See You Time Cowboy

Summary: This is another ancient work along the same lines as initiative meetings, Time After, and Torchwood: Aftershock.  It's been sitting in a document probably just as long as those, though I copied and pasted it into my prompt document a while ago.

Capt. Xan, as thrown into another dimension & returning as the Captain we all know and love

Everything was normal, at least, normal for the Hellmouth. That should have been Xander's cue that something was going to go horribly wrong. But, as usual, he ignored the signs, and as usual, that came back to bite him.

That was the night everything chan—no, hang on, let's just go back a bit.

Xander finished up with his lastest job and grabbed something quick to eat before heading over to Giles' apartment to deal with the latest crisis, evil soldier dudes. Turned out those were human, so they weren't really a problem that could be fixed by typical Buffy action. Then they got put on patrol duty, because the girls were busy dealing with their own problems. For once, Xander's mom was acknowledging his existence, even making something for the two of them. A pretty good day, all considering.

Then his dad showed up, and he tried to get Giles to leave, but the librarian didn't seem to understand the importance of getting out of there. And then he ran off, because he recognized that look in his father's eye, and he couldn't deal with that happening with Giles, of all people, in the house. And then he turned the corner, and a demon was waiting for him. At least, he thought it was a demon. Hoods, and black wrapping falling down. Demon, or demons, because others of the same kind shimmered in and out of existence, like ghosts, behind that one.

He managed a (hopefully menacing) smile. "You know, you don't really want to make me mad. You wouldn't like me when I'm mad."

The thing drew back, and for a moment he allowed himself to breathe easily. He'd managed to intimidate it, despite not actually having anything to back his statement up. Go Team Xander!

But then it moved, and he realized it was just pulling back to throw something at him. He tried to run, but his legs wouldn't move, like a nightmare, and then he heard the crackle of breaking glass and saw something seep out of the vial at his feet, flash like a...flashy thing, and then suddenly purplish flames were licking up his body, somewhat transparent but given the absolute agony he was in, they were real.

And then he couldn't see, or feel, anything at all.

And our story begins.

 

Xander felt the urge to scream when he came to, but instead just swayed a little.

And then noticed the marble. Why that was important, he wasn't entirely sure, but it didn't look familiar. Had he been kidnapped? Were there demons elsewhere in what was undoubtedly a crypt, preparing to sacrifice him as he just stood here thinking?

"Are you all right, Xan?" a gorgeous girl asked, walking by in a normal-ish, non robey uniform.

The way his lips twisted wasn't him. Really. "Now that I've seen you today, yeah. Your beauty just tends to knock me off my feet every time. Trust me, the memory of you doesn't do you justice."

She winked. "Oh, I know I get you off your feet." And then she walked away.

What was wiggy was that she was really pretty cute. And she was flirting with him.

Had Amy cast that spell again? Though if she really wanted him, he couldn't see why that would make sense...

And he was actually wearing that uniform too. What was going on here?

 

It got weirder when he saw Spike, wearing a uniform like him, and moving toward him with an urgency he couldn't particularly remember. "Xan."

"Hey,"

Xander gasped a little as he was suddenly shoved, desperately, against the wall around the corner. "What are you?"

doesn't want to talk, finally "You wouldn't believe me if I told you"

"I 'appen to work for the Time Agency. I think i might." past or alternate dimension John wants to help. If the T.A. knows that something's off they'll try to get the truth out of Xander.

"What, are you afraid the big bad man is gonna take away your manliness?"

"...Given the kind of women I tend to hang around, it sounds rather silly when you say it out loud." Xander says something he shouldn't have known and then John tests him by asking what they do here.

"Prevent others from changing time...and do it ourselves? Isn't that a little bit hypocritical?"

"...This version of you's more cynical, huh? Still, don't let them hear you say that."

Also adapts pretty well, even to the flirting. Gets him through the next mish, and Xander's horny and thankful and can't help himself. They talk, actually talk, afterwards. More than he's gotten to talk to Willow. Learns to be John's partner, then Capt. Xan shows up. Threatens them, and Xander thinks it's him.

Somewhere during it, Xander gets shot in the head.

He wakes and is told by Elder!Xan that E!Xan just touched him and there was this spark, and then later Xander woke up, so he's probably immortal too. "If you didn't know that would work, why did you kill me?" Turns out John did.

"I don't believe you."

"You got immortality; would've thought you'd have gotten memories too."

"Hate to disappoint you, but you're not a Vulcan, Mr. Spock, so-" then the memories hit.

"Oh, Chuck."

E!Xan has since learned how to send Xander back. & it is probable that Xander accidentally taking over Xan's body messed with Xan's memories and explains why the Time Agency is after them. They kiss, Xander says "Beam me down, Scotty" and "See ya, Space Cowboy." And then he's back.

Only a few days for them, a few years for him but it doesn't show. Anya can smell the sex on him and breaks up with him (and tries to kill him). He explains that he's changed, and Anya's mainly mad about the fact that he didn't let her watch. & it's not just the disappearance; she wants a normal life and that's one of the last things he'd like. They end up friends.
