In Buffy’s experience, the aftermath is always the worst. Saving the day, Slaying the baddie, rescuing people, stopping the next apocalypsus? That’s the easy part. What comes after is your boyfriend losing his soul and becoming your personal nemesis or losing him, again, just because your friend’s belief in you is pretty high but doesn’t extend that far, or them being judgmental because she couldn’t deal, or dealing with being alive after being in heaven, or...just. Even more things she doesn’t want to think about.
Here, it’s less bad. They’re probably mostly terrible people, given where they work, but she can’t help but feel sorry for them anyway, which is probably a sign that she’s matured slightly. Not that she’s going to tell Giles that, because the next thing you know he’ll start expecting things from her and that’ll throw her whole game off. She’d wanted to think it was all fine, but she’d definitely overreacted after the thing with Riley, and she can’t even apologize for that.
But it’s still a thing here, too. Shooting out deadly lights with, essentially, a powerful water gun? Fun. Punching out windows? Fun. Ticking off the Wolfram & Hart people? Also fun.
Wandering through and seeing all the bodies, though? Not great. Seeing all the people worry or faces crumple when she brings out the bodies? Even worse. She can heal the human ones, and she’s even gotten a few practical tips from Robin, who’s cool and understands the kind of advice that helps her figure out how physical skills work. It’s probably that he’s a warrior, too, so he gets how to actually give her helpful instructions, maybe. That, or he’s just had practice. She hadn’t expected most of the people here to actually care, given what she’d heard about the backstabbing, and yeah, absolutely, there are people who are faking caring, here. Buffy can tell. She used to be part of the shallow cheerleader crowd. She knows what that’s like, and not all of them are so good about pretending.
It’s imperfect, and a lot of it seems to be for morale. Dorothy might act like a kindly old grandma, but she’s a shrewd lady and a lot of that seems to be to try to get loyalty, and it seems like she’s inspired at least a decent amount of her employees to follow her example, even if it’s just paying lip service or whatever to the whole idea. But a lot more of these people do seem to care about their coworkers, or at least want to get revenge.
That’s not happening. At least, not for a bit, and Buffy finds the idea of sharing the mission of tracking down this scumbag with Wolfram & Hart uncomfortable. Fortunately, the rest seem to agree. Though given what she’d been saying before they were interrupted, it doesn’t seem like Dorothy will go along with it and will start throwing support their way anyway.
Xander’s grandfather (as weird as that is to think every single time) and the demon he’s working with both look exhausted, but neither of them seems to want to give up, which is...admirable, in a way, but it’s also going to set him up for despair at some point if he finds someone he just can’t heal. Then again, he’s been going so long surely he has, so maybe he’s just being really compassionate and thorough. He’s probably a better guy than her, probably, because even if she is sympathetic and got roped into carrying more people to the guy to save, she still doesn’t think she’d go that far.
Also, he’d let the scumbag get away. It’s not Severin, even though this is absolutely something that he would do. Josuke’s description confirms that much, because the two look nothing alike and it happens to be someone who’s still alive. It’s the ambulance guy, but why it’s the ambulance guy and what the hell he was doing in Mexico spying on them are anyone’s guess, really.
She’s also being strangely up-front, for a higher-up at an evil soul-sucking corporation, but then, she’d probably worked out that that’s the best way to get results. Which is unfortunately an accurate assessment of the situation. Damn them.
She’s holding her damage assessment there right in front of them. And one of the security guys—the human one, it looks like—runs up and holds out a camera for them to look at. Dorothy doesn’t try to hide it from them; if anything she’s displaying it so they can see. “Given the pictures Airo took, Dr. Kujo thinks he had a bunch of glassware of titanium tetrachloride which broke from the force of the sprinkler system and formed acid and toxic gas in the records room. As you can see, a lot of our records were probably irreversibly damaged, and anyone going in and saving the rest, given our resources, will be difficult.”
“How are our resurrection efforts going?” Oh, right, because you’re literally signing away your soul with the employment contract.
“Badly. We’re probably down on employees for the time being. We might get some transfers.” They both make a face, probably because the attitude she’s tried hard to cultivate, but she might not get a choice, there. “There’s a hold-up after the events with Angel last year, so it’s going based on seniority and time, neither of which apply here. Unfortunately.” Well, Angel would’ve been happy to hear that, at least. It’d been dangerous and difficult and they’d barely made a dent in the actual army Wolfram & Hart had sent, but even getting in the way of the everyday functioning of the firm is a pretty impressive achievement.
“We can’t give you a name, unfortunately.” Santiago’s skin is all raw and looks like it’s just freshly healed, but she doesn’t even wince as she holds the clipboard. Her stance is slightly awkward, like she’s uncomfortable, but most people probably wouldn’t even notice. “Anyone who worked closely with the man was caught up in the thick of it. We may never know for certain, but it seems like he was using differently diluted holy water per floor. The basement and first floor were the worst.”
“Like the bastard was testing effectiveness?” Jotaro asks. She doesn’t think he’d troll them by stopping time, so he probably just snuck up on them, but that’s mostly just a guess.
“Well, that’s definitely possible.” Santiago sighs, adjusting her glasses, and continues. “That’s not probably the only reason, though. We canceled a staff meeting in order to meet with you. It was supposed to take place in one of the ground floor boardrooms.”
“And if it was on the schedule, ‘Geoffrey’ would know that, too.” He puts his hands in his pockets, frowning.
“What are you thinking, Jotaro?” Kakyoin asks. He shakes his head. Probably doesn’t want to share anything until he’s sure.
Dorothy doesn’t have the same worry, but she speaks up, voice fairly confident despite her words. “I do have a theory as to how and why he was able to sign the contract, as well as why it had less hold on him than it should have. I believe that if it was an alias he used often, it would possibly have enough significance to him to fool the magical requirements, while simultaneously having less hold than his real name. And if it’s an alias he used often, it might even be important enough for him to protect.”
It’s not much, but it is something to go on.
