Mista, Giorno reflects, had been right. This is not a particularly uncommon experience. While not as versed in the precise details and, for lack of a better word to describe the situation, politics of running a mob (which, on occasion, dipped into actual politics, as greedy politicians, corrupt police officers, and crooked businessmen did tend to expect the occasional bribe), he was nonetheless possessed of a sort of common sense invaluable to Giorno’s operations. Particularly as ‘common sense’, in Giorno’s experience, tends to be a bit of a misnomer.
He had previously suggested Giorno was in need of a vacation. He would likely be proud to learn that he had been right. Admittedly, most people would not consider a trip in which he had meddled in the affairs of the local gangsters, broke into a local home, took a trip down the Amazon, and then was exposed to tropical diseases, experienced the horror of an underground lab, interrogated the disembodied head of the former Boss who had very nearly killed them all, and then nearly been blown up as a vacation. Giorno has discarded any thought of being an average person long ago, for the sake of his dream.
For all that, he does feel a little more rested. Perhaps it was actually spending time in the presence of so much oxygen, or the variety and majesty of the rainforest and life teeming within. He would have never thought the trip could be possible, as a child.
On second thoughts, however, Mista would probably also have a breakdown on learning exactly how the trip went. Perhaps he should omit some details when he passes that on. He is curious to learn about what the rest of the Joestars have gotten up to in his absence, and how Passione affairs have been progressing.
He would have preferred to travel by dragon. The dragon doesn’t seem to be affected by whatever appears to affect the Joestars. He doesn’t want to pay too much attention to superstition, but is not in the business of ignoring facts, either. The pattern exists, and while it is not every single trip, he checks on the parachutes on board, now. The conversations are usually more worthwhile, as well. This time, he does not mind. Many of the creatures he had made don’t wish to come with him, but the snake and a few of the frogs and birds wanted to come. At least the poison dart frogs have the sense to stay out of the way so as not to poison his allies. The boa is likely just using him for heat, but unlike many he does not mind—it is honest, a simple exchange he does not begrudge. He spends much of the flight sleeping, as well. The discussion with Diavolo had been surprisingly exhausting. He does not regret it. Regret is a luxury he cannot afford, not if he is to accomplish his goals. He had been fine not knowing the details, however, and facing him again reminds him of what else had been lost—necessary, but no less dear.
He is almost awake by the time he and the others are drawn aside for a check-up—using a Stand, it appears, suited to healing as his is not. Fascinating. Once he is pronounced healthy by the Speedwagon Foundation doctors, he is surprised to be greeted by il bacetto like true famiglia, the American looking surprisingly unashamed of the Italian gesture until Giorno, frozen in shock, is unable to respond.
Sorry, um. For not greeting you properly sooner?” Johan manages, and that is enough prompting for Giorno to begin moving again smoothly as if he had never stopped, returning the air kisses.
No, of course, you were otherwise preoccupied.” Nearly dying and losing one’s eyesight is rather pressing.
He does, of course, know what this means. In contrast to Mista, Giorno had quickly learned, if this was not an aptitude from birth, how to ‘read a room’. Johan went out of his way to truly treat Giorno as famiglia, knowing that Giovanna’s adoptive home means more to him than the place of his birth, to try to counteract any standoffishness from the others. And that, of course, it’s largely from his Stand, allowing him a perhaps uncanny insight—but, conversely, the sort of person that would have such a Stand, to mirror and reflect and try to ensure a better chance of fitting in. He does not know Johan’s exact circumstances, but he, too, is possessed of some insight himself, and knows that, rather than mere superficiality, here they share some connection, however unfortunate. His cugino longs to be loved, to be accepted by famiglia, and thus is acting to try to assure Giorno that he has a place. If all else fails, they can be the outcasts together, forging an alliance for future family reunions. Selfishness indulged only because it benefits another, like the snake.
Where’s my kisses?” Buffy teases from behind, stifling a yawn. Given how Dr. Kujo treats her, she practically is family.
That knowing look Johan exchanges with Giorno says that his cugino agrees, is practically reading Giorno’s mind, but that does not bother the boss, for, if that is the case, there is none other he trusts as deeply as himself, and it is as if he has a doppelganger. “Guess telling you you’re practically family was pretty overdue, too. Fine, fine.”
Before catching up further with his friend, he turns to Giorno with a smile. “I think Mista had a report to help you catch up,” he mentions, and that sort of quiet aid is vastly underrated. Johan will, sadly, probably be resistant to overtures of recruitment, but even some aid now and then would be of aid. He leaves, smiling at the loud exclamations of the one-eyed man who can see again.
It wasn’t too urgent, Boss, but I’m glad to hear from you,” Mista responds, voice reflecting that gratitude. Having at least one extremely honest and reliable man in his organization is appreciated. Likewise, it is nice to learn that some of the pressure had been in his head, that with a competent and reasonably loyal group of followers, he need not be responsible for absolutely every moment. “Morricone didn’t have anything to do with Rush, and none of his known associates showed up in the recurring deliveries.” He pauses, but Giorno isn’t the type to ask, impatiently, for elaboration, so he continues, a little deflated from his attempt at improving the story. “One single delivery a few years ago, for Signor Sarde, on behalf of an Aguta. That’s all.”
That name is unfamiliar to Giorno, and he has long since memorized any records left behind by Diavolo or others. It may have little to do with this, and more to do with Wolfram & Hart. Nonetheless, that is curious. “What was the delivery?” Perhaps it just had to do with something like the statues. Not irrelevant, necessarily, but entirely possibly a dead end.
According to Ravanelli, the notation used means books.” Mista’s voice indicates he knows how unusual that is.
No one would have any reason to use a notorious smuggler to transport a mere set of books. Something important must be contained within. “Well done, Mista. I presume you have sent the address.”
Thanks, Boss.” He’s always so genuine in his thanks, as if he doesn’t expect it—which is ridiculous, given that he had previously worked under Bucciarati. “You know me. Once we finished with the warehouse, we headed out to the delivery address in Quebec. We should be there soon.”
As always, take care,” Giorno states—an order, not mere empty words.
Hey, Boss, you know me. I always do!” Mista protests, rather than taking the hint.
I do. Enough to remember each time you have been bleeding out, forcing me to use Gold Experience. I would appreciate if you would remember as well,” Giorno reminds him.
I...right, okay, point taken,” Mista responds. Giorno has hope, but he also is not good enough at lying to himself to expect it will last for long. The best he can hope for is that it will last longer than usual.
