Okay, so yeah, maybe this won’t directly lead to a break when it comes to dealing with Wolfram & Hart, and maybe he’s gotten a bit off track, but if this becomes a longer investigation somehow it always helps to have somebody on the inside, and the service people tend to be overlooked unfairly. They’re not only necessary for the operations of pretty much everywhere, but they also tend to know things and notice things, and they also tend to be a pretty good clue to the state of a company. If they are really loyal, usually it means they’re being treated well, unless they’re actually in a cult of some kind. If they, like Imogen, aren’t just turning him away immediately, that’s not such a great sign for it as a workplace.
He’s not just making excuses, either, even though Imogen is really cute and he hates how accurate Josie-chan had been. Sure, she’d just been teasing him, because anyone who didn’t know her would think she can never take anything seriously, but the carefree attitude is just how she deals with the world, even since she was young. But she’d been supportive, too; she genuinely wanted him to be happy, and it’s not like he’d be replacing Aife, not after all these years.
She wants to go to college, even though she’d be the first in her extended family to do so (he suspects that by that, she means ‘the first of her species’, but a demon just coming to Earth and wanting to do something so normal like get an education is kinda adorable, actually, especially with how earnest and excited she gets about it. And the coffee she makes is delicious, and no, he’s not just saying that. Sure, he is the kind to be polite, but he’d say something nice and be done.
But he’s not counting on any immediate results. He hadn’t really had a plan to begin with, just didn’t want to just go along with everything he’d been told.
He hasn’t really seen much. They haven’t really had later arrivals, which might mean their hours are really strict, or maybe at some point they’d noticed he wasn’t where he was meant to be and warned any latecomers to stay away. It’s not too dissimilar to when companies panic about inspections, or so some of Josuke’s friends tell him.
There is security in the lobby now, visible but just out of sight, probably because they’re trying not to intimidate him out of giving away something vital, but also maybe as a message to Imogen, which is terrible and he really wants to help protect her if he can, but he’s not sure how to even go about doing that. Ordering two coffees helps diffuse suspicions a little, hopefully, even if he’s starting to feel like he’s going to have to ask for directions to the public restrooms with the caffeine.
Other than that, they’ve done a really good job at decorating and otherwise acting like this is a completely normal building. Better than some companies he’s dealt with in Japan, but then, if they’re demons, they’ve probably had a lot more practice in this. Although it’s a little less common that someone hasn’t come over to escort him back to where he’s supposed to be. Maybe because he’s actually somewhere open to the public rather than poking in the back rooms, so it’s okay.
He’s about to give up, possibly, or consider trying to sneak into somewhere only the employees are supposed to be when he just happens to glance over as the elevator doors open. The man who steps out, laughing and promising the job he did was “quite thorough”, is strangely familiar, although he didn’t happen to be in the unexpectedly universal janitor’s outfit the last time Josuke had seen him. It takes him a moment, the exact sort of process that runs through your mind if you run into a coworker at the movies or an old teacher at the grocery store. You know you’ve seen the person before, but you can’t quite place them at first, and sometimes you can even have a whole conversation without realizing how you know them.
All right, time for his police training. When common sense isn’t doing the trick, go back to the basics. Tanned, pinkish-purple hair, tanned, with friendly hawk’s eyes behind pince-nez glasses. At least, the expression starts out friendly, but when his eyes meet Josuke’s, he freezes, and it’s something about seeing both that makes him realize the connection.
The friendly demeanor, the slight panic? That’s Geoffrey the medic, but that’s not a medic’s uniform, and suddenly becoming a janitor doesn’t make sense as a career move in such a short amount of time unless he’s undercover. And he’d been saying goodbye to people who evidently recognized him, so this isn’t a new thing. They’ve seen him before. And maybe he really is working for the Speedwagon Foundation; they absolutely would have a good reason to want to have someone keeping an eye on these guys, but there’s no reason for him to not act cool and greet him and pass along a message, because unauthorized or not, they’d be on the same team, here.
Still, there’s only one way to test the waters. He calls out, raising a hand in greeting. “Yo, Geoffrey, wasn’t it? How’s it going?”
And in response, “Geoffrey”, if that even is his name, turns like he doesn’t hear and heads out the fire exit right over there near the elevators. Except the alarm doesn’t go off, which isn’t exactly great. He’s got a really bad feeling about this. Josuke turns to Imogen, smiling and trying not to worry her too much. “Be careful, okay? And I hope I don’t get you in any trouble.
And then he breaks into a run, chasing the guy even as he pulls out the phone, dialing Jotaro-san, hitting the speakerphone without even glancing and dropping it into his pocket so he has his hands free. He tries to call out Crazy D, but can’t—something’s wrong. A Stand, maybe, but then he remembers the contract. Damn it, he hadn’t wanted to sign the thing! He doesn’t want to stall and lose the guy, though. He’s just gonna have to keep on him and hope he notices something he can use to improvise or that Jotaro-san can take care of it, somehow. “Jotaro-san, sorry to interrupt.” And then he’s out that same door, and no alarm again. At least that hairstyle’s pretty distinctive, so he hasn’t lost him just yet.
