When Darling glances over, trying to catch her breath, she realizes the interruption was not who she thought. She’d expected it to be Kukulkan, maybe, come with some dire news about whatever he’d been investigating, no matter how unlikely that appeared. Maybe one of Balam’s ‘scouts’, with similar intention. And though she hadn’t expected it, she wished it, Jojo with his bright smile and absolute lack of fear, Mr. Speedwagon’s presence obvious with just the shadow of his hat, scowling though he’s actually happy to see all of them alive and in one piece.
In the end, it is none of these, and her hopes are dashed once again. No matter how irrational, though, she’ll still cling to them, in this place of death, because besides her friends, they’re the only things she has left. In the end, it’s actually one of Lord Kisin’s dogs, swaying on its feet, tongue lolling, as if it had run a marathon to be here.
The dog is actually panting, like it’s a normal dog, like it’s alive. And this time, Darling is shocked to learn, it actually speaks to them all, not simply to Lord Kisin. She’d thought, maybe, that it didn’t speak English, or only he could understand it, but that’s not the case at all. “There is no more time.”
Lord Kisin accepts the outcome rather easily. “Ah, well.” The friendly good humor is back. Darling doesn’t trust it.
Lord Akan follows suit, smiling and lifting his flask in a sort of drunkard’s salute to them. “To a tie,” he announces, drinking. His head looks like it’s better, now. “Two-two. Good numbers for such a short game.”
The other Lords of Death don’t seem as inclined to follow the lead of their leaders, even if they probably have no say in things. Jacawitz’s voice is loud and shrill above them all. Awilix, meanwhile, does a little victory dance, grinning in delight, and even Balam looks as relieved as a black jaguar without humanoid features can.
Lord Kisin speaks louder, somehow drowning out the rest. “I would, of course, love to have finished the match, but I suppose it is as it must be. Go, in our behalf, and remove Xibalba from this human’s pesky insolence.” Suddenly, his eyes are not smiling, and the menace seeps from his voice. “Make him pay.”
And as easy as flicking a switch, the menace disappears once more. “I do hope you enjoyed our hospitality. Feel free to return at any time. I know some will be dying to see you again.” Everyone carefully does not look at Jacawitz practically vibrating in anger where he sits in the stands.
“Like hell we will,” von Stroheim mutters under her breath. They’re all carefully ignoring that, too, mostly probably because they don’t have time to get into more contests over vague insults.
“Use caution. The situation may not be as it appears,” Balam warns, nuzzling her affectionately but keeping wary eyes on the rest in case they try anything.
To show some respect before they try to make their escape, Darling hastily bows. “Thank you! Goodbye!”
But, of course, the Lords of Death aren’t finished yet. “Buluc Chabtan. Awilix. Accompany them, and ensure the vengeance of Xibalba is not soon forgotten.”
“Look forward to fighting alongside such warriors,” the Lord of War announces with a grin, practically running to their side, hoisting the spear once again like it’s nothing. Darling winces a little and looks away. She hadn’t caught much of a glimpse earlier, mostly because, well, at first he’d been too far away, and then they’d been moving too fast, but there’s still a bit of a hole in his chest and she thinks she can catch a glimpse of things she probably isn’t supposed to be seeing when someone’s alive. Not that she’d really like to see that kind of stuff when someone’s dead, either…
The Queen of the Night nods approvingly, stretching, catlike. “You’ll enjoy it, I’m sure. They’re a lot of fun,” she promises, like the other would disagree. Although she’s half wondering if sending the Lady of Death is yet another test of some sort, given that he’d started off her introduction by calling her a traitor.
The Captain looks like she wants to protest the decision, but knows they don’t have the time for this and they do actually have a reason to be allies, if only temporary ones. “Fine. Follow my lead.”
Buluc Chabtan actually bows...but then, he’d had a speech about how pride didn’t bother him, didn’t he? Unlike the others, who immediately start protesting. Darling suspects that’s because a human ordering one of them around reflects on the others. Lord Kisin raises a hand, though, and every single one of his dogs starts howling in unison, drowning out any complaints the others have to voice. Lord Akan smiles, looking eerily reminiscent to some of the old grandpas Darling had seen on the Underground or buses, but he still has the surprising athletic skill he’d shown before as he throws a flask in an extremely accurate arc at the Lord of War, which he catches easily. The bones on Lord Akan’s hand look like they crack a little as he waves them on, and Mr. Brown bows before following Awilix’s lead as she walks them back through the opposite archway.
She wants to ask that they heal Jacawitz, if anyone would even hear them over the racket, because it makes her stomach turn a little, just like Buluc Chabtan’s wounds, even if he’s their enemy and tried to kill them. She wants to, but she doesn’t. He’d just try to kill them again anyway, and wouldn’t appreciate it, but she knows those are just excuses to try to make her feel better. The real truth is that they don’t have time for this. They didn’t really have time for any of this delay, but they were forced to go through it anyway, and now that they have they don’t have any time to lose, especially when such a delay could only make things worse when Jacawitz attacks them once he regains full health, and that’s if he doesn’t fight the hamon healing, which is highly unlikely. If hamon, even healing hamon, isn’t fatal for those that live in Xibalba. But they’re out of the room and the chance to even say something is lost.
