“So, how do you go from punching each other to kissing?” she asks bluntly as she sits, and…he continues playing with his phone. Trying to come up with a proper response, probably.
“I…at first we were just two kids frustrated with our lives, but later on…” He finally sets down the phone. “I think, in a weird way, we might have been flirting. Matsugane-san definitely thought so, if his teasing meant anything.” His voice is quieter, upset, but there’s a good reason for that.
“You’re both weird,” Saori states bluntly, and in response Yagami laughs weakly.
“Well, you’re not wrong,” he responds, rubbing at the back of his head. “The thing is, he can be scary, but he’s more like a big growly teddy bear.”
She can’t help the slight smirk. “Now I get it. This has to do with your UFO Catcher obsession, doesn’t it?”
“Hey!” Yagami protests, blushing, and Saori just chuckles.
Then she crosses her arms, leaning forward and putting on the face that gets the truth out of clients. “You were interested in Mafuyu, right? I wasn’t wasting my time?”
Yagami makes a strangled noise, but he chuckles too. “See, there’s a reason I talk to you about this stuff.” He gathers his thoughts. “I do like her, yeah, but…I can’t be the me that she wants me to be.” He pauses and makes a face. “That sounded really dumb.”
“It did a bit, but…” Saori’s thoughtful. He sounds regretful, but firm. There will always be attraction there, but he’s pretty stubborn, too. “Changing a little for someone you love isn’t too bad, as long as it’s things you don’t mind changing.”
“I wasn’t bad at being a lawyer, but—I’m actually enjoying this detective thing. Genda-sensei isn’t wrong about my cases, and it’s definitely less secure, but I like the freedom, and I like working with Kaito-san.” This, he sounds sure on. And happy for the first time since the Terasawa thing.
“And Mafuyu’s upset about it.” She’s heard that first-hand often enough.
“Kaito doesn’t judge me because he’s screwed up just as badly as me. He still makes me want to be better, even though sometimes we drive each other to do dumber shit. But he still…” His voice trails off, unsure. He wasn’t this hesitant until that big case. She’s not sure whether the change is for the better or for the worse. “He doesn’t like to seem like it, but he does worry about me, and look after me.”
Saori narrows her eyes, taking in his expression. “Are you saying he’s motherly?”
Yagami splutters for a good minute, even maybe blushing a little, and she watches smugly, merely taking another sip of her shake.
“Never say that in his presence. Knowing him, he’s going to pull something stupid the second he hears that.” It’s a good save, she’ll give him that.
Mafuyu’s…she wouldn’t say her friend’s not supportive, but she’s not exactly the caretaker type. It’s not something Saori looks for herself, but she can see why such a clueless, careless type like Yagami would. (She’s being a bit unfair; he’s not like that all the time and can actually be pretty observant and driven when he puts his mind to it, but he can be, between his probable PTSD and general personality.)
And Mafuyu’s not the type to bend. Kaito-san and Yagami have adapted themselves to each other with ease. They work together as a pretty good team; she’s seen that firsthand.
“Would you like Mafuyu more if she could fight?” she wonders out loud, and he’s definitely lightly blushing now.
“It’s not a matter of like…” he mutters, and that makes her feel a little better. “Even if we like each other, that doesn’t mean it works out.”
“I suppose you see enough of that in your work,” she supposes, and the look in his eyes says ‘yes’ even if he doesn’t answer out loud.
He sighs, fidgeting, and she can tell he’s itching for a smoke. Either he’s out, or close to it, and stringing it out.
“Like I said, Kaito’s the one who kissed me.” He’s at least a little quiet and discreet when he mentions it. “I’d been wondering if I’d been just…seeing things. What I wanted to see. But no, he really…” A deep breath. “He really cares.”
“And you?” she asks, because she does have an idea from all the things he hasn’t said, but there are things that he does need to say, too.
He flinches. “He asked me something pretty similar. I just—” Wow, this has got to be pretty serious. “I do like him. I’m just…I guess I’m scared. Sometimes I feel like I’m bad luck. People close to me…even Shintani-senpai…Kaito-san can take care of himself, but I still can’t shake this feeling. And I’m selfish, and I really don’t know what I’m doing…”
She lets Yagami ramble until he’s got all of his initial issues out of his head and sighs. “You’re panicking because you’re clueless, right?” She ignores the outraged ‘hey!’ “You’re aware that I’m not any more an expert on relationships than you are, right?”
“I don’t have anyone else to ask,” he states flatly, and they’re both aware that that’s kind of sad.
“Well, I do know something.” It’s hard, but. If he wanted easy advice, he wouldn’t have come to her. “I’m not the person you should be talking to about this. You should tell Kaito-san.”
“He’s just going to make a joke—” Yagami starts, and she isn’t about to hear his excuses.
“He does care about you. Even if he doesn’t like to show it, because he thinks it’ll ruin his image, if something’s bothering you he will care.” She hasn’t seen the two of them together much, but she can tell at least that much.
He doesn’t respond to that one.
“Sooner or later, you will have to have a serious conversation about the relationship. Particularly if you keep getting scared. I wouldn’t know firsthand but I think a relationship where you can’t have serious conversations wouldn’t last.” That’s more going off of what she knows about clients, but she’s pretty sure it still applies.
He holds a hand to his face, thoughtful, then reaches out. “Ow!” Yagami pulls his hand back, pouting like a child, and Saori’s definitely laughing on the inside.
“I’m only going to let you steal from my plate if you’ll treat me to some cheesecake,” she negotiates. Sure, asking Yagami to pay for anything when he’s pretty broke is a bit mean, but he steals his fair share when they do manage to go out to eat together, so it’s just an average give-and-take friend situation.
The detective pretends to think about it for a bit, eventually agreeing, “That sounds fair,” but they both know he was going to agree anyway.

Yagami’s fiddling with his phone when she appears. He looks almost pathetically happy to see her.
