Yuki only teases Majima-san because if she didn’t she’d be too scared of him to breathe.
Oh, he’s gentle enough with the girls, if you can call being a jerk gentle. Whenever there’s business, he’s the very picture of a gentleman, but the second there are no guests around he’s suddenly got all the manners of a gutter rat. That by itself is enough to make her a little wary, only when she’s scared she lashes out. Thing is, it’s not just his words and mannerisms that make the transformation. He partly unbuttons his shirt the second he’s not on duty, and one day when he’d been muttering to himself poring over some finance documents and he’d gotten louder and was running a hand through his hair distractedly and she’d been in grabbing some makeup and she’d seen…
A gold necklace dangling around his throat, and a brief glimpse of what looked like ink, peeking out from under the white shirt.
She might’ve just been imagining things. It’s just the briefest glimpse when his shirt shifts and then it’s gone again. She could be wrong, but it matches. It matches the eyepatch and the hints of violence in his mannerisms. Plus, he acts all open, but it’s pretty clear there’s a layer of his past he keeps pretty close to his chest.
She can’t quite figure out why a yakuza would be running a cabaret or a cabaret club. Besides, Majima-san is perfectly nice in his jerkish way when they don’t know, but how is he going to act when she knows his secret? The next time they open for business she’s too scared to speak to him, terrified that she’s being way too obvious she knows and he’s gonna take one look at her and instantly know. Youda-chan asks Majima-san what he’d done to earn the silent treatment, and Majima-san mutters some annoyed, confused excuse.
What she didn’t count on was exactly how oblivious Majima-san could be. He stays utterly oblivious, even asking her “All right, I know it ain’t how things’re done, but ya wanna clue me in’ta why yer givin’ me the silent treatment, here?” and “t’s not ‘cause ‘a the vinegar?” and “If yer not feelin’ too hot, why not take a day off?” and basically acting so much like the old Majima-san it’s honestly kind of freaking her out.
When she next comes in, Majima-san appears behind her and she somehow forgets to scream and instead scolds him for scaring girls. There’s a relieved look in his eye if she’s not mistaken before he tells her that he wouldn’t do it if she wouldn’t make such amusing faces, and the more she’s mean and all he does is be mean back, rather than losing his temper or anything, the less she’s scared of him. Well, no, that’s not right; it’s just that her fear becomes more manageable, like she can forget it’s even there sometimes.
He’s just the little bit more intimidating when one of their customers gets a little too drunk and handsy and there’s a very clear control in the polite but firm way he deals with it. If he actually gave in to the urge for violence, he’d be terrifying, but right now she’s glad he’s on their side and likes them.
