When it comes to stepping off the plane bobbing gently in the water, she accidentally misses the dock, scaring away a fish she hadn’t seen below the water. “That’s a pirahna,” Giorno tells her quietly, hand on her shoulder, composure back.
They’re a lot bigger than she’d expected, though she hadn’t gotten too good of a look. “...Don’t those eat humans?” Admittedly she’s mostly only seen them in goofy movies that Xander insisted she needed to see, which might not be the most accurate when it comes to depicting reality.
He steps off, poise seemingly effortless, but while he’d fit in well in the city, something about being surrounded by so much life seems to be re-energizing him. It’s not just him, now that she’s paying attention, and it’s not just the amount of oxygen in the air from all the trees. Her hamon feels like it’s recharged, too. “Actually, they mostly only eat dead meat, unless they feel threatened. Vegetarian pirahnas even exist. According to Mista, that means they would probably taste better, if you wanted to eat one.” Okay, at this point, he’s just a biology nerd. Then he grins, and it’s not a particularly nice grin. “Of course, if we wished to be technical about this, that doesn’t exactly mean that pirahnas would be useless when it comes to disposing of bodies. You’d just have to ensure the person was a corpse before feeding them.” Right. A biology nerd that happens to be a mob boss.
Daniela, the Slayer they’re meeting, snorts, putting away the fishing pole. “Actually, I know that for a fact—we occasionally use them on dead demons, and they’ll nibble on vampires unlucky enough to end up in the water for some reason.” Her vicious smile suggests she might actually know something about how they ended up in the water. “I’m impressed. You’ve done your homework.”
Giorno shakes his head, tearing his eyes from the rainforest behind to actually look at her in the interests of being polite and making further connections. He hasn’t even looked at the tiny house behind the dock—a lot like the one they’d just investigated, actually, stilts and all. “I wouldn’t describe it in that way; I merely enjoy life in all its facets. Though I am also not unprepared.” He doesn’t flinch at the typical Slayer handshake, despite the fact that he’s obviously not as strong as some of his cousins and other associated relatives. Apparently it was some kind of test that he passed, because Daniela is happy enough to stop watching him carefully and meet Buffy with another handshake.
“We’ll take a brief break here to eat. We have a few small outposts like this.” She gestures at the house. “It’ll be very different from Salvador cuisine, of course, but you can’t get any fresher. Neither of you have a problem with seafood, correct?”
“California kid here.” Not that she’s been to California in years, but she’s definitely one for the beach and fresh seafood.
Giorno smiles and shrugs. “Napoli is also close to the ocean, and I enjoy fish, yes.”
“Well, you’re in luck. I managed to catch a few payara while waiting for you to arrive, and it won’t take long to prepare.” And there’s another vicious smile. “I suppose in some respects we might be vampire slayers in more than one sense; payara are also known as vampire fish. We’ve also gathered fried plaintains, brazil nuts, passion fruit, and cupuaçu juice, though the others are off on another hunt. It’s good to be refreshed and ready before we venture into the rainforest, though if necessary I and Ivete can catch us more fish or collect more fruit. When we feel ready, we’ll venture off in these boats.” She nudges one gently with a foot. “Ivete, you haven’t forgotten how to navigate yet, have you?”
“Don’t be ridiculous.” Ivete acts mock-wounded, clutching at her chest, and Antonio chuckles, ducking back into the plane to unload more supplies—looks like this was also partially a restocking mission probably organized somewhere in the new collaboration between the Speedwagon Foundation and the International Slayers’ and Watchers’ Council (that Buffy really hasn’t gotten in the way of because she has no clue how logistics work), because even if first aid stuff would be useful, there’s no way all of this is going to be fitting in those tiny boats.
Ivete takes a few of the fish Daniela hands her, taking them down the dock, and...honestly, if vampires were pretty much all a foot or less tall, they’d be so much easier to deal with. Not to find, but even then, they’d do so much less damage, too. Giorno goes to take a few himself without so much of a complaint, listening calmly and respectfully as Daniela continues. “We have also kept watch. I would never suggest that a visit to our beautiful state or the Amazon would be a waste of time, but I’m also not certain you’ll find what you’re looking for. From what we’ve seen from a distance, the structure looks abandoned. I understand needing to be thorough though.”
“The harder to get to, the better it’d be for a secret base,” Buffy points out, only cringing a little at the feel of actual fish in her hands. As ugh as weird demon juices are on your best clothes, they also help you get used to the feeling of gross stuff.

At some point, maybe when they’re not in the middle of trying to track down an ancient demon, Buffy is going to have to ask why everyone in the Joestar family has a thing about planes. Giorno had hid it well, but the moment they actually prep for the landing he goes a little stiff. It’s all subtle things he can pretty easily hide, but she’s spent longer around him recently, to be able to catch that kind of thing. Same with Jotaro. Josuke had been more distant, like he hadn’t experienced anything firsthand. Even Josephine had been worried, and not just about Xander, though she’d spent most of it taking it out by bugging Giles. Like they’re all prepping for a crash landing, just in case. It could be a phobia, but they don’t seem overly afraid, just...watchful and wary like plane crashes are more common than they are.
