without too much work would be appreciated.”
“Oh. Right, sorry.” At least unlike his father, Josuke was much more adept at picking up clues. “I did promise some souvenirs for everyone back home, so maybe I’ll go look at some of the shops for some starters. This is a pretty big airport, so I might find something.”
“Good luck,” Jotaro responds, hanging up and running a hand over his face, his Stand appearing without him consciously wishing for it, looking him over anxiously. Punching himself in the face with Star would wake him up effectively, but probably not be very useful for actually making him a functional driver. He’d consider sending Giles instead, but even with the ‘he’s the one with the pompadour’, it’d probably be more difficult for them to find each other, and Giles is needed for research on the enemy in any case. Like it or not, he is the one more suited for this, though he should probably let Buffy know he’s leaving this time so she doesn’t automatically assume he has either abandoned her or gotten hurt or captured.
