Me: I don't write poetry
Also Me: I don't have adequate words for today
Also Me: ...Well, it's true, sometimes I write poetry.

I'd say these are the ripples of 2020
but
they've been going back farther than that
haven't they? 
I hope this is the last
a last gasp like a fish out of water
but I wasn't caught unawares
not today
because I saw this coming
not written in the stars nor on message boards
but in the cruelty, the fever
the desire to be called patriots, heroes
rather than the more fitting murderers, turncoats
the shadow of the Civil War and Confederate ghosts clinging to life
far beyond their time
and
I hope we're coming to the end
that we'll stop making history and start making peace
be normal and ordinary and forgotten for a while
I'd wish we make history in all the right ways
fix healthcare and the plague and the deaths of innocents
but four years of shocking truth after shocking truth
in a time when 'truth is stranger than fiction'
has never been more true, I've grown weary and cynical. 
I'd hope, but I don't want to be let down again.
Perhaps in time we can again build a better future and
reach for the stars. 
Right now, though, we need a better present. 
A better precedent.
