Buffy/Doctor Who Dream

I had this dream a couple weeks back.

Giles was an incarnation of the Doctor (no idea which incarnation, but probably an AU which means he could have been any of them).  Xander and Willow were his companions.  Not sure about Xander's origin; Willow had things in common with Nyssa.

The first episode was a place where they landed, the forest looked idyllic, and then they ended up getting chased away from the TARDIS by dinosaurs or something.  The native people managed to find and rescue them but their only strategy is running away really.  They will not open their gates and allow themselves to potentially be wiped out in order to let their guests out on a suicide mission or aid them in attempting to retrieve the TARDIS.  They expect their guests to integrate into the city.

They each try different approaches in preparation for an upcoming festival.  The Doctor tries to make friends with everyone and get them to reveal something without meaning to, as well as getting himself on the planning committee for one of the events.  Willow focuses on absorbing all the knowledge she possibly can from both the databases (not a lot, as while it’s obvious these were used before and that a bigger civilization used to be present before and these are a people in decline) and the libraries.  Xander, well.  The ‘haha’ way to put it would be that he does drugs, but that’s not the full story.

There’s a native plant the Doctor has never heard of that unlocks brief precognition, not too useful over the long-term but is pretty useful in a fight and is the only reason their occasional hunting parties to find survivors or other resources haven’t been slaughtered or tracked down yet.  (Hence why the Doctor and his friends are very skeptical about the whole ‘it’d be too dangerous to let you leave—given how they’re barely hanging on, the Doctor suspects that it’s an excuse to try to keep them as an extra resource.)  Use is required to take part in the warrior’s contest, and the Doctor has been told (though isn’t sure if it’s the truth) that winning one of the contests can give the winner one wish.  Like being able to leave.  The Doctor isn’t fully on board with Xander’s plan but reluctantly goes along with it.  It’s a dangerous plan, he warns.

“Sure, but I can’t just sit around and do nothing.  Both you and Willow are working hard to make sure we can get out of here.  I’m not going to be the dead weight.”

Just in case, the Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver to monitor Xander’s condition every day; it’s not perfect but it’ll have to do, since the people insist the plant is perfectly harmless and would not allow their medical equipment to be ‘repurposed’ for such an ‘unnecessary worry’.  He does notice changes in Xander’s brain chemistry and cells but has no idea whether they’re dangerous or not.  (This will prove to be important later in the series/season, as they’re permanent and do not fade after access to the plant is no longer possible.  Though the Doctor takes a sample anyway.)

Sadly, I didn’t get to see the ending, so I don’t know how they managed to escape except that they did.

I also didn’t get to see much of the second episode, so I don’t know much except that Cordy was a big starring role and I get the feeling it might be a similar story to the great classic Star Trek TOS episode “Mark of Gideon” only with Cordy being a more active role.

Extras not in dream: This obviously means Ethan is the Master.  Which actually is pretty fitting.

It’s interesting that Buffy wasn’t with them, although I get the feeling this is probably only temporary.  When I think about how writing would go, I get the feeling she’s one of the bodyguards for a space futuristic Roman or Egyptian civilization run by some equivalent of Cleopatra or something.  (So she’d be from the equivalent of the Mummy movies Medjai, as would the rest of the Slayers, and for once their existence isn’t a tool or a pawn but a high honor the people aspire to send their daughters to, second in divinity only to the ruler herself.  Still dangerous, but as we’ve recently seen when you’re the people protecting the government from attacks from within as well as outside, there’s a certain amount of danger.)  The Doctor and companions go there, help out, and in thanks the leader offers the aid of one of her most trusted bodyguards.  “That’s not necessary; really, it’s not.  I wouldn’t think to deprive you of any of your people—” The Doctor begins protesting.

“Oh, but you may find a use for her sooner than you think.”  It’s at that point that the Doctor realizes her people have a limited ability to see into Time, like him, and she’s seen something he has not.  This of course ties into whatever the series arc is for that series/season, so he stops protesting and accepts.

Street Wizard

It's October again, so time for this series to return again.  (also just that's how it worked out prewriting wise).

Main Points:
Star Trek (the 2009!movie verse)/Constantine crossover
Summary: Bones sees more than Kirk thinks--things like the fact that the love and attraction isn't a one-sided deal.  That Kirk is showing uncharacteristic restraint in holding back, because he thinks he'll break Bones, extra lives or not.  But he also sees things the wizard doesn't--like they're equally broken, equally likely to break each other, but also that it all might be worth it in the end.

idle thought #213

so, if you think you've seen this before, or think you'll see it again, you're probably right on both accounts.  because this is a super important reminder.
sometimes I'll feel super unmotivated, writing.  sometimes i'll feel like my current chapter is trash or that I'm not good enough, as a writer.
and then i'll check my email and find someone's given my chapter a kudos (ao3) or that sunnydale herald continues to rec my stuff (that'll never stop making me smile) or whatever.
and then i'll remember that for however mediocre a current chapter is, or how the depression/anxiety voices try to weigh me down, or it feels like nobody's reading and i'm just sending words into an endless void...i haven't written the supernatural finale.  i haven't written captain america as a nazi.  i didn't write the devil may cry reboot, and i certainly haven't followed their "stellar pr example".  i didn't write the joss whedon avengers movies, or his failed wonder woman script.  i definitely am not the grand moff.  i'd like to think i write actual character arcs and plot arcs unlike the miraculous writers.
i welcome my whole audience (except if you think other people don't deserve to have rights, get out, and may the door smack you on your way out).  i don't make fun of interpretations (okay, i haven't seen any, but even if i disagreed i would just say 'that wasn't intended' or OH NO THAT WASN'T INTENDED LET ME FIX THAT) or tell my audience they're seeing things.
i don't write things so bad that a whole conspiracy coalesces around the utter failure that is that piece of writing.  i didn't write an offensive civil rights movement analogue that was meant to be a civil rights movement analogue until people said 'wait?? maybe that's in bad taste???' and then it wasn't a civil rights movement analogue and if you saw that you were crazy.  i try to go more complex and not just write off people particularly if they happen to be more villainous-coded, because, you know, subverting expectations with good writing is a good thing.  (also my brother who is awesome is slytherin, some of my best friends from college are slytherin and i like snakes, i don't know why you expected me to go anywhere else with that.  i'm not declaring the outcasts evil because that's just not cool.  also, i'm a hufflepuff so puffing up and fighting for the people i care for is a thing i do.)  i didn't turn james t kirk into the pop culture caricature everyone thought he was.  (and then he fought it anyway.  fight the good fight, buddy.)
maybe i had some writing choices that weren't the best.  let's be honest, some of our taste when we were younger is terrible.  and sometimes we love terrible things because nothing's perfect and picking through the leavings of terribly written stories or badly mangled stories or a no man's land of isms or good idea poor execution stories that make us weep in frustration for the better show/book/game that we all collectively hallucinated along the way is all we have.  but we should also take heart that we made it better.  we're not just dreamers, because we see the flaws, and we bring them up not to tear others down but to remind ourselves of the pitfalls, we bring them up because these are conversations worth having, we bring them up because love this stuff and we want to analyze that the writers did so good but they let us down here, and how? why?
anyway, reminding yourself of all the terrible writing decisions that have been made in things you love, and also reminding yourself that you are doing everything you can to avoid writing such things, does wonders for your self-esteem as a writer.  also, when you mess up, there's always editing.  and like a responsible author you do sit down, go 'wait, i should change this' or, if someone told you, 'wait, they're right', edit it, and there you go.  and your interpretation is not wrong, and you should not feel bad for engaging in the text because people go to school to learn to do what you're doing, and you're all important.

edit: i don't want to take out the stuff with harry potter because I don't want to erase history and to some extent want to leave it as a screw you rowling.  anybody in any house with any decency would tear down your precious status quo, and yes, your pedestal with it.  but to continue with the theme: i didn't write 'slavery is okay with the right owners, maybe' and 'most fat people are evil' and 'being ultrafeminine or having masculine features is also a sign of evil in female characters'.  i also didn't turn out to be a massive piece of shit.  so this makes me happier about even my worst writing.  and yes, there are bits i'm not happy with.  several in self-made hero, actually, but even then i don't think i've ever failed as badly as rowling, or whedon, or the grand moff, or astruc, or nick spencer.  and as horrible as that is, as a writer that's a comforting thought.  i'll reiterate, though--please, when i make a mistake, tell me!  i want to improve, unlike these jerks.

Khan 1-5

“Your opinion of this court’s legitimacy is irrelevant.” That’s why contempt of court exists.

…please have his prosecutor ex here that would be amazing they don’t even have to be exes in this version just please please please

“He claims to be this man” and the original Khan.  Goodo.

Oh Kirk actually directly says ‘you’re not Khan’.  Again, more interesting than the movie.

I kinda thought the Eugenics Wars were kinda a side effect of a Gattaca-style designer baby thing, but.  I can see this.

…is that legit a picture in the background?

Nah, I think he’s at least—partially—telling the truth.

I also thought they fought each other, though that might be the ambition thing.

Are you actually Alexander Newton?  Cause you look like him.

Khan the best ruler?  That sounds a little propaganda to me.

Ah, and the first wife, Sanjay.

Hey, malik.  I’d never heard that name before Prince of Persia and then suddenly I’m hearing it everywhere.

There’s “John”, though pretending you’re his best friend is gonna be a problem, Marcus.

Best surgeon?  Boyce?

Okay, he’s got amnesia, so it might work for a bit, but.

…sulu?  Are you related to our sulu?

Someone else’s memories?  You have my interest.

“Convince me.”  Yes, good

Okay, that makes that bonehead move actually make sense.

…facial reconstruction?  Really?  I mean, I guess it works, but.  (& is technically what happened, givn the whitewashing stuff.)

And Kirk noticed the stuff I did, and goes through the logic and emotion of it.  Seriously.  The original’s still better, but.

Issue 24 Gorn

This one was an interesting episode and I want to see where they take it.

…oh, they already did Pon Farr?  …I don’t remember the original order.

Wait.

What.

…spock’s there on the bridge.  What.

Also Kirk’s having nightmares, but seriously.  What.

Oh, uh.  Commander spock’s the older one, right?  Okay.

/casually has competent female crewmembers and alien crewmembers

Gorn are aliens, not animals, but.

(what even is the distinction, given aliens?  Is there some sort of intelligence test?  Really alien intelligences have to slip under the radar even)

Look.  Starfleet is a peacekeeping force, not a let’s wipe out everything force.  That’s the mirror-verse you’re looking at.

…yeah, that makes sense for a desert planet.  SEE PEOPLE KNOWING WHAT THEY’RE WRITING ABOUT

…kirk, if you’re going by that logic, you died.  You shouldn’t be going anywhere either.

“Something tells me talking isn’t going to help us” well, it kinda did last time.  Kinda.  (also playing macguyver)

Yeah, this guy seems like he might try to take over the bridge for revenge.  He really should be in medbay, not here.

Oh, yeah, especially with these new revelations.  Because Kirk isn’t a killer.

“What’s the point of having all this power if I don’t know how to use it?” this is a guy who should be captain ladies, gentlemen, and assorted beings

Aka Into darkness was a bad movie and it’s maybe a good thing we didn’t get a fourth movie because I have the feeling it’s the opposite of the original series where it’s the even movies that’re bad

…an actual ship named the HMS Enterprise.  Really?

…your ancestor talks like Bones.  Okay.

Look, he’s not sailing alone.  He’s got people to look out for him.

Engineering is: understanding how things work.  Figuring out what makes them not work.  Fixing that.  the actual approach may differ but the workflow is the same.  (I mean, that’s what Xander Knight says, so.)

Ah, there’s your problem.  Don’t mess with the dog.

*The Kirk I write just beams in.*  Look, Scott, accomodations are a thing.  If one of our crew can’t work with the way it’s currently fitted, we fix it so they can.

He was bullied, great.

…Not sure I’m on board with the dad, either.  Can’t tell if that’s emotional abuse or not.  I’d need to see more.

…they had First Contact with the Kelvin.  Suddenly slapped with more feels.

Also George is also an awkward penguin.

“Think it’ll work?” “It’ll take a miracle.”

…OKAY NOW WE NEED TO SEE HIM DEAL WITH JIM, BECAUSE IF HE WAS FRIENDS WITH HIS DAD THAT IS BOTH AWKWARD AND ARGH

“Do you ever say more than one word at a time?” “Rare.”

…aww.  He learned to stand his ground.

You’re not wrong, Scotty.  Certain admirals putting their grudges over sensibility.

Well, that’s one way to do it.

Well, I didn’t come in here for romance, but I like that it’s still more about the characterization than the actual romance…IDK, sometimes romance comes off as voyeuristic and that feels a little slimy.

Wow.  Okay, kinda tragic backstory, but it happens.  Things go wrong, and in space that can go very wrong.  I’m sorry, but I’m also impressed.

idle thought #44

on star trek: the next generation (written at the time before I'd finished the season, though given that I haven't made it far into the second shows how interested I really am in the end)
My issues, thus far, are that the first few episodes were awful, Picard, thus far, is a bit too military/authoritarian for my taste, nobody listens to anyone aboard this ship, especially not anyone with information that might help, there are no shifts, which make a bigger ship than the original feel even smaller, which makes the bridge crew actually more important except Worf's gotten maybe fifteen minutes of screen time, 13 of which was getting beat up or a cold, Yar and Dr. Crusher have little to no personality most of which is cliches, and the bridge essentially looks like a large carpeted room that's had some chairs stuffed in.  And Q.  Q is annoying.  He's like Gabriel (supernatural) without a sense of humor.  If you have a sense of humor and can laugh at yourself, even the worst personalities can be fine.  If you don't?  You're insufferable and I hope you die you waste of space.  (well, maybe not that far, unless you're a powerful alien wanting to wipe entire species off the board with a single thought, in which case I take nothing back.)
(I am looking forward to the Borg.  There were a few good episodes.  I have the feeling it gets good with the Borg.)
