Giles is breathing hard as he tries to keep up with Starfleet’s newest Captain. “Buffy, are you even listening?” he asks in a fit of pique.
“I’m pretty sure the only thing I heard from you was ‘you’ve got a ship’,” she responds easily, keeping an easy pace. If she wasn’t trying to at least let Giles keep up a little, then she’s actually be challenging herself, but as it is she’s barely moving compared to her usual.
He sighs heavily. “You’re lucky you’re dealing with me and not the other Admirals. They wouldn’t be as patient with you.”
She smiles. “Why do you think they make you deal with me?”
He can’t argue with that one. “You’re being given the USS Valkyrie.”
She nods appreciatively. “I like the name.”
“I think you’ll enjoy the choice of CMO. Doctor Benjamin Wilkinson.” That actually gets her to turn and smile.
“He’s great at what he does, easy to talk to. And pretty, which helps things,” she agrees. “Anyone else?”
“I’m recommending Lieutenant Wesley as Tactical. He’s not me, of course, but I am unable to leave here to support you,” he states quietly and earns a pat on the arm.
“I get it. Politics,” she states, light voice belying her actual hatred of such things.
“They’re also planning on giving you one of the new seers, given your mission, but haven’t told me exactly who. The rest are your choice from a few options I haven’t heard of, but I have the documents and profiles for your perusal.” From the raised eyebrow, it’s clear she knows there’s far more than just the publicly available data there. He’s not going to dignify that with a comment or apologize, though. He can’t look out for her quite as much after the promotion, given his distance, which means that he takes the opportunities where he can get them.
“I suppose you’ve got a handy summary of the mission briefing for me?” With that last turn, Giles suspects that they’re heading out to the shipyards to check out her latest toy, and, well, she’s earned it and he’s proud. He might even manage to tell her that today.
“You better read in detail later,” he warns, even if the lazy attitude is largely just a front, and, being detail-oriented, he’d be surprised if she didn’t.
“What do you think I have you for?” she asks, cheekily, and he just shakes his head, not quite managing to keep the smile contained.
