Chapter Summary: continuing my music + character agenda; yosuke is possibly neurodivergent in this one. also possibly on the ace spectrum. and with a small dose of his usual anxiety/depression/self-hatred.

They manage a single attempt into the Castle, during which Yosuke messes with his playlist a little too long and Chie runs off and anyway it’s this huge mess. He makes a poor showing of himself, and desperate, decides to go with his go-to option, praying no one will notice or at least not ask. He’s got a few studying songs, and songs to play before and after tests, and when he’s really having trouble concentrating he just plays the same one for a few hours. The music keeps him focused and the anxiety at bay. With any luck, it’ll help in the TV too, and he can name the playlist TV and no one would even question it because, honestly, why would they? It’s not like he’s going to listen to them anywhere else, because the association will be too strong and as cool as it is being a hero with a superpower saving people, he hasn’t forgotten that this is deadly serious, emphasis on the dead. It’s easy to forget when they’re not there, but when they are, there’s a creeping unease through his mind that even Jiraiya doesn’t keep at bay. The others don’t seem to notice, so he has to do his best to keep that smile and cheer up. He can do that for them even if he’s relatively useless with other stuff. Maybe he’s the one that messed up not having a dungeon of his own…but then, it should also be affecting Chie. Hmm. At least he has a healing spell. That’s useful at least.
So he finds a song for the safe area, the Backlot, with lyrics, because hey, he’s not going to have issues misunderstanding commands that could get people killed there, and some instrumental piece for the Castle. He spends way too long on it, honestly, and lack of sleep might be worse than not being prepared, but this feels important.
Souji’s impressed, though, and so is he, even if he’s not gonna say so, because that’ll just look lame. He just blusters something about having his head in the game this time to that questioning grey eyebrow and hopes that’s good enough.
It was probably too much to hope for, though, but man…Souji is something else. Because he notices and waits patiently, if a little annoyed, because of course he can’t keep his mouth shut and the bathhouse is seriously weirding him out and he talks a good game and honestly wants someone that close but the focus on sex is starting to get weird. ‘Course, they’re all teenagers; of course that’s a theme, but at the same time, his only really talked about Saki and having a crush. Does that mean he’s a kid? That he’s not mature enough? Yukiko’s Shadow had mentioned underwear, but other than that she’d been pretty tame. Does that mean guys who like guys are a little more focused, or whatever? Wait, no, duh, of course they are; it’s hard enough for straight guys to get laid, or even get a date, or maybe that’s just him. Again. Are they all—argh, he’s gotta stop thinking about this. Just ‘cause he’s a loser doesn’t mean he’s gotta be a burden too and hold them all up like this. He finally just pulls in a track with a good beat as a placeholder, because if the pattern holds they’ll be back and he’ll be able to pick out a better, more fitting one when he’s got longer to think about it.
