Note: HERE THERE PROBABLY BE BUFFY/JJBA SPOILERS
It'd be easy to get caught up in it all. Josie had heard all of the stories about Ojiisan's adventures, most of them twice, and the ones he was too old to remember to tell, Shizuka or the Speedwagon Foundation was there to fill in the blanks. Of course, most of them were an exaggeration. Dad just laughs and shakes his head. Cousin Jotaro glares. But it's the truth. Storytelling like this, it's built for tall tales.
But there's always a grain of the truth in the heart of the story. Most of the stories were from her namesake, despite great-uncle Speedwagon and his employees going on more of these kinds of trips, but then, he'd always had the heart of a storyteller, and the others are more, uh, what's the word. Modest? She'll go with that. They don't see themselves as the heroes of the tale, so they downplay themselves and their achievements, something that always drove Josephine up the wall, particularly when she thought Mercia was just some snooping busybody assigned to keep an eye on her, but, well. She'd proven herself a bunch of times over, and anyway thinking of her hurt too much, so she was trying not to do it, really. If she was lying, she'd say it's because they can't afford to be distracted, not now, not with everything so close. With lives on the line. If she's being honest, it's because she sucks at this grief thing and doesn't know what to do with it, how to act. Facing this kind of thing always bugs her. She'd rather run away and bury her head in sand than actually acknowledge loss. Maybe that started with her mom, who knows.
But the lie isn't wrong either, and having her head all in the clouds might just get someone killed, so she needs to get her act together already. At least Cousin Jotaro's having as much trouble with it as she is, though you wouldn't know it to look at him. Not unless you knew him.
Point is, she's always, always wanted to head to one of these places, one of these ancient, gloomy tombs, a buried secret pyramid under a tourist spot in Mexico, how cool is that. She actually manages to find an Indiana Jones style hat and sticks it on, waggling her eyebrows dramatically when Buffy looks questioning. She laughs, which is good, because come on, they're not going to get anywhere if their morale is in the gutters. If she's really, really lucky, there will be traps everywhere and maybe even some treasure-not that that's what they're there for, but it's the spirit of the thing. She'd begged and begged to be put on one of the Foundation's expeditions, and it turned out the only one going was the one to Russia, and, well. They all knew how that one turned out. Nowhere near enough ancient ruins or carved curses, way too many traumatic near-death experiences, and the worry about a friend dying kind of puts a damper on the whole adrenaline rush thing.
She won’t get to enjoy herself completely this time, either. The circumstances, to put it mildly, well. They suck. It’s kind of ruining the experience, and her mood. She’s trying not to think about Giles’ revelations. But the more she tries not to think about it, the more they crowd in, unwanted.
Cousin Jotaro would find this kind of place interesting, if he wasn’t worrying about his bad feeling just as much as she’s worrying about hers—which is even worse, because the two of them having a bad feeling about the same thing at the same time? Yeah, no, time to duck and cover. But he’s generally more of a biology nerd, so other than a polite interest, which is more than he’d give most things, it’s not really his deal.
Papa’s trying not to show it, but he’s a little on edge, too. That’s not usually his deal, which might make her even more paranoid. It’d taken a teasing comment from Okuyasu to work out what all of that was about. Apparently he’s extremely worried about the possibility of mummies or curses, but is trying very hard not to let on so as not to spoil his kewl image. It’s kind of funny, really, but then, he’s kind of always been this way. She’d always been pretty sure he’d loved her, but had proof the moment he actually accompanied her to the Halloween event at Tokyo Disney Resort, or joined in the one time that she and her friends tried to play the Gathering of a Hundred Ghost Stories (she’s pretty sure the tale he tried to tell was a variation on Aunt Reimi’s story, the nerd), all while trying not to look like the giant fraidy cat he is.
Buffy—Buffy’s in full action mode. Josie approves, and she’s proud to stand alongside her in battle, even if her brain still can’t quite wrap itself around the whole ‘friend of my son’ thing.
Before she can get any more distracted by her thoughts, they land—and score, take that, family curse! Though maybe it’s her papa that’s good luck on these things. She’s never heard of him having any plane trouble ever, and sure, he might not take as many planes, but still, it’s not like he never takes any. They head back to New York for the family reunion every year, after all.
And then she exits the plane, and oh man that’s better than that trenchcoat she’d begged Papa to get her. Cugino Giorno is utterly unfair. Because that is an honest-to-goodness real life dragon, scales a polished obsidian in the light. And he’s just...hanging out leaning against that bulky frame, picture-perfect casual. As staging goes, he gets a ten out of ten and also a pout, because she absolutely wants a dragon (seriously, no plane curse could touch a dragon, but also, the sheer awesomeness of dragon) and probably will not be getting one, for reasons including but not limited to a lack of space and exotic animal laws and also, yeah, huh, where is she supposed to be living after all of this, and would Johan actually want to come live with her—
Cart before the horse, Josie.
“You waited?” Cousin Jotaro rumbles. He actually might be a little annoyed by that choice.
Giorno simply inclines his head, breathes in and out deeply, leash tight on his anger. “From what I sensed, I felt I should wait. Despite my lack of inclination to do so.” He glances past to her, and then to Buffy, genuine smile making an appearance. “It is good to see you all.”
And then Buffy continues to live up to Josephine’s high expectations, because she simply lifts the sword to her shoulders and states in a voice that admits no argument, “Let’s do this thing.”
