they're still human. that's what she forgets sometimes, in the dead of night. for all jacob's faults, for all she follows the creed and her father's words, she's not just a blade in the night, no matter how much she wants to be, and jacob's not merely made of Annoyance with a platonian capital. they don't like to show it, that's what makes it easy to forget, but within jacob lies an easily broken heart, a trusting heart that beats, no matter how he tries to hide it with his quips and annoyance. and within her is the brain of a woman who wants, needs, to be taken seriously, who wants to this day to have the respect of her father and the love of her brother, never mind that having both is probably impossible.
