“Dark Magician might be connected to him, but I think Silent Magician suits you.”  Téa’s not even thinking about this, until she notices an arked eyebrow that looks very much like Yami.  “You know, how it level ups and grows stronger over time.”
Yugi coughs and blushes, but at the same time there’s a pleased look on his face.  “Thanks.”

So much running around today with nothing much to show for it.  At least my characters are having a better time of it.  I really like these two.

Chapter Summary: Card games can't always be for high stakes, like the fate of the world.

Word Count: 430
Rating: teen

Yugi doesn’t dislike tournaments, but they’re always high-stakes, and everyone’s eyes are always on him.  Some of the tournaments, like the local ones, might have been laid back if he wasn’t the King of Games.  But naturally, he is, so he’s a celebrity.
Still, he likes the ones against his friends, where he can have fun and relax and not worry about the possible end of the world.  (It should’ve been the end, after Zorc, after the Pharaoh left, but he’s the new Pharaoh in heart if not in title, despite the mocking way Kaiba will call him that out of the blue, and he can feel something stirring.  The only thing that keeps him from worrying about it constantly is the even stronger feeling that he’s not center stage, anymore.  He can help out, but it’s someone else’s destiny to save the world now, and he can’t help but feel relieved, even as he feels guilty, because it’s sort of the same thing as wishing someone else into danger.  The practical, Yami-ish sounding part of him says that there’s no point in worrying about it, because he can’t change the fact that the world is quite possibly going to be in danger, again, and he can’t fight this kind of destiny.)
Of course, duels against Seto Kaiba are always high-stakes, even when it’s just the two of them.  Seto brings the same intensity to everything he does.
It’s a surprise how Kaiba acts when he finally wins.  He doesn’t start calling himself the King of Games.  He doesn’t even make an announcement.  At the time, he just smiles smugly to himself and for the first time congratulates Yugi on a duel well-played.
The secret can’t be kept forever, but when the media blows up, Kaiba’s interview says that he still considers Yugi the King of Games, and that he’s the only challenge Kaiba’s ever faced.  (Kaiba does reclaim the World Champion title, though.  His courtesy only extends so far.)  It’s clear from the interview that he still considers the dueling world to only consist of him and Yugi, but Joey nearly falls over at the relative humility.  Yugi holds himself back from telling his friends ‘I told you so’.  He knows Kaiba is more than he presents himself, which comes as a relief for Mokuba, but they still have trouble believing.
Afterwards, Kaiba is still intense, but he actually manages to enjoy himself, sometimes.  In general, Yugi still wins, but it doesn’t seem to bother Seto as much, especially since the tally is greater than one to a million.

Chapter Summary: Yugi doesn't care for this deck.

Word Count: 380
Rating: teen

Yugi tries not to feel discouraged as he stares at the cards luck has dealt him.  It’s not as all over the place as he’d expected, but it’s also not the kind of deck he’d play if he gets the choice.  It’s dark, a vampire and zombie mix, and if he plays it as it’s meant to be played, he’s going to have to be a person he doesn’t care to be.  Now that he’s whole, has access to both sides, he can tap into that darker part of himself, of Yami, the side that wanted victory at any cost, but he doesn’t particularly want to do that.  Not like he has much choice, though, unless he forfeits now.
He’s somewhat ruthless, like Yami when he or Téa had to hold him back, and the only reason he continues is because there aren’t lives on the line this time.  He can feel his friends (and Kaiba) staring at him.  Kaiba’s definitely thrown off his game, but all he can do is give his friends a smile and a thumb’s up and play the game.  Seto loses, but he almost doesn’t care, which is odd behavior but indication enough that he’s been worrying.  “Maybe next time, you can give people a choice of booster packs?” he asks with a smile, and Kaiba nods.
“I was just playing the deck I was given,” he shrugs, as his friends run up to him with concern in their eyes.  The heart of the cards was dark, and he could either deny that or play the cards.  “No Shadow Realm, I promise.”
He mentally joins their collective sigh of relief.  That’s not to say that they’re going to get through forever without something happening—Mahad’s worried about something, again, but until something actually happens and they have something to go on, he can actually participate in a normal tournament for once.
And groans.  Hopefully, he hasn’t just jinxed them all.
And he’s sure someone would like these cards, that they’ll find a home.  Odd, I’d give them to Bonz but he hasn’t been around in a while.  He spots an interested-looking kid and begins heading over, waving and smiling.  He’ll move faster without the whole group, and he doesn’t want to intimidate a new duelist.

“Yugi looks really worried up there.” Téa remarks.
“Well, he can’t rely on his usual deck.”  Joey had been worried about it until he’d gotten the Red Eyes, at which point he’d started grinning and hadn’t stopped until play started.  He’d managed to pull through, but then, he had to do a lot of reacting and thinking on his feet in his duels before this.  And now he had two Red Eyes, though the one that had gotten him through so much would always be his favored battle-worn companion.
“You got this, Yugi!” Tristan yells.
Their friend manages a smile and a thumbs-up and goes back to intently staring at the cards he’d gotten.
“You have fifteen minutes to look at your deck before the duel starts,” the announcer states.

Chapter Summary: The Latest Tournament

Word Count: 225
Rating: teen

The latest tournament is a booster pack tournament, a new idea that Kaiba came up with.  It sounds like a good idea.  It’s a completely different test of skill than the rest of the tournaments, since it’s not as much ‘what kind of deck can you make’ as much as it is a ‘how can you adapt to a less than ideal deck and think on your feet’.  Joey will probably do very well.
Still, Yugi’s nervous.  He’s used to putting his heart into his deck, and isn’t sure how he’d do.  Sure, he puts decks together all the time in his mind, but he doesn’t actually want to play most of them.  It’ll actually be interesting, if there’s a Champion who specializes in this booster pack tournament thing.  It’s probably why Kaiba suggested it, honestly.
“Worried?” the man himself asks.  It’s as good an entrance as any.
Yugi shrugs.  Card games have always made sense to him, and he’s always been good at them.  A thought’s occurred to him and he’s not too excited about it.  The rules are the rules.  He has to play the deck he gets, but to do so, he might have to play in a way he doesn’t really care for.  “Nervous, excited.  It’s a really cool idea.”
Seto smirks.  “Of course.  I came up with it, after all.”

Chapter Summary: Yugi finds himself somewhere familiar.

Word Count: 320
Rating: teen

Yugi wakes up and he’s in a place he hasn’t been in a while.  He’s in the labyrinth of his mind.  Or, well, Yami’s mind, since it was the Puzzle.  Which he no longer had, so how…?  “Yami?” he calls, and then remembers.  “Atem?”
It’s silent and cold, like a real tomb.  He doesn’t have to search every door; he knows he’s alone.  He opens one anyway, and a cold wind blows.  It’s almost nostalgic, but why would it be nostalgic for him?
He closes his eyes, and suddenly he’s sitting on a throne in Ancient Egypt, surrounded by people he met once.  But he thinks and he knows them, like he knows Joey and Téa and Tristan.  He blinks and, again, he’s back in the labyrinth.
It’s like it’s trying to tell him something, but what.
Treat it like a puzzle.  You can figure it out.
He’d always called Yami ‘Other Me’, and Yami had done the same.  Not often, but he still had done so.  Yami had taken on his appearance, but he’d thought it was because they shared a body until they’d been shown the picture of the Pharaoh on the stone tablet.  Still, he’d been thinking it was just coincidence.
Really, I should know better.  It’s never coincidence.  Not with me.  I’m getting a little sick of that, but I can’t really change it, either.
The solution was quite possibly that simple, and it’s just been waiting here for him.  He feels like denying it, but there was a call and he answered, like he had when the Millennium Puzzle had called him to Egypt.  Except…that hadn’t been him, had it?  My head hurts, but…I can run, I can hide, I can try to deny my birthright, but in the end, it will find me all the same.  We were just pieces of a puzzle, now whole.  Now if only he can figure his way out…

Chapter Summary: Yugi encounters a surprise at the museum.

Word Count: 215
Rating: teen

Bakura ends up talking about everything he knows about the Ancient Egyptians as they walk to the museum, but Yugi doesn’t mind.  It’s good that his friend is getting back to normal and isn’t too traumatized by everything that had happened.
It’s when they enter the exhibit that Yugi falters a little.  Bakura doesn’t notice; he’s still talking, but Yugi can’t hear him.
There’s a buzzing in his ears, and he feels a little faint.  He realizes Ryou’s gotten ahead and hurries to catch up.
His head hurts a little, but he’s not about to ruin time with a friend, so he hurries to catch up.  His headache dies down a little until they stop before a tablet.  There’s writing on it, and suddenly the noise in his ears is roaring, and his hands are trembling, and he’s either about to throw up or pass out.
He can read the writing.  It’s nothing too exciting, just talking about a Rahotep and his decree for food to be passed out to the people since there was a famine.  But he can read it.
He feels himself fall, but he doesn’t hear Ryou scream or try to catch him.
He briefly wakes in the hospital.  Grandpa’s there.  “Don’t tell Téa,” he asks, and then passes out again.

“Are you sure you want to go to the exhibit?  We could always do something else instead.”  Ryou sounds concerned, and Yugi forces a laugh.  The phone call is probably going to make him late, but he can’t just hang up.
“No, it’s interesting, and you really wanted to go!”  He takes another shirt out, stares at for a minute, and discards it.  It’s definitely an adjustment living without Yami…er, Atem.  Because eventually the Pharaoh would tell him to just pick something, so he didn’t keep trying to find the perfect outfit.
He’s not sure if he had a growth spurt or what, but most of…everything, really, seems to be just slightly too short.
“It will probably involve a lot of walking,” Bakura warns, and Yugi feels a familiar irritation stir even as he shakes his head, amused.
“I’m not made of glass.  I’ll be fine,” he reassures his friend.
“Right, sorry.  See you then.”  Bakura hangs up, and Yugi’s left staring at his wardrobe.

Chapter Summary: Yami's departure doesn't quite go as planned.

Word Count: 270

Notes: Attempting Joey's accent, because I can be out there in fanfic.  Or something.

As Atem passes through the gates, a white light appears and speeds into Yugi.  For a moment, Joey wonders whether this is supposed to be happening and no one bothered to tell him before the confused and panicked muttering between Ishizu and Marik indicates that no, no, this isn’t how it’s supposed to go.  And then his best friend starts to fall.
“Yuug!”  Sure, Yugi might have gone a little further toward the platform than the rest of them had, so getting to him was a little difficult, but Joey Wheeler wasn’t about to let a friend fall if he could help it.  Instantly, it seemed, there was a crowd around, but it was almost as if they didn’t exist.  “Come on, speak ta me, pal!”
It takes a minute of freaking out before Tristan helpfully checks the pulse and reassures them all that Yugi’s not dead, which is something.  Still, every moment that those eyes don’t open is another moment Joey has to worry.
“Come on, no, we can’t lose you both,” Téa whispers, kneeling next to them, and then she’s slumping over, too.
“No!  What’s goin’ on?  Wasn’t this how it was supposed to happen?  Why this, why now?”  Joey slams his fist against the floor and then winces.  Stone hurts.
“I don’t understand,” Ishizu whispers behind them.
Like she’s a clockwork toy and has just been wound up again, Téa sits back up.  She’s crying again, but then, not even that stuck up brat Kaiba’s eyes are dry.  “Are you all right?” he asks, voice harsher than normal.
“I…”  Now she just looks confused, and more than a bit freaked out.  “I—I think I was just in Yugi’s mind, but…it was weird.  He didn’t recognize me at all.”
Instantly, there’s a clamor again, everyone crying out all at once.  It takes a chunk of rubble taking a chunk out of Joey’s arm for anyone to realize that the temple is falling apart.  He picks up Yuug, who’s usually easy enough to carry but feels even more worryingly light now.  It’s probably good, generally, because his arm hurts.  “Come on, guys, we gotta move!”
For a moment, he’s worried that everyone’s too shocked to move, but Kaiba scoops up Mokuba and starts leading the charge.  The younger Kaiba is protesting, but it throws the others into action.  So rich boy’s good for somethin’.  Good ta know.
In his arms, Yugi starts stirring a little, which is a good sign and Joey feels his eyes start to fill again, but it makes it harder to see and to run, and if it makes him drop his friend, with the wound...
Eventually, he feels a slight tug on his jacket and a scratchy, weak voice asking, “J-Joey?  Why are you carrying me?”
“Because the temple’s collapsing, and I wasn’t gonna just leave ya dere,” he responds matter-of-factly, smiling a little through the tears.  Yugi knows him.
“Oh, okay.”  Yugi nods slightly and stops moving around so much.
“Next time ya collapse, warn a guy, woudja?” Joey asks.  He’s trying to be light-hearted, but from the weak, reassuring pat he’s probably not very successful.
“I’ll do that,” Yugi states cheerfully.

Chapter Summary: Mildly AU, starting with the end of the series.  Yep, that moment, in which there was not a dry eye in the room.  You've been warned.  (We'll figure out how AU this is after the new movie, I'm sure.)

Word Count: 270
Rating: teen

“I hate to break the terrible news ta ya, but you’re not going anywhere!  ‘Cause everything you’ve given us stays right here in our hearts!”  Joey’s grinning through the tears.  Out of everyone that could’ve been expected to give a cheerful speech, Wheeler hadn’t been first on the list, and yet…he should’ve been.  After all, an incarnation of one of the legendary warriors of Atlantis was hardly someone to be overlooked.
“Right!”  The Pharaoh smiles, himself.  He’s tired, and now he finally has a chance for rest.  Maybe he should have pushed himself out more, gotten to know these people who weren’t just Yugi’s friends but also his own, but this is no time for regret.  He would have acted the same way, and he can’t fix it now.  He’s just lucky enough to have friends who understood.  That’s true power, not being Pharaoh or having the God Cards.
“Like we always say…it’s your move!”  Yugi’s smiling, too, and that’s the permission he needs.  He walks forward to the gate, giving them a thumb’s up as a final farewell salute.
As he joins his friends in the Duat, turns around to get one last look at his friends, he doesn’t realize the scene he sees is almost a minute behind what is actually occurring out there, and the gates close before he can realize something’s wrong.  He goes to the afterlife in blissful ignorance, but in the end, Yugi had proven he was just as gifted.  Perhaps Atem would’ve had trouble accepting that, but the test had shown the truth.  Yugi was more than capable of fighting his own battles.
