well, we're into the spookiest month now... have the first part of a completely random two-parter pilot that probably won't go anywhere!
Date has been changed because seriously, unless Beyond's gone back to looking like whatever he did before he'd attempted the LABB murder cases, I highly doubt Light would forget if the face of one of the 'criminals' he judged was the face of L.
Main Points:
Death Note AU
Chapter Summary: Light assumes he's removed all obstacles on Kira's path to godhood, but 'N' calls to share another inconvenient truth. It seems Kira's justice might, in fact, be imperfect.
Word Count: 1078
Rating: Teen
As usual, the voice is utterly unconcerned behind the voice changer. “Not as of yet. It occurred to me that there was something else of significance I should pass along without delay. It was buried in the notes about the case, and in any event we have finished with our own interrogations on the matter.”
What now. Light almost doesn’t want to ask. N never brings good news. But if it’s a problem, he’d rather know he has to deal with the problem than be entirely unaware. “Well, we’ll take any lead we can find. What is it?”
“We’ve reviewed the footage.” It’s galling that it sounds like N is only paying half attention to the situation, even though it’s entirely unlikely. It’s probably a ploy to make him react. “When ‘shinigami’ were mentioned, before one had even appeared, L reacted badly.”
This is leading somewhere, Light reminds himself..
"I found that odd at the time, but...are you trying to say there was more to it than superstition?" Of course, it had mostly been odd because L hadn't seen a shinigami before him at the time. There had just been the mention of the Eyes.
"Yes." Somehow, that bland statement is worse than any other sort of confirmation. "You see, L had previously been told of the existence of Shinigami Eyes. He just hadn't believed it to be true. Mmm, though I suppose without proof of the existence of the supernatural, it would be a far-fetched story indeed."
Light's mind is racing. Ryuk had said that Death Notes had previously fallen into the human world, so maybe L had come into contact with one of those people, who had let slip about the Eyes but not the notebook? "Who had told him?"
"I'm getting to that part," N scolds. "The one who knew the information was also the only known person to have survived Kira." Ryuk just starts laughing in the background, making the rest of the team members flinch. Since N can't hear him, though, Light tries to tune him out and listen to the soft voice over the speakerphone. "Of course, this is mere supposition on our part, as it's not like a notebook of death leaves traces for forensics to find, but the timing of the heart attack is more than suspect, and none of the doctors can find any reason for the attack. What's more, an examination after the fact suggests that his heart is still in perfect health, while in a normal heart attack, damage to the heart leads to the increased likelihood of subsequent heart attacks. As nothing like that was found, there's a 73% chance the heart attack was supernatural in origin. While you cannot speak to the doctors, who wish to remain anonymous, you may review all the evidence as you see fit."
Light feels himself go a little cold--no, keep it together, you can't let them see how rattled you are that one of the judged has managed to slip away--for the time being anyway. "Someone survived Kira? Could he be Kira himself?"
"The thought had crossed my mind, but he was in captivity for far longer than thirteen days and had not written anything. He claims he was born with the Shinigami Eyes, and no Death Note was found in his possession or among his belongings. All files relevant to his case should be sent over now." Light's about to argue that, but the ding of the email suggests that it's finally arrived. "I would advise you take care when handling him. He's rather dangerous, though indicated he has some interest in cooperating with your investigation."
"D-dangerous?" Matsuda stammers, and it's all Light can do not to roll his eyes.
"He is the culprit behind the Los Angeles Wara Ningyo Murders," N explains blandly, and Light's jaw clenches. From what he remembers of the case, those were fairly gruesome deaths. The thought that an evildoer like that is escaping his perfect justice...
"That occurred in 2002, though, right?" Light's quickly scanning the files in the email while he still has the irritating N on the line. "Given this timing, though...October of 2004, that would be the Yotsuba Kira, right? Why did it take so long?"
"Obtaining the names of the Wammy's children is a difficult prospect, to say the least. Similarly, all photographs taken were destroyed. During the time the Yotsuba Kira was killing, however, one of the doctors came out as a Kira supporter and leaked the information for our culprit, as well as several other suspects and criminals in custody, though fortunately the names of the rest of us were not in the same system." N pauses, as if paying attention to something else on his end, again, then asks, "Are there any more questions for now? I've arranged a date and time to pick up this individual, and took the liberty of including that in the email."
N doesn't just get to state something like that and then act like it's nothing. "This Mello person joined the mafia, and now you're saying there was a serial murderer also from your orphanage? Are you sure there's nothing you're keeping from me, N? Like maybe the possibility that you're actually Kira? Because from what I can see, Ryuzaki was the only success story."
"Thus far," N corrects, softly but firmly. "Not everyone can handle the pressure." And with that, he ends the call. Light's going to count it as getting under N's skin and a victory, even if he can't exactly prove it.
"Hey, Light, there's nothing in the place of a name in this file," Aizawa points out, and Light nods.
"I'd noticed the same thing. It looks like they're still taking precautions to try to ensure he survives, though if they're right, they might not even be necessary." And Kira would just love to know how he managed that. "Do you know anything about this, Shinigami?"
Light's been acquainted with Ryuk long enough to be able to place his 'highly entertained' expression, though at least he's not going back into another laughing fit. "Never heard of it happening. I can't exactly go back to the Shinigami Realm yet to ask around." Useless as always.

Light has to remind himself not to growl at the fact that they’re getting another call from this N person. To L, he should be an asset, not an obstacle. “N, hello. Do you have anything else on Mello?”
As usual, the voice is utterly unconcerned behind the voice changer. “Not as of yet. It occurred to me that there was something else of significance I should pass along without delay.
