Chapter Summary: Giorno takes one final step before they leave. Word Count: 1127
Rating: Teen
Note: HERE THERE PROBABLY BE BUFFY/JJBA SPOILERS
Because the second they actually stop the car and go inside the house, Giorno just stands up and strolls over like he’s just on a walk. Like this is a normal day. And then, using the same thief’s skills, is in the car and rifling through the glove compartment in no time at all, then apparently some papers on the seat. Still with the gloves on. Buffy’s just kind of frozen watching, finally glancing over to see Anitta looks vaguely impressed and Ludmilla’s definitely more than a little worried, but fortunately none of them call out in surprise, because they’d probably hear that in the house and come to see what was going on.
Buffy would have left it after Ludmilla had declared they were the same people that usually come to take care of the house, but it also seems that Giorno happens to be a very thorough man who likes to be sure about things. Probably comes in handy in his profession if she thinks about it.
He’s still wearing the gloves, thankfully. When he’s done, he closes up everything meticulously, no sign of hurry or stress in his movements, and then just as casually gestures for them to go back the way they came.
Honestly, it’s a good plan and she’s surprised she hadn’t thought of it before. She really is getting rusty. If it’s a private beach and they’re trespassing, that’s easier to explain from clueless tourists. If they walked back along the road the way they had come it’d be a lot more difficult to explain, and actually going through the vegetation would be a pain and take a while.
“I have a few names to look into. I’ll give you a list later. Rush would probably carefully not draw attention to himself by breaking laws, but I doubt his associates were as careful, which is probably part of why he decided they were liabilities. If the car is stolen, it’s much more likely that they’re associated with him. They’d also left some paperwork in the car, I assume because who would think thieves would lurk around a non-tourist area of the city, with merely a single unoccupied house getting ready to be sold?” He smiles just slightly, clearly enjoying the irony. “The company should be investigated, as well as what employees’ names I could read in such a short amount of time.”
He says that, but Buffy will humiliate herself again by starting to sing in public without demonic influence if he doesn’t have photographic memory or something like it and, after all this, would bother to leave before he was sure.
“I don’t take orders from you,” Ludmilla counters quietly. He just stares at her quietly as she gets back into position to watch.
“I can do it.” Anitta looks extremely unimpressed, not that Ludmilla notices, since she’s back to staring fixedly at the house. “You have to stay here to watch, anyway. And you realize he’s an ally, so it’s not an order, it’s a request. Just because Rush eliminated some of his contacts doesn’t mean he got rid of all of them. In fact, it’d make more sense if he didn’t, just the ones associated with his Wolfram & Hart identities, so making sure they’re not connected in any way is a good idea.”
“Whatever.” Ludmilla grumbles and looks away. She’s barely visible from her chair, but she looks comfortable and capable of keeping up the watch and she’s interested in that, at least. It’s possible she thinks this whole thing is a waste of time, but Buffy gets the feeling it’s more that ‘small town cop when the FBI rolls into town’ attitude she’d been expecting more from the rest of the Slayers. Buffy herself might get the slight mitigation of being a Slayer, too, so part of a global sisterhood, but Giorno definitely doesn’t have that. (And honestly the whole mob boss thing might be working in his disfavor, now. For her, anyway. It’s not like Buffy can claim it doesn’t bother her at all or be completely objective here, only that it’s useful.)
Anitta shrugs and they start heading back along the beach. The further they are away if they’re spotted, the better, but they obviously can’t be seen running away, either. Giorno looks entirely unruffled despite the wind blowing through his hair. The only thing that even slightly stands out is the suit, and the way he’s acting so casual and relaxed makes even that seem more like an eccentricity than a sign he obviously doesn’t belong on the beach with the rest of the tourists. Not that they’ve seen any yet, but if they walk along the beach long enough in any direction, they’re bound to find some.
Maybe part of how he can act like this is everyday is...well. For him, it might be. The Daily Life of Your Friendly Neighborhood Gangster. She hadn’t been able to pull that off in the house, but here it’s a different story; it’d been so long since she’d gotten to travel and the easy nostalgia of the beach work together to just let her relax like this is actually a vacation and not work. So following his example and just walking along the beach is easy.
“I don’t expect to find anything, but I’d rather know than guess,” he explains quietly, fond glance at them both probably part of the act. They’re not close enough to be passing off a relationship, but three friends, sure.
“I figured.” It’s not even just that Buffy’s gotten better at reading him since they started working together, although that is a factor. Mostly, it’s just that it’s what she’d do—not every time, obviously, she was a teenager for most of her in-the-field career so deserves some slack to be cut, but the times she was on top of her game absolutely. His glance this time is amused.
“We can look into that while you go on to the second site. Willow and Chico had a plan so you can keep in touch and not be entirely cut off when you get there, unless he’s specifically employed magical protections too.” They’re finally within sight of others on the beach again, so Anitta breaks off the work talk again and just starts in on the tour guide descriptions all the way back to Local Slayer HQ.

Maybe it makes her a bad sister holding the shoplifting against Dawn for so long after the fact (at least, as far as she knows, though it’s equally possible she’d just gotten better at not getting caught), but Buffy’s first thought is that she really, really needs to make sure Dawn doesn’t act on the Giorno-crush, because he’d be a really, really bad influence.
Because the second they actually stop the car and go inside the house, Giorno just stands up and strolls over like he’s just on a walk. Like this is a normal day.
