Note: HERE THERE PROBABLY BE BUFFY/JJBA SPOILERS

Everyone else starts trailing in. While waiting, they’ve decided to spend time checking out the local entertainment. They’d started out with local sports, but Robin had seemed really uncomfortable about watching the ball game, so they’d first switched to what looked like a local board game channel. Xander’s really curious about the board game with dice of many colors, but then, unless Rush decides to challenge them to a game for whatever reason, that’s probably not going to be relevant. It’d probably only be worth watching if they actually were here as tourists. Willow seems a little interested in what looks like it might be a local telenovela with what might be meant to be either some Mayan gods or spirits as some of the characters. It’s been a long time since high school or even since he’s been in California, but he’s pretty sure it’s at least related to Spanish, even if he doesn’t understand it. Handily, they do have subtitles on by default, but again, that’s not really what they’re here for, and while it might give some more clues to the civilization and how it operates, they don’t really have that kind of time right now. They finally find the news channel and there’s some interesting information there: one report of lower yields and locusts in the area (Kakyoin looks more than a little smug at that, despite absolutely no one ever having actually doubted that in the first place), another one covering a local festival (apparently, most of the sacrifices these days are done with animals, which is only slightly reassuring to a guy that grew up in Sunnydale and has almost been sacrificed or experienced his friends almost having been sacrificed on more than one occasion) before, as is apparently tradition through the whole world, turning to the weather.
Kakyoin thankfully had kept some of his wits about him. He’d remembered that the owner would want them to stay through dinner, and since they have a lot of planning to do picked up some really good-looking grilled meats and corn for them to eat from the market. Hopefully given the side effects he hadn’t actually stolen any of it, but under the circumstances it’s actually a favor to stop thinking about that, probably. Like that old riddle, where if a crime happens and nobody’s around to see it, then maybe the suspicion and paranoia won’t eat you alive. Willow might’ve figured out a way to just pay them using magic, anyway, and Kakyoin’s doing better, so he’s going to ignore that.
“That looks great. Though man, I’d hoped there would be something better on,” Josuke announces loudly, ruffling Johan’s hair as he exaggeratedly collapses into one of the cots and grabs one of the pieces of grilled meat.
“Better than Bollywood?” Buffy asks, eyebrows raised, and Willow considers.
“I’m not sure about the telenovela. We’re not watching it now.” Like that wasn’t already obvious.
“I rate their dancing terrible, on the fact they didn’t have any on screen in the thirty seconds we were on the channel,” Xander agrees, getting a shove for his troubles.
“These two spent a lot of the time practicing pickpocketing each other,” Josie announces, not even bothering with a cot.
Giorno doesn’t look too amused, but he doesn’t bother to argue, either. “If Rush is anywhere, he is likely either hiding in the outskirts of town or in the sewers. I suspect the latter. He does not seem a fastidious man, and it is likely that such would give him far more access to be able to move freely, particularly without being noticed by his enemies or any relevant authorities.” He appears to punctuate the statement by carefully taking one of the ears of corn. He’s obviously not disdaining it, but likewise he doesn’t appear to be too much of a fan of hand-food.
Darling digs in enthusiastically, hungry but trying to maintain her table manners. “Whisper didn’t see him, and he’s pretty good about distance and finding people. He’d have to be on the edge of the city, and he’d run the risk of being seen, right?”
“Yeah, there are a lot of campers, local and tourist,” Buffy agrees.
As expected, Jotaro’s quieter than usual and he comes in smelling like cigarette smoke. “I’m sorry for arguing with you, Jotaro,” Kakyoin begins, offering one of the pieces of corn, and it’s clear that Jotaro has absolutely no idea of what to do with that. He squints, slightly suspiciously, cautiously taking the ear of corn and just holding it without taking a bite, but mostly hides further under his hat and mumbles something about it being fine. At least his overthinking nature means that he’s likely to second-guess even his most paranoid thoughts, which should help them all remain at least a little more un-ora’d.
“There’s a few visitors who come here every year. Jahana-san—” Josuke begins.
“I know why it was worse with Severin,” Jotaro interrupts heavily, hands jammed firmly in his pockets. Josuke falters. “He didn’t just trespass. I think it was at the Well specifically. That’s why they won’t talk about it.”
That would make some sense. They do seem to have some taboos, including talking about the Well. And—yeah, actually. “Wasn’t there a flood when those Wolfram & Hart guys started attacking everybody?”
He’s addressing Giorno, but it’s Buffy who actually replies. “Yes, and that’s never going to not be weird, you realize that.”
“Welcome to my life,” Johan retorts with a wave of his arms. “So, it’s possible to leave. Jotaro confirmed that, too. But, uh, there were others who only come once, right?” It’s good to confirm things he’s a little hazy about.
“Yeah, more than a couple, though I’ll note that it’s largely a word-of-mouth thing. I don’t know if you’d consider it more underground, like a mahjong parlor, or if there’s actually some magic weirdness tied up in that.” Josuke is obviously trying hard not to think about the more supernatural implications.
Johan can’t say for sure, but there is at least one relevant thing he can mention. “Well, one of them definitely didn’t. The Sheriff—her title’s Ix Ahau, apparently—happens to be a Speedwagon Foundation agent sent to investigate, only obviously she never left or reported in. I think she’s got a Stand, but I don’t know that we can necessarily count on her—she’s more on the side of the town now, rather than us.”
“What did you learn from the interrogation?” the Captain asks sharply, and Jotaro glares and pointedly begins to eat.
“I can fill in, if you want,” Johan offers. Jotaro nods abruptly, but from the way he relaxes the lack of intense scrutiny is probably helping. “Okay, so it’s a little like this show, The Prisoner. Don’t look at me like that. When you’re in a small town you rent what the video store has, right? Only it’s not a system of prisoners and wardens. There’s at least three categories, right? You’ve got locals, but we can refer to them as ‘residents’. Visitors, like us at the moment, can just leave and come back as long as we behave. And there’s others like the Wolfram & Hart guys and Severin, who we can call ‘troublemakers’, who get kicked out. We can probably guess Florence Welch probably didn’t come here intending to stay, so we probably don’t want to end up on either end of the equation.”
“If that’s the case, if you’re noticed, it assigns you a category based on what would benefit the city. Like it’s actually actively trying to improve itself.” Willow gets a little self-conscious when she realizes everyone’s staring at her. “Magical self-aware cities are interesting,” she defends.
        “And dangerous,” Jotaro counters.
Good thing we’re being positive here,” Buffy states brightly.
